Newsletter for Autumn 2016 The object of the Hampshire Buddhist Society is to make known the principles of Buddhism and to encourage the study and practice of those principles. Special Events On Thursday 1 st September and Thursday 20 th October the Theravada Group meeting will be led by a member of the Chithurst Sangha. On Saturday 1 st October we will plant a tree at Chithurst Buddhist Monastery to commemorate our 50 th anniversary. Further details are below. If you would like to come to any of our special events, please tell us. We share cars for events at remote locations so the cost is very reasonable. HBS Web Site Steve Mansell The Blog page contains short articles, some of which have previously appeared in the newsletter. Announcements of special meetings arranged at short notice will be here. The PDF version of this newsletter will also be available for download here. The new web site is now live at www.hampshirebuddhistsociety.org.uk. The About pages describe the Society and its two groups. The Calendar page has all of the meetings planned for this year along with instructions to link it to your own computer calendar if you use one. The Links page has links to the web sites of the various organisations that we are connected to along with short explanations of those relationships. Finally, the Contact page has various ways to get in touch with us and a map showing where we are. 1

50 th Anniversary Tree Planting Steve Mansell one of our founders, will be there. Roberta and Steve Mansell will talk about the history of the Society and a Sangha member will offer their own reflections. After the meal we will plant the tree and then have a cup of tea together. If you would like to offer dana, all you need to do is to bring a generous dish, enough for yourself and a monk. On Saturday 1 st October we will plant a tree at Chithurst Buddhist Monastery to commemorate our 50 th anniversary. When we gather with the Sangha for the midday meal. We hope that Jane Browne, If you need a lift to Chithurst, contact us and we will probably be able to hook you up with someone who can help. The tree and plaque will cost us almost 200 so any extra contributions to help with this expense will be very welcome. Chithurst Buddhist Monastery Events Pavarana Day, which marks the end of the Vassa retreat, will take place on Sunday 16 th October. The Kathina will take place on Sunday 30 th October. Details are available from the Chithurst web site, www.cittaviveka.org. 2

Buddha Metta Society Pilgrimage 2017 and experience following in the footsteps of Theravada Thai Forest Tradition monks. Their guide, Thai born Luangpoh Sudhiro, has led pilgrimages over the past 8 years to both Thailand and India. The next pilgrimage will take place in January. Further details are available from: Ken Garrod 07977-534606 kennethgarrod@yahoo.co.uk The Buddha Metta Society asked us to advertise their 2017 pilgrimage to Isaan, North East Thailand, to Live in the Dhamma Peter Foster 07599-755692 pefbear@yahoo.co.uk Additions to the Library Thursday s Lotus by Paul Trafford is a gift to the HBS library from Jane Browne, one of our founder members. It is a biography of Paul s mother, Fuengsin Trafford, who was a member of HBS in the late Sixties. She was born in Thailand in 1936, became a student of Ajahn Gaew and came to England in 1965. Early Buddhist Teachings is the latest publication from the Buddhist Publication Society. It seeks to understand early Buddhist teachings as a critical response to the binary opposition between two perennial world views, spiritual eternalism and materialist anihilationism. Uncommon Wisdom by Ajahn Dick Silaratano is a biography of Ajahn Pannavaddho. Ajahn Pannavaddho was for many years the most senior Western bhikkhu in the tradition of Ajahn Mun. His early translations of Ajahn Maha Boowa s teachings, e.g. The Funeral Desana, were first published by HBS. This book was recommended to us by Priyanga. 3
