Page 2 TRINITY & GILLYGOOLEY NEWS Issue 35 Jim Adams by Margaret Simms Although a familiar face to us all, Mr Adams has not always been a member of Trinity. In fact he came to Omagh as recently as 15 years ago, after his wife died. Before that, he lived near Gortin, in Eskeradooey/Lislap. He worked as a forester for 32 years, until he had to retire with heart trouble. He enjoyed that work. He was outdoors all the time. He is one of three brothers. One of his brothers died in 1982; his other brother lives in Lislap and is married with a son and a daughter. Our Mr Adams lives at Dergmoney with his son Rodney. He doesn't drive anymore. Rodney brings him to church mostly and neighbours are very good, he says. Getting transport means a lot to him, particularly since he had a hip replacement operation in 2004. Although he watches a good bit of television, Mr Adams gets out and about too. On Tuesdays, he goes to the Legion in Campsie, where there is chat and bingo and physical exercises. On Thursdays, you will find him at Gortmore Day Centre, where he meets friends and has lunch. In between, he might be visiting family. Friends take him to Gortin sometimes. Lowry Bros of Castlederg have won the contract to build the new Trinity Manse at Mullaghameena Avenue. Work started in June and should be completed early in 2007, allowing the Herron family to move in around Easter. The photos show some of the early works at the site. Mr Adams hopes to take part in the Trinity outing to Saintfield on 24th June. In July, he and others from D.C.F.( Disabled Christian Fellowship) will spend a week in Newcastle, Co Down. Hopefully we will be seeing him as we do on Sundays, marking Church Loyalty cards with his team, as they welcome us in the porch. WORK AT LAST BEGINS ON NEW MANSE

Issue 35 TRINITY & GILLYGOOLEY NEWS Page 3 Trinity Concert On Saturday evening, 25th March, Trinity Church Hall was packed for a concert in aid of Christian Aid. Compere for the evening was Wesley Atchison who kept everyone entertained between each act. The opening item on the programme was "Trinity on Tour", a lively musical group comprised of Drew Barbour, Joan Cummings, Sam Gallagher, Colin Jardine, Carol McCandless, Claire McElhinney, Joe McGrew, Roy Millar, John Moore, Greg Parke and Heather Watson. They played an assortment of instruments and sang "Daisy, Daisy" as well as a very lively rendition of "Lily the Pink." Next on stage were The Girls' Brigade (pictured left) led by Mavis Jardine. Emma Moore then recited the poem "Lorraine, Lorraine" in a clear and confident voice before Keith McKnight came on stage to give an extremely skilful performance on his electric guitar.

This was followed by a Trinity version of 'Mr and Mrs', hosted by Wesley Atchison and Sara-Jayne Mcclung, which was hotly contested by Robert & Hazel McCay, Sam & Betty Gallagher and Colin & Mavis Jardine. Claire McElhinney (left) was next to come on stage, playing the guitar to accompany her wonderful singing of "Hard Times" and "Amazing Grace". The showcase of talented Trinity performers continued with Joe McGrew singing "The Forty Shades of Green" and the popular "Alexander's Ragtime Band"

Page 6 TRINITY & GILLYGOOLEY NEWS Issue 35 Joe was followed by Heather Watson's strong performance of "The Gipsy Rover" and then Joan Cummings gave a lovely rendition of "Where the Roses Never Fail". Next on the programme was a hilarious sketch, "The Two Ms", ably acted out by John Moore and Roy Millar before "Trinity on Tour" returned to the stage to close the concert. Supper was then served to end a wonderful evening of entertainment. Many thanks to everyone who took part in the concert and to John Moore and his committee for organising the event which has raised over 800 for Christian Aid!

For those that don t know me I am Joan McCauley, married to Martin and the mother of three, Ashley (15) who is lucky enough to be setting off with the Ulster Project this year to Salt Lake City, Zara Jayne (13) and Samantha (11). We live at Claragh Road on the family farm. I have worked as a secretary within the hospital now for 18 years, the last 12 of these with Occupational Therapy. September 11 th is an important date for me and my family each GILLYGOOLEY NOTICE BOARD GILLYGOOLEY CHILDREN S SUMMER SCHEME The Summer Scheme organised by Gillygooley Youth & Community Development Association, commences on Monday 17th July 2006 in Gillygooley Orange Hall and runs for three ON MY BIKE FOR CHARITY year as it is my birthday. September 11 th 2006 however will be spent somewhat differently as I hope to set off on a special trip to Gdansk in Poland. Back in January this year I decided to sign up to participate in the Great 500 Cycle for Marie Curie Cancer Care. This involves 500 cyclists from UK taking part in one of five routes each of which finishes in Warsaw, the home of Marie Curie. The route I have signed up to complete will take place over 4 days and cover a total of 473km (280 miles). As we are all too aware, Cancer seems to be part of so many people s lives these days and it is somewhat comforting to know that Marie Curie provides such an essential service to Cancer patients and their families in their own homes when they need it most. I have for many years now been involved in charity work of various kinds. I normally raise money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer/Macmillan Nurses by weeks for Primary school children who have completed Year 2 to end of Year 7. From 7th 11th August a summer scheme will be held in the evening for Year 8 plus. Registration night is on Wednesday 14th June from 7.00 p.m. 8.00 p.m. For further details contact Andrew Scott on 82242895. selling handmade cards or selling Teatime Treats at work. I am a Sunday School teacher and former leader of Gillygooley Youth Club. I have been involved in the Guide movement also for a number of years being Leader in Charge at Drumquin Brownies and then moving on to 2 nd Omagh Brownies to be assistant leader. I enjoy lots of craft work, in particular card-making and cross stitching. Many people will also know me as their Avon representative. This is an excellent social activity and the only chance for me to see my neighbours other than a fleeting glance as we pass each other in our ever increasingly busy lives. I have been out on the bicycle quite a bit over the recent months and am hoping the weather will be favourable over the coming weeks and months so that my preparation will go well for September. On Saturday 3 rd June I hope to take part in the Causeway Trek for Northern Ireland Chest Heart and Stroke Association. This 11-12 mile walk will be good endurance training for me. FUNDING SUCCESS Gillygooley Youth & Community Development Association have received a grant of 4,125 from Omagh District Council to assist in the resurfacing of the Orange Hall car park. It is hoped work will be completed by the end of the summer. Those who may

Issue 35 recall the parking difficulties for the Church prior to the Orange Hall being built, will appreciate how essential the use of the hall car park is for Church services, especially weddings and funerals. GILLYGOOLEY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH ALTERATIONS Progress on the Church alterations has resumed with all outstanding Building Control issues having been addressed. Tenders were received from four contractors by the return date of 31 May. The committee is meeting on 12 June to select the contractor. Raymond Smyth (Secretary) GILLYGOOLEY WALKING CLUB Forty members have enrolled for the new Walking Club TRINITY & GILLYGOOLEY NEWS which has been jointly organised by Gillygooley Community Association and Gillygooley 2 nd Youth. The club meets every Wednesday evening at 7.30 p.m. commencing at Gillygooley Orange Hall. The walks are planned for mixed ability and a short and long walk is planned each evening. Iris Moffitt-Scott and Ellen Fyffe have completed The Walk Training Programme as Volunteer Walk Leaders. Additional members are always welcome even if you are only available on occasional nights. The members wish to extend their thanks to Maurice and Diane Stevenson who got sponsorship of fluorescent vests to improve safety on the walks. Page 10 TRINITY & GILLYGOOLEY NEWS Issue 35 POPULAR GILLYGOOLEY COUPLE CELEBRATE RUBY WEDDING ANNIVERSARY anniversary presents. This generous gesture has contributed 1,750 to the church s building fund. Malcolm's parents, Edna and Robert John, came to live at Aughaleague in 1936 where they had five of a family. They too were members of Gillygooley Presbyterian Church where Malcolm s father was ordained as an elder in 1953. Malcolm has a keen interest in clay pigeon shooting and was instrumental in the formation of Beechmount Clay Pigeon Club, which is based on his farm. He is a member of Clanabogan Bowling Club and is also interested in music, being a former member of Gillygooley Pipe Band. In addition to his farming duties, Malcolm enjoys engineering and can frequently be found in his workshop repairing machinery for neighbours and friends. Malcolm and Myrtle on their wedding day 40 years ago Malcolm and Myrtle McKinley were joined by family and friends to celebrate forty happy years of marriage at a party in Gillygooley Orange Hall. Following their marriage in Newtownstewart Presbyterian Church on 6 March 1966 by Rev. Johnston, they came to reside on the McKinley family farm at Aughaleague. The couple are faithful members of Gillygooley Presbyterian Church of which Malcolm is a long serving committee member. Their generous support to the church was once again recognised when at their request they invited donations to the Church in lieu of Myrtle (nee Donald) with her knowledge and interest in farming quickly adapted to rural life in Aughaleague, being very supportive to Malcolm building his farm enterprise. She has a great love of animals and would frequently be found in their midst on the farm. Her hobbies include gardening, bowling and she is a former leader of Gillygooley Youth Club. One of her must ardent pastimes is baking of which she shares her talents for the benefit of others throughout the community on many occasions. Malcolm and Myrtle have a family of four- David, Karen, Allister and Valerie. All are married and live in the Gillygooley area with the exception of Valerie who resides in Belfast. Malcolm and Myrtle are close to their family and derive great pleasure from their six grandchildren. David, Karen, Allister and their families continue the McKinley s long association with Gillygooley Presbyterian Church. When Myrtle was asked to comment on the success of her marriage, she was quick to respond and said the most important factors were, Give and take, tolerance and most importantly their Faith.

Page 12 TRINITY & GILLYGOOLEY NEWS Issue 35 G-Factor Young Enterprise Group, Scoop Best Youth Group and Best Junior Company at Awards Ceremony Yet again Gillygooley Youth Club have produced a very successful Young Enterprise Team, this year under the appellation of, G-Factor. Seventeen young people came together in September 2005 and although some of them are from Gillygooley, a number also travelled from Omagh. Lee Alexander was voted in as Managing Director, Jonathan Smyth as Finance Director and Lisa Hemphill as Company Secretary. The management team, joined by Peter Cowan, ICT Director and Karen Moore, Marketing Director represented G-Factor at the recent Sperrin and Lakeland Regional Awards. The Awards were a culmination of the year s work during which students set up their own business. Along with advisors from the business world, they had run this business by making and selling products locally. The young people produced several unique products and also built on the success of their peers in Gillygooley Youth Club. This large group showed great commitment to their Company and remained enthusiastic in all they did, whether it was the local Trade Fair or being part of a production line. This year G-Factor picked up the awards for Best Junior Company and Best Youth Group, and they now go forward to the Northern Ireland Final on June 9 in Belfast where they are guests at Belfast City Hall. Managing Director from G- Factor, Mr Lee Alexander said, We are all very proud of our achievement. As a youth club our resources were limited at times, but we worked well as a team and we were rewarded for it. All our hard work throughout the year has paid off. Business Advisers, Yvonne Armstrong, Lorraine Elkin, Louise Scott and Sandra Magee assisted the young people throughout the year. A special award was presented to Lorraine Elkin for long service to Young Enterprise. Anne, who has a florist s shop in Fintona, The Wild Bunch gave an interesting demonstration to a keen audience. She also provided and sponsored the flowers used throughout the evening. Rev Herron welcomed everyone and thanked Anne for her generous support. Following the demonstration, Andrew Scott auctioned the arrangements. With all the keen bidding, which ensued, arrangements were quickly sold. The evening ended with supper being served by ladies from the congregation. Page 14 TRINITY & GILLYGOOLEY NEWS Issue 35 FURTHER EXPANSION OF GILLYGOOLEY 2 ND YOUTH L-R Back, Joan and George Armstrong, Iris Moffitt-Scott Front, Robert and Mabel Armstrong and Jean Ellis Anne Turner and Jean McCay Membership has now approached fifty at Gillygooley 2 nd Youth and this relatively new group formed as part of the associations continued community programme is growing from strength to strength. In recent months their programme has been as diverse as to cover subjects from home safety to gardening. Out-of-centre activities have included swimming, walking, networking seminars, floral art and social interaction with other similar groups. The group has been successful in sourcing funding from various bodies, which has been used to subsidise tutors and travel. The group are also affiliated to the Senior Citizens Consortium Sperrin Lakeland. The success of the group has been attributed to its friendly and relaxed approach and the opportunity to make new friends and acquaintances and being supportive to each other. Membership is not limited to the perimeter of Gillygooley with members coming from Drumquin, Fintona and Omagh. The final event of the season is a trip to Exploris Aquarium in Portaferry on Saturday June 24. The coach leaves Gillygooley at 9.30, stopping at 2 nd Comber Presbyterian Church for lunch. The return journey is along the scenic North Down coast, with a stop at the Tidy Doffer in Lisburn for a meal. At time of going to print, only a few seats remain vacant. Page 16 TRINITY & GILLYGOOLEY NEWS Issue 35 CHURCH AUCTION BOOSTS CHURCH FUNDS A very successful auction in aid of Gillygooley Presbyterian Church repair fund raised over 5,100. The event, held in Gillygooley Orange Hall, was well supported by members of the congregation and others in search of bargains. The Hall was crammed with furniture, toys, kitchenware and gardening tools and thanks must go to everyone who contributed to the collection. The ladies of the Church were also on standby providing tea and sandwiches for those who had built up an appetite. The congregation is indebted to Bertie Pollock and Alan Porter, auctioneers who gave their services free of charge and ensured that the 600 lots on offer were quickly disposed of. The Hall was packed with people looking for bargains. Diane and Brian Mills, getting ready to bid at the auction held to raise money for the Church Building Fund. Page 18 TRINITY & GILLYGOOLEY NEWS Issue 35 GILLYGOOLEY YOUTH CLUB YEAR COMES TO AN END IN STYLE! Once again, another year has finished for Gillygooley Youth Club, much to the delight of the leaders! The end was marked by Parents Night, an evening where the children can indulge in singing and dancing, and showing off their many talents for family and friends. These performances would follow a prize giving to members for activities, games and competitions they had participated in throughout the youth-club year. Mrs Julie Wysner, principal of Gillygooley Primary School, was invited, with her husband, to present the awards to the young people. Prizes included those for football, hockey, netball, basketball and pool-to name a few. At the end of every youth club year there is one award that stands out, above the others. This prestigious award is Youth Club Personality of the Year and it is awarded to a member in recognition of all they have achieved throughout the year. The award is presented to someone who is keen, cooperative, enthusiastic, dedicated and always on hand to help the leaders. This year the awards went to Kyle McKinley, from the junior group, and Lisa Hemphill, from the senior group. Following the formalities and brief speeches, the fun and entertainment began. The evening started with a rendition of 'Five Current Buns and a poem, An Old Macdonald s Mixed up Farm, complete with costumes and actions by the primary group. This was followed by a comedy act, when junior members took to the stage. Then for the main event of the evening, X-Factor, Gillygooley Style! After weeks of preparation, the young people were able to take to the stage and perform to their hearts were content, giving the likes of Snow Patrol and the Sugababes a run for their money! Acts performed included, Katie Turnstall, Chico, Greenday, Pussycat Dolls and many more. Simon and Sharon, were Calum Rennie and David Moore, senior members of the club and Louise Scott, assistant leader. The judges were given a difficult task and in true X-factor style Simon (Calum Rennie) received some harsh jeering and booing from an energetic and animated crowd. X-Factor judges, Louis, Sharon and Simon, better known as David, Louise and Callum. Winners on the night were Sugababes, James Blunt and Kelly Clarkeson. The night was a huge success and praise must go to Bernie Liggett, who organised the evening s entertainment, with the help of Jennifer O Donnell and Louise Scott.
