A Letter from Father Page 2 July 1, 2012 MAY YOU HAVE A HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY AND A WONDERFUL SUMMER! May God bless you for sharing and continuing to support St. Francis de Sales! As we celebrate the Fourth of July with hot dogs, parades and fireworks, let us give thanks to our great leaders for their foresight in blessing us with life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness when they wrote the Declaration of Independence in 1776. By invoking God, they sought His guidance and spiritual strength for our country. Having visited St. Patrick s Cathedral in New York City many times, I often remember that when you leave the Cathedral by the front door on Fifth Avenue, you can t help but be jolted by the great figure greeting you as you leave. It is Atlas, a mammoth, four-story high statue of the Greek titan, cast in bronze, his arms spread wide as he carries the universe on his back. This statue was created by artist Lew Lawrie in 1937 and is the largest statue in Rockefeller Center, even larger than Prometheus which is down by the skating rink. Atlas makes a powerful statement as one passes through the massive doors of the Cathedral, the house of God, and returns to the world of gods, the gods of deadlines and headaches in midtown Manhattan. Atlas welcomes us back to everything we had been praying about; welcome back to the world and all of its burdens, the weight of the world, that everyone carries on their back. Then we recall the words of Jesus as He offers His help: Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest. For my yoke is easy and my burden light. What a relief to receive these soothing words. He does not what us to attach ourselves to his world with all of the things that weigh us down. Then as we look down the way towards Ellis Island with the magnificent Statue of Liberty beckoning everyone to our shores, we have to give grateful thanks to our ancestors for their tremendous courage and faith in pursuit of a new life in a new country. They have given us our heritage, privilege and freedom of living in this great country. During the summer months, we must find time to get some peace and rest. God is our rest and He is our strength. He is the one who helps us when we feel like Atlas and are carrying the weight of the world. Let us be a beacon of hope for everyone in the Mission world by our thoughtfulness, prayerfulness and solidarity. And, always remember in prayer our men and women who are serving our country to help preserve our freedoms for us. Have a wonderful Fourth of July and don t forget to fly the flag. God bless America and our St. Francis de Sales Family. In Christ s Love,

Their adult children took turns driving John to the hospital for treatments, while a team of friends, neighbors, and parishioners - including their friend Elizabeth - set up a roster to make meals, run errands, and do household chores to ease the burden on the family. In spite of an initial good response to treatment, over a period of weeks John lost ground and it was determined that the cancer had spread. The treatments were painful and exhausting, and with Jane's agreement, John decided to refuse any further procedures and rely on a hospice nurse to help keep him as comfortable as possible. Every time Elizabeth came by she could see John getting weaker and weaker. He did not complain; in fact, he said very little. This once lively and intelligent man seemed deeply troubled. Elizabeth had a sense that the suffering she saw was not just the illness, but something more. Saying nothing to anyone, she decided to pray constantly that John might receive Christ's healing in whatever way he needed it most. A few days later, when the pastor came by to anoint John and give him Communion, John asked to make his confession. Apparently he had cut off all connections with his only brother after a family quarrel forty years before and had never spoken of him since. John said it broke his heart that he had been so unforgiving and he wanted to make peace. John's son traced this unknown and long-lost relative through the Internet. John and his brother had a whole precious day together, and that night John died, calm and healed of heart. Copyright (c) 2011, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The pilgrim experience of going by foot to Santiago de Compostella, the shrine of St. James, reaches its high point a month from now at the feast of the Apostle. By now, tens of thousands of pilgrims are already on the road. Typically, they cover twelve to twenty miles a day through rough territory. The difficult journey and the often primitive lodging facilities are made bearable by the joy of the pilgrims, their songs and prayers. When their journey is documented properly, they receive the scallop shell, a reminder not only of James the fisherman, but also his call to fish for human beings and to baptize the nations. In the Middle Ages, those who wore this badge on their hats were granted lodging and hospitality wherever they went. Next to the palm, the sign of a Jerusalem pilgrim, the scallop shell was most highly prized. In the Middle Ages, some people so enjoyed the pilgrim road, although it was filled with discomfort and danger, that they spent most of their lives on the road. Today, some people take up the route for exercise, but are drawn gradually into the spirituality of the journey. As you make your summer travels, always fold in an element of pilgrimage: a long walk through beautiful countryside, a visit to a church, a prayer of gratitude for your journey through life's hills and valleys. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness. You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism. ~Erma Bombeck
