Kingdom interest Very particular interest to Matthew 15 Parables start with kingdom of God is like... 5 NT teachings are under the kingdom theme A jewish kingdom on earth vs Jesus kingdom of God concept (secret/mystery) Present evil age (prince/ruler/god of this world) Age to come - messiah s national kingdom on earth Jews thought they were good to enter the evil age. John the Baptist said repent... be baptised... To be ready for the age to come In pride they rejected him Jesus affirmed John s teaching They rejected him also Jewish year builds up to Tabernacles in expectation of the coming messiah Matt 21:43- KOG will be taken away from you and given to people who produce fruit 7

Jewish interest How? 29 direct quotes & 121 indirect allusions from the Old Testament Particular emphasis on Jesus being the fulfilment of the Old Testament...that it might be fulfilled...which was spoken through the prophets... = 13 times Emphasis on Jesus came to fulfil the law NOT to destroy the Law Why? To keep the doors open for Jews Not forgetting the Jewish roots Not abandoning the OT Like Paul, Matthew longed for Jews to find the messiah 8

Gentile interest Genealogy lists Ruth and Rahab (gentiles) The wise men, (possibly gentiles) came to the Jesus Writes that Jesus ministered in Galilee of the gentiles Validates & honours the faith of the Roman centurion Writes that people from east & west come to sit in the kingdom Writes about the Canaanite women's faith Writes that the cornerstone rejected by Jews will be given to the gentiles Purpose = make disciples of all nations.. all ethnic groups includes gentiles 9

Church link Jesus instructions to the 12 Out of 37 verses 12 verses was relevant immediately & 25 verses were applicable to the church of the future facing gentile persecution Jesus refers to the universal Church When Peter confesses that Jesus is the Christ, son of the living God (Ch 16) Jesus refers to the local church When Jesus taught how to resolve conflict in church (Matt 18) 10
