Prelude Welcome and Announcements Please Stand Opening Hymn Oh Come, All Ye Faithful ~ LBW 45, vs 1, 2 & 3 Oh, come, all ye faithful, Joyful and triumphant! Oh, come ye, oh, come ye to Bethlehem; Come and behold him born the king of angels: The highest, most holy, Light of light eternal, Born of a virgin, a mortal he comes; Son of the Father now in flesh appearing! : Oh, come, let us adore him, Oh, come, let us adore him, Oh, come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord! Sing, choirs of angels, Sing in exultation, Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above! Glory to God in the highest: Words Of Confession And Forgiveness P: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: As we await the fullness of Christ's coming, let us acknowledge our sins and failures before God. Silence for reflection and self-examination. P: Our indifference toward your coming, C: we confess to you, Lord. P: Our desire to control time and seasons, C: we confess to you, Lord. P: Our failure to be alert to signs of your presence in our midst,

C: we confess to you, Lord. P: Our lack of concern for those who come after us, C: we confess to you, Lord. P: Our lack of compassion for people you came to save, C: we confess to you, Lord. P: In the mercy of almighty God, I declare to you the forgiveness of your sins, and the grace to know joy in the Savior's coming. C: Amen. The Greeting P: From the one who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty: grace, light, and peace be with you all. C: And also with you. Kyrie ~ P. 78 LBW ~ Sung A: In peace, let us pray to the Lord. C: Lord, have mercy. A: For the peace from above, and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord. C: Lord, have mercy. A: For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord. C: Lord, have mercy. Prayer Of The Day P: Let us pray: Stir up our hearts, O Lord, to make ready the way of your only-begotten Son, that by his coming we may be enabled to serve you with pure minds; through your Son, Jesus Christ,

our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. Please Sit Lighting of the Advent Wreath P: Shepherds heard the message of the angel. They rejoiced at the good news that a Savior was born, and they were the first to tell others the Good News of Jesus. Like the shepherds, we are called to be witnesses to Christ. We pray that God would give us the boldness to speak. In joy we light the third candle on the Advent wreath. We read in Luke, Chapter 2: The shepherds went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. (Luke 2:16-17) Light three candles. Oh Come, Oh Come, Emmanuel ~ LBW 34, verse 3 Oh, come, strong Branch of Jesse, free your own from Satan s tyranny; From depths of hell your people save and give them vict ry o er the grave. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to you, O Israel. Service of Baptism Reception of New Members Annette Erskine Becky Chambers Bob and Launa Tardiff Derrick and Amy Mabry and daughter Emily

First Reading: Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11 1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; 2 to proclaim the year of the Lord s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; 3 to grant to those who mourn in Zion to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified. 4 They shall build up the ancient ruins; they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations. 8 For I the Lord love justice; I hate robbery and wrong; I will faithfully give them their recompense, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them. 9 Their offspring shall be known among the nations, and their descendants in the midst of the peoples; all who see them shall acknowledge them, that they are an offspring the Lord has blessed. 10 I will greatly rejoice in the Lord; my soul shall exult in my God, for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation; he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. 11 For as the earth brings forth its sprouts, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to sprout up, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to sprout up before all the nations. R: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Psalm 126 1 When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, then were we like those who dream. 2 Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy. 3 Then they said among the nations, The Lord has done great things for them. 4 The Lord has done great things for us, and we are glad indeed. 5 Restore our fortunes, O Lord, like the watercourses of the Negev. 6 Those who sowed with tears will reap with songs of joy. 7 Those who go out weeping, carrying the seed, will come again with joy, shouldering their sheaves.

Second Reading: I Thessalonians 5:16-24 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise prophecies, 21 but test everything; hold fast what is good. 22 Abstain from every form of evil. 23 Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it. R: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Children s Song Away In a Manger ~ LBW 67, verse 1 Away in a manger, no crib for his bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head; The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay; The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay. Please Stand Children s Sermon Gospel Verse ~ P. 83 LBW Alleluia. Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia. Gospel: John 1:6-8, 19-28 The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the First Chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord. Please look up the Gospel reading in your Bible. After the reading: P: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ.

Announcements Advent We are now in the season in the church year of Advent. Advent is a time of waiting and expectant watching for the coming of the Messiah. We wait for the Christ child in the manger in Bethlehem, but also for the return of Christ in all of his glory on that last day. The tone of our worship should reflect the theological tension between wistful waiting and joyful anticipation. In the Church we are called to put aside that trappings of the world in the season before Christmas and wait patiently for the King of kings. New Members It is with great joy we welcome the following people into membership today: Annette Erskine Becky Chambers Bob and Launa Tardiff Derrick and Amy Mabry and daughter Emily Notice Children s Choir and Confirmation Class Children s Choir and the Confirmation Class will practice the Christmas skit at 9:30 a.m. in the sanctuary on December 24th. Come, bring your Bibles, be enlightened, and enjoy some wonderful Christian fellowship! Lutheran Church Women We will meet on December 20 at 1:00 for our December meeting. The date was incorrect in our newsletter calendar. Please join us at 1:00, December 20, for our monthly Bible Study. Financial Update for 2017 As we approached end of 2017 we want to keep the congregation updated on our church finances. As of the end of November our expenses for the year are about $11,000 more than our income. We carried over a good bit of money from 2016 so our cash flow for the year has been fine, but as of the end of November we are in the red. Our intent each year is to finish the year in the black, with income equaling expenses. We have a good opportunity to make up this deficit in December. Please do consider your giving and let s end this year on a strong note. Thank you for your faithful giving all year long! One additional thought that we share periodically with the congregation. That is that the pledges that you make at the beginning of the year are not contracts, they are estimates of giving. We understand that people s financial situations

change during the year. Some years people financial situations change for the better, and we encourage you to exceed your pledge. Other years people s situations change for the worse and we understand if you give less than your pledge. You pledge is an estimate and we know that sometimes circumstances change during the year. And again, thank you for your giving this year. Let s finish 2017 on a strong note!
