Return of Wallowa Lake land to Nez Perce As summer comes to a close and we look forward to a beautiful fall, come with me as I look back and share a story about camping that involves us all. In 1923, predecessors of the Oregon-Idaho Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church purchased 100 acres of land for what is now known as Wallowa Lake Camp located near Joseph, Oregon. Parcels of the property have been sold off over the years and the camp now stands at about 60 acres in size. Left behind in the land sales was 1.5 acres of Wallowa River property, surrounded by vacation homes and bordering the Wallowa Lake State Park. This land was part of the historic homeland of the Nez Perce people, taken from them in treaty violation. According to Camping and Retreat Ministries Executive Director Todd Bartlett, the sacred act of returning this small parcel to the tribe was encouraged by the work done at the 2012 General Conference and is also in line with two previous actions of the Oregon-Idaho annual conference, in 1986 and 2007, when we returned land to the Klamath tribes. At the Annual Conference held in Boise in June of this year, a successful vote was held authorizing return of this 1.5 acres to the Nez Perce. During a moving ceremony before the 400+ members assembled, a rock from the camp site was symbolically passed to representatives from the tribe. Gifts of gratitude and music were shared and stories told. Both laughter and tears filled the room at times and for me, these two hours were among the most meaningful of Conference. More information and photos of the ceremony held on-site in August are available at https:// www.umoi.org/ newsdetail/wallowa-lake-ceremony-honors-rightful-return-of-land-to-nezperce-11627405. A link to a short video which features the camp director explaining the potential importance of this parcel to future tribal fisheries can be found at the bottom of that page along with a second link to photos of the site and ceremony. Thanks for supporting me as Spirit of Grace s member of the 2018 Annual Conference. It was a joy and an honor. Watch this newsletter in the coming months for more information from Annual Conference including resources for Spiritual Formation, the role of generosity and gratitude in the life of every congregation, an update on legislative issues, and information from Pastor David regarding a Special Session of the General Conference of the UMC to be held in St. Louis, Missouri, in February of 2019.
