Aoril 22-23, 2017 Ascension Acts 1:1-11; Matthew 28:16-20 Jesus gave us a special job: to show others how to follow him. Connect Time (15 minutes): Five minutes after the service begins, split kids into groups and begin their activity. Large Group (30 minutes): Begin 20 minutes after the service starts. Model what it looks like to be engaged in large group. Small Group (15 minutes): Keep kids in small groups until parents arrive. If you all have extra time at the end, you can review the video and songs together Kids need to feel heard. If they ask you something, even if it s not timed well, stop and respond positively. As kids leave, encourage them to tell their parents what people they drew in Small Group, and WHY! Today, we re reviewing the story of Jesus rescue and examining the special job Jesus gave us (the Great Commission). We re also talking about practical ways to do that job! Ahead of time, spend some time praying about Matthew 28:18-20.

GOAL: Connect Time is all about engaging kids in an activity that allows them to connect with each other right away while simultaneously piquing their curiosity for Large Group and preparing their minds for what they re going to hear. SPREAD THE WORD You can play this as a whole group or split into two groups. Everybody stands in a group. Give one kid a silly secret to share. Options are: She sells seashells Noisy Ned needs nuggets Roses are red; violets are blue Kids Club rocks! I want a hippopotamus for Christmas! Make up whatever you want That kid has to tell two people and then sit down. Those two people tell two people than sit down. Basically, once you have told the secret, you have to tell two more and sit down. See how long it takes to spread to everyone (How long it takes everyone to sit down.) Then have everyone share the secret out loud. Try again with a new secret. If you are in teams, you can race! TALK ABOUT IT Did the message pass quickly or slowly during connect time? What made it spread so quickly? Have you ever been responsible for giving someone a message? Before you go to Large Group, you can ask kids how their week went. You can also remind kids of the expectations for Large Group behavior: (1) be kind, (2) listen when somebody speaks, and (3) follow the leader s instructions.

Goal: Kids will (1) review the story of Jesus Rescue, (2) recognize that Jesus gave us a special job to tell others about him and (3) identify ways we can teach others about Jesus. Why? Making disciples is a command Jesus gave us, and that can include kids! No matter how young you are, you can show your friends how to follow Jesus. Tip: If small group went long, make sure you get to the activity. If it was shorter than usual, spend a longer time retelling the story (Question #1). REVIEW THE STORY 1. Tell me what happened after Jesus died on the cross and came back to life. (People found Jesus empty grave and were sad; Jesus appeared to the two women, then eventually to the rest of his followers.) 2. Before Jesus went back up to Heaven, he told us to do three special things. What are they? (#1 Go and make disciples, #2 Baptize people in Jesus name, #3 Teach/show them how to follow Jesus.) 3. What does it mean to get baptized? (Go underwater and come back up, and tell everyone out loud that you want to follow Jesus!) 4. How can we teach others to follow Jesus and obey him? (By following Jesus ourselves; showing them how.) 5. Why did Jesus give us this special job? (He wants everybody to know about him!) MAKE IT PERSONAL ASK: Does Jesus wants us to keep him a secret from other other people? (NO!) Does Jesus want us to show others how to follow him? (YES!) SAY: Then let s think of some people that we could show how to follow Jesus! Set out markers and lay out a large piece of tear off paper for your group. Tell kids to think of people that they could show Jesus to! They could be friends, neighbors, parents, brothers and sisters, teachers, classmates, grandparents and other family members.anyone! As soon as they think of someone, they should draw a picture of them on the big sheet of paper, and write the person s name next to it (If they can write.) They can draw as many people as they want. Remember, Jesus wants us to show EVERYONE how to follow him. (Continued on next page.)

As kids are drawing, discuss ways we can show/tell Jesus: Get baptized so everyone knows you follow Jesus Go home and tell somebody what you learned in Kids Club Be kind Invite a friend to come with you to Kids Club Help someone who needs it Watch Kids Club videos online with a friend Tell a friend who s sad that you ll pray for them, or pray WITH them! Tape up the large sheet of paper up on a wall for other kids to see! Extra time? Ask kids if they have any questions about Jesus Rescue. (Do your best to answer, but feel free to say you don t know.)

The goal today is to thoroughly review Jesus rescue, then dive deep into the Great Commission (which we re calling a special job Jesus gave us). WELCOME AND INTRO Main Goal: Review Connect Time and introduce the lesson. Notes: You can preview today s God s Story video here: God s Story /Jesus Rescue: https://vimeo.com/49018353 *Click to play intro music. Say: Hi everybody, welcome to Kids Club. It s great to see you here! You guys have been out there telling secrets to each other.can you tell me how your secret got around so quickly? (Let kids respond.) Say: That s right, you all helped to tell it! What about if the people who sat down just stopped telling others? What would happen? (Let kids respond.) Yep, some people wouldn t know the secret. And that wouldn t be very fun! Ask: I know something else that s just SO exciting and SO joyful, that we should want everyone to know about it. Anybody know what it is? (Let kids guess.) It s Jesus rescue! And it s something that EVERYONE should know! (Image: Cross) Remember, the wrong things we do sins separate us from God. But Jesus came and died for us, so that we could be close to God again. Then he came back to life, which means he s stronger than death. Everybody show me your best strong pose! (Let kids respond.) Say: Because of that, we ll never be separated from him again. He ll ALWAYS be close to us! Let s watch a video to see what happened next, AFTER Jesus came back to life. Video: God s Story / Jesus Rescue

JESUS COMES BACK TO LIFE Main Goal: Jesus appears to many people and they believe that he has risen from the dead. THE GREAT COMMISSION Main Goal: When Jesus returned he gave us an important job. MAKING DISCIPLES Main Goal: Describe what it means to be a disciple. Explain that Jesus still has disciples today.us!!! Ask: Wow, so what are some things Jesus did when he came back to life? (Let kids respond) (Image: Mary) Yep, he appeared to Mary. (Image: Jesus and others.) Then he appeared to two men on the road, his friends, and more than 500 people. (Image: Jesus) Then he went up to Heaven! Ask: Why was everybody so surprised to see Jesus? (Let kids respond) Yep, he had been dead. Nobody expected him to come back to life. But he did, because he was STRONGER than death! Say: And guess what else? One day, Jesus will come back and God will recreate a perfect world with no wrong things and his whole family will live in it with him forever! Say: Remember how we told secrets in Connect Time? Well Jesus doesn t want his rescue to be a secret. He wants EVERYONE to know about it, so that everyone can choose to be part of his family. Say: In the Bible, before Jesus went back to Heaven, he gave everyone who follows him a special job. Let s take a look at how the Bible describes that special job sometimes called The Great Commision. Can you say, The Great Commision! (Let kids respond.) Great job! Slide: Matthew 28:19-20 Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Say: So first, Jesus said to go and make disciples. Does anybody know what a disciple is? (Let kids respond) That s right, somebody who follows Jesus. So Jesus is saying, Go and show people how to follow me! Ask: Do you think that Jesus still has disciples today? (Let kids respond) Yes! Anyone who follows Jesus is his disciple, so that means me and YOU! Everyone point to someone else and say, You re a disciple! (Let kids respond.) Good job! Say: Let s watch a video and see Shrimpola and Music Mae try to explain how we can be disciples! Video: Ask Shrimpola / The Great Commision

TEACHING PEOPLE TO OBEY JESUS Main Goal: To follow Jesus is to obey him. FOLLOWING, OR NOT FOLLOWING JESUS? Main Goal: Identify ways to show people that you follow Jesus. Say: OK, so once people want to follow Jesus, he tells us to teach people to obey him. I need everybody to stand up. If Jesus told us to teach people how to follow and obey him, we re going to need to know how to teach something, right? So I m going to teach you something. I think it would be fun for you to learn some dance moves! (Stand perfectly still as you describe dance moves. You can make up your own or use these) Step to the right; swing your arms to the right as you step. Now go left while swinging your arms to the left. To the right again. To the left again. Say: Was that a little confusing? (Let kids respond.) Maybe I show you? Follow along with me! (Do the dance moves this time, as the kids follow. Speak as necessary but make sure to show everything you tell them.) That was so much better! Thanks, guys. You can have a seat. Ask: Was it easier the first time or the second? (Let kids respond) Yeah, it was WAY easier the 2nd time, right? And you know what? Teaching dance moves is a lot like showing somebody how to follow Jesus. Say: It s a whole lot easier when you SHOW them how to do it, by following Jesus yourself! So let s practice. Give me a thumbs up if I say a way to show others how to follow Jesus and a thumbs down if I say something that s either not following Jesus or not showing anybody else how to follow him. Ready? Believing in Jesus Rescue, but keeping it a secret (down) Getting baptized so everyone knows you follow Jesus (up) Going home and telling somebody what you learned in Kids Club (up) Saying mean things to your brother or sister (down) Letting a friend choose what to play (up) Worrying that God won t take care of you (down) Inviting a friend to come with you to Kids Club (up) Telling a friend who s sad that you ll pray for them, or even pray WITH them right there! (up) Say: See? It s like the dance moves you can SHOW people by the things you do!

BAPTISM Main Goal: Understand what it means to be baptized. RESPONSE TIME AND WORSHIP Main Goal: Give kids a chance to actively respond to what they heard, and listen to what God is telling them. Close the lesson with prayer and worship. Say: Jesus also told his disciples to baptize people and teach them to obey him. Does anybody know what baptism is? (Let kids respond). (Image: Baptism) Yep, it s when somebody goes into the water and comes back out. Kind of like how Jesus was buried and came back to life. It shows that a person wants to be like Jesus by following him. Baptism is like a BIG announcement. It s like somebody saying, I follow Jesus! Ask: Now, why did Jesus tell us to show people how to follow him and then baptize them? (Let kids respond) Say: Well, baptism is a lot like telling a secret. When a person is baptized, we know they follow Jesus. So if somebody decides to follow Jesus, they should let everybody know by getting baptized! Say: Right now, let s all close our eyes, and picture one person that we could show how to follow Jesus. A friend at school, someone in our family.someone who doesn t know Jesus. (Pause.) Got it? Okay, let s pray together right now, and ask Jesus to help us love that person, and show them how they can follow Jesus, just like us! Pray: Lord, you ve given us a really important job. We get to show and tell others who you are, and how much you love them, and how you rescued every one of us! Help us to reach our friends, and to be brave when we feel like we can t do it! Say: Let s worship together and thank Jesus for his rescue! Music Video: Grow Up Like Jesus Music Video: All Our Hope Dismiss kids to small groups.
