December 17, 2017 Why Did Jesus Come? Pastor Charles Mendenhall Why did Jesus come, did He come to bring us a set of rules and regulations that we could never keep or did He come to bring a message of hope? The following scriptures will tell us why He came. 1 John 3:8 "He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil." KJV 1 John 3:8 "[But] he who commits sin [who practices evildoing] is of the devil [takes his character from the evil one], for the devil has sinned (violated the divine law) from the beginning. The reason the Son of God was made manifest (visible) was to undo (destroy, loosen, and dissolve) the works the devil [has done]." AMP Whatever has happened in our lives in relationship to the devil working against us, setting traps and snares for us, God sent His Son Jesus into the world to destroy the work the devil has done in our lives and allow us to go free, therefore we have the message of hope. John 10:10 "The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows)." AMP John 10:10 "The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." KJV This verse tells why the devil has come and in contrast why Jesus came. Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil, Jesus is greater than the force of darkness. Jesus is continually at work driving back the forces of darkness that are coming against us as we resist the devil. The devil comes only to steal, kill and destroy, but Jesus comes to give life and that more abundantly. 1 John 3:8 "He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil." KJV

Jesus came for this reason that He might destroy the works, the plans and schemes of the devil, that have been planned so cunningly against the believer to bring us down to nothing and destroy us. Jesus is greater than the adversary. John 1:1-4 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. *4 In him was *life; and the life was the **light of men." KJV This scripture is one that we should meditate on and become aware of the importance that is here, it tells us exactly what and who Jesus is and that because of Him we have life, because He is life and light. By faith and the renewing of our mind, we need to learn how to walk in the light of this word. All scripture is given by the inspiration of God and is good for us, but we must exercise faith to walk in the light of the word of God or it will not benefit us or profit us. *v. 4 note the importance of this verse, it would be good for us to memorize this verse, it will benefit us and give us the full knowledge of who He is and what He has done for us. ** light stands for the development of man 1 John 5:11-12 "And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He that hath the Son hath *life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life." KJV As we read this scripture over and over and meditate it, we are challenged to step up to a higher level in our relationship with Jesus than we presently have. He was the word, is the life and the life was the light of men. There are four different words in the New Testament that give a definition of what life means, these words are found in the Greek and are 1) a natural human life 2) a physical life 3) which is behavior, but the word used in this verse is *Zoe. Zoe is a God kind of life or eternal life or life as God has it. In doing a study of this kind of life, we find that it is the highest blessing that God can confer upon His people. John 3:15-17 "That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved." KJV

We have within us eternal life or everlasting life, God didn't come to condemn the world. In Jesus coming, He dealt with the shame and guilt, the inferiority feelings of not being worthy because of past circumstances, all the bad things that come to us in our life. He does not want us walking around carrying all those bad things, making us think that we are not worthy, we are redeemed with the blood of Jesus, we are seated in heavenly places, we have been set free. Jesus came to deal with all those negative things that rise up in our lives because of past experiences. We learn by faith the confession or words that come out of our mouths to begin to walk those principles out. The life was the light of man, light is the development of man. As we begin to move up to a higher level in our walk with the Lord, we will begin to realize that the God kind of life that is in us, is because Jesus is in us and we have the Holy Spirit. His light to develop us is also there, it means that our minds have the potential and possibility to be sharp, but it must be walked out by faith. Example was given of a young woman who was very immature and until she received Jesus as her Savior didn't act as other children did. After salvation, she begin to change, her appearance and her actions around other people. As she grew up, she met a young man, married him and stayed with his folks while he served in the armed forces. She learned how to read and write while he was gone, she began to save the money that he sent to her each month and when he came home she had enough for them to start a construction business, however, he died at an early age and she continued the work they had started, building up a profitable business. She had had an experience in her life, had received the God kind of light that Jesus provided for her. People who knew her saw the change in her, her mother had always brought her to church and she raised her children the same way. She had walked in the wisdom that she had received. The life of God in us brings the ability or development within us and regardless of where we are, there is a champion on the inside of us wanting to get out and show Himself strong on our behalf and bring us to a place of success and honor in our lives. This success is not developed through an entitlement mentality, Jesus is our source. We can't start at the top, we start where we are and then God starts working with us bringing us up where He wants us to be. God is for us, He is working for us through His Son Jesus who He sent into the world. Jesus always was, there is no

beginning or ending with Him. But God needed a vehicle to get into the earth and therefore, He sent His only begotten to the earth through the virgin Mary. He prepared her body for Him to come to earth to be manifested and bring the life and light of God to help all men be successful and break the curse of darkness because of the fall put on man. This is the reason that Jesus came. God gives us the ability and the knowledge. Heb 10:5 "Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:" KJV John 3:15-17 "That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved." KJV John 5:24-26 "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. 25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. 26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;" KJV As believers we have eternal life, zoe life or life like God. Religion teaches that Jesus is here to condemn, but that is not true, He was sent to bring salvation that we might be saved. When we accepted Jesus as our Savior, He came to dwell on the inside of us, that life that the Father gave to His Son Jesus is now living and dwelling on the inside of us. When we learn to develop that light on the inside of us as we walk through our journey here on earth, focused on heaven. Jesus never lost sight of where He was headed, His goal was heaven and when we understand that we are headed towards heaven, why would we set down and quit? What are we faced with that might cause us to set down and quit or what are we faced with that would encourage us to finish our race? Heb 12:1-3 "Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds." KJV The reason that Jesus came to earth, his whole purpose was to destroy the works of

the devil. Jesus is here today to help us overcome anything that would maybe cause us to set down, He is here to encourage us in our race in a successful winning manner. 1 John 3:8 "He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil." KJV Acts 10:38 "How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him." KJV God had a reason for sending Jesus, anointing Him with the Holy Ghost and with power, He went about doing good and healing all oppressed. This was His mission while here on earth. God is looking for those that He can show Himself to, whose hearts are believing toward Him. 2 Chron 16:9 "For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. Herein thou hast done foolishly: therefore from henceforth thou shalt have wars." Luke 4:18 "The Spirit of the Lord [is] upon Me, because He has anointed Me [the Anointed One, the Messiah] to preach the good news (the Gospel) to the poor; He has sent Me to announce release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to send forth as delivered those who are oppressed [who are downtrodden, bruised, crushed, and broken down by calamity]," AMP Acts 10:38 "How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him." KJV These scriptures give the full reason why Jesus was sent to the earth and to the believers, this is the same thing that He wants for us today. It is not His will that any should be oppressed by the devil, the devil is the one who is responsible for sickness and disease, but his power has been broken because of the anointing given to Jesus by God the Father. That same power has been given to the believer using the name of Jesus. Jesus is not that baby in the manger. Jesus was sent to release captives, bring recovery of sight to the blind, deliverance to the oppressed, not wanting anyone to be broken down by circumstances of any kind. Jesus even recognized when someone had been bound by the devil, spoke to her and she was released. God is not done blessing us, He went through alot of challenging times in order to put His Son Jesus here into the earth because He loved people and in order to redeem

them from the fall of man, Jesus had to come. Luke 13:16 "And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?" KJV This sickness came from the enemy, Jesus was manifested to destroy the works of the devil. God does not want us walking around in condemnation, when His blessings have been provided for us. This is why Jesus came, it does not matter when a healing takes place. He has come to deliver us from anything that might be plaguing the believers. We have been set free.
