Biblical Development #1 Changing into the Image of Christ Romans 8:28-29 Today we are beginning a new series I have titled Biblical Development. It is my desire for God to use this series of messages to reaffirm that God is in the business of changing lives! 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. John 1:12-13 says, But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. I pray that we as Christians never lose our conviction that God does indeed change lives. In fact, Ephesians 3:20-21 tells us that our God enables us to make the radical changes necessary for fulfilling our purposes and responsibilities, Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Like the caterpillar that eats and sleeps its way into change, the process occurs gradually, but nonetheless powerfully. Many people who will rock this world are sleeping in the cocoon of obscurity, waiting for their change to come. That is why we have been told in Romans 13:11,...it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed." Long before this change involved you or me, God began with the spoken Word of creation. And out of that creative act God created a man from the dust of the ground. And from that man He brought forth a woman. And from that creative act God instituted marriage. And from the foundation of marriage He instituted a family, and from the family He instituted a society, etc. God never had to reach into the ground again because the power to accomplish was intrinsically placed into man; all types of potential were locked into our spirits before birth. For the Christian, change at its highest potential is the outworking of the internal. God placed certain things in us that must come out. We house the prophetic power of God. Every word of our personal prophetic destiny is inside us, and He has ordained us to be conformed to the image of Jesus Christ! In fact, He says in Jeremiah 29:11, For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. And, then, we have this New Testament promise in Philippians 1:6, And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns. 1

It is only when we are weary from trying to unlock our own resources do we come to the Lord, receive Him, and allow Him to release in us the power to become whatever we need to be. Actually, isn't that what we want to know - our purpose? Then we can use our God-given power to become who we really are. Life has chiseled far mtoo many of us into mere fragments of who we were meant to be. To all who receive Him, Christ gives the power to slip out of whom they were forced into being so they can be transformed into the individual they each were created to be. Salvation as it relates to destiny is the God-given power to become what God has eternally decreed you were before. "Before what?" you ask. Before the foundation of the world. What Christians so often refer to as grace is simply God's divine enablement to accomplish His purpose for our lives. What did the Lord mean when He said to Paul in 2 Corinthians 12:9, "My grace is all you need..."? He was simply saying that His power is not intimidated by our circumstances. The Bible teaches that we are empowered by God to reach and accomplish goals that transcend our human limitations! It is important that each and every born again believer realize that they are able to accomplish what others cann t accomplish simply because God has given us the grace to do so. Problems are not really problems to a person who has the grace to overcome. There have been many times when someone has said, "I don't see how you can stand before people and preach or I don t know how you can deal with all that you do. The answer is simple - if God has given us the grace to operate in certain situations, those things do not affect us as they would someone else who does not have the grace to function in that area. Therefore, it is important that we do not imitate other people. Assuming that we may be equally talented, we still may not be equally graced. Remember, God always empowers whomever He uses. That is exactly what we have been told in Philippians 2:12-13, Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure. Romans 8:29 tells us that we have been predestined to be conformed to the image of (Christ) which involves change. And I must confess that through my years of ministry I am convinced that most, if not all, Christians really do want to become more like Christ. But there seems to be a problem. According to a Gallup poll, nine out of ten Americans say they pray daily, and 84 million Americans almost a third of the population say they have made a personal commitment to Christ as their Savior. But the problem is that we do not see very much of a change in their life. And because of their lack of spiritual growth, their life-style, their attitudes, their commitment to church and/or ministry, their unforgiving spirit reveal that there is very little difference between so- 2

called believers and those who make no claims to Christ! But, how does one become conformed to the image of Christ in our present-day world? Jesus has given us the answer in Matthew 22:37-40, Jesus replied, You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: Love your neighbor as yourself. Jesus brought a message that spoke to the deepest longings of the human heart, and that is to make one s life count for something. And to make that longing become a reality, He focused on the center, the heart of spiritual life. When asked to identify what the law is about, Jesus response was simply Love God, love people. The apostle Paul had this to say about the Christian life in 1 Corinthians 13:1-2, If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. John put it this way in 1 John 4:7-8, Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. Once more, Jesus simply put the Christian life as Loving God and loving others. Therefore, as I have come to understand that great truth, I have come to realize that there are some people who have been saved for years, been faithful in their church attendance, faithful in the giving of their money to the cause of Christ, and even befriended the preacher, and yet, they have no idea what the Christian life is all about! In fact, some of the most cantankerous Christians that I know are veritable storehouses of Bible knowledge, but they have not applied it. They can give you facts and quotes, and they can argue doctrine. But they are angry, ugly people. The truth of the matter is this instead of becoming more like Christ, they have only become more selfrighteous, critical, and judgmental toward those people who do not agree with their little religious ideas. And I am convinced that one of the greatest hindrances to the cause of Christ is when Christians become exclusive, self-righteous, complacent, and judgmental. The Bible has a word for that group of religious folks Pharisees! But the Bible said in Romans 8:29 that we are predestined to be conformed to the image of (God s) Son (Christ) Ladies and gentlemen, we are only fulfilled when we accomplish what we were predestined to be! That is why we have been told in Philippians 2:13 for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure. This could very well be one of the greatest truths 3

in the entire bible after salvation. Child of God, you were predestined to be conformed to the image of Jesus Christ! That is, to act, to love, to speak, and to forgive in the same manner as He has taught us to do! How is that possible? It is He who works in (us) both to will and to do for His good pleasure. Child of God, you are without excuse! Ephesians 2:4-6 says, But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. Let me give you a biblical illustration of what I am trying to say. When the prodigal son was in the "hog pen," the Bible says in Luke 15:17, "And when he came to himself..." Remember, we are fulfilled only when we are led into being who we were predestined to be. Real success is when I come to myself and realize that my destiny is not down in some hog pen but with Christ in the heavenly places. Therefore, the thing that gives an individual power to rise above his circumstances is his coming to himself. You feel fulfilled when you achieve a sense of knowing that you are doing what God has called you to do, fulfilling the purpose for which you were born. However, the longer we wander along in the fog of uncertainty, the more weary we become, and when that happens we become an easy target for Satan s arrows of doubt and fear. And when fear comes in the front door of your life, faith goes out the back door and you are left in a state of uncertainty as you wrestle with discontentment. Sometimes peace can come only through change. And, as much as we really don t like it, change is a gift from God. It is given to the person who finds himself too far removed from what he feels destiny has ordained for him. There is nothing wrong with being wrong - but there is something wrong with not making the necessary adjustments to get things right! Even within the Christian community, some do not believe in God's ability to change the human heart. This unbelief in God's ability to change causes people to judge others on the basis of their past. Dead issues are periodically revived in the mouths of gossips. Still, the Lord progressively regenerates the mind of His children. Don't assume that real change occurs without struggle and prayer. However, change can be achieved. Let me ask you an interesting question - What is the purpose of the Bible? The answer is given for us in 2 Timothy 3:16-17, "All scripture is iven by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be thoroughly furnished unto every good work." 4

This is a passage of Scripture that people misread most of the time. The purpose of the Bible is not for doctrine, not for reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness. The Greek word translated that literally means in order that. The purpose of the Bible is in order that the man of God may be thoroughly furnished unto every good work. So doctrine in itself is not the purpose of the Bible. Reproof in itself is not the purpose correction or training is not the purpose. The bottom line is to change lives: "That the man of God may be thoroughly furnished unto every good work." Therefore, the purpose of the Bible is to change lives, and that is why we have been admonished in James 1:22, But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. Listen, the goal of the Bible is not to inform but to transform! God's purpose from the very beginning of time has been to make us like Jesus. In Genesis there was the fall - Jesus came to restore what was there before. So Romans 8:29 simply reminds us that the goal of all biblical truth is to produce Christ-likeness in an individual. And the word that he uses for change is the word conform. Jesus brought a message of change in Matthew 3:2 when He said, Repent ye; for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. The Bible teaches that changing the way I act is the fruit of repentance. Technically, repentance is not a behavioral change; it results in behavioral change. Repentance is what happens in your mind. Why would I make such a statement? Because all behavior is based on belief. That is why Paul says in Romans 12:2, Be transformed by the renewing of your mind. The Bible very clearly teaches that the way we think affects the way we feel, and the way we feel affects the way we act. Since change starts in the mind, God has given us this promise found in 1 Corinthians 2:16, But we have the mind of Christ. Let s go back once again to Romans 12:2 where we have been told, And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. The obstacles of past scars can be overcome by present truths. Your deliverance will not start in your circumstances; it will always evolve out of your mentality. Paul said in Ephesians 5:26 that Jesus cleanses by the "washing of water by the word." So, my advice is to get into the Word of God, and allow it to gently wash away every limitation as you become transformed into the refreshed and renewed person that God created you to be. 5

Whenever someone tells you what you can't do or be, or what you can't get or attain, then, simply tell them, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me! If you have never been saved, why not today? Everyone please stand for prayer. Father, Your Word is true. Thank You for giving an understanding that whatever I might be today is nothing compared to what I can be through Your wonderful grace and guidance. In Jesus name. Amen. 6
