THE LORD S DAY * CALL TO WORSHIP One: In the midst of the storm, it s easy to lose sight of the horizon. Many: Yet if we keep our eyes fixed on God, we are not lost. One: When waves and wind whip us about, we can lose heart. Many: Yet if we remember God is with us, we can take heart. One: On this voyage we will face perils. Many: Yet let us be courageous, for God is here. All: God s love has overcome the world! * HYMN God Is Here! 280 ABBOT S LEIGH * INVOCATION Dale Osborne PSALM 46 Refrain (sung by all) Priscilla Bratcher One: God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Many: Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be moved, and though the mountains be toppled into the depths of the sea; One: though its waters rage and foam, and though the mountains tremble at its tumult.
Many: The Lord of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our stronghold. Refrain One: There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. Many: God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be overthrown; God shall help it at the break of day. One: The nations make much ado, and the realms are shaken; God has spoken, and the earth shall melt away. Many: The Lord of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our stronghold. Refrain One: Come now and look upon the works of the Lord, what awesome things God has done on earth. Many: It is the Lord who makes war to cease in all the world, who breaks the bow, and shatters the spear, and burns the shields with fire. One: Be still then, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted in the earth. Many: The Lord of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our stronghold. Refrain THE NEW TESTAMENT LESSON One: The word of the Lord. Many: Thanks be to God. Acts 27 from The Message CHILDREN S MUSICAL The Sailor s Bible: The Story of Paul s Shipwreck by Tom S. Long & Allen Pote Good News Good news, hallelujah! Good news, for the tempest-tossed. Good news, if you think you re sinkin, God comes lookin for you when you re lost. Good news, hallelujah! Good news bout a God who saves. Good news, when life is stormy, we can trust the Lord to calm the waves. One day when Paul was preachin, a lame man stood and walked. The crowed declared, This Paul s a god, but he shut down their talk. He said, If you think I m divine, I fear you are confused. I m just an ordinary man who loves to preach good news. He traveled to Jerusalem and preached good news to all. Some trouble makers heard him and tried to start a brawl. They cried, This man deserves to die because his sin is great. But Paul kept right on preaching love to those who shouted hate. Some people won t hear
it, but he keeps preachin. Some people they fear it, but he keeps preachin. Some people are quiet, but he keeps preachin. Sometimes there s a riot, but he keeps preachin to the rich, to the poor, to the high, to the low. There s just nowhere the man won t go, and he keeps on preachin the word. Paul s Shipwreck The wind is rising higher; our hearts are full of dread. The sky is flashing fire; there is thunder overhead. The waves are pounding harder; we are filling up with rain. Who, oh who will saves us from this raging hurricane? Rumble, rumble, crash! Help us God, we cry. Oo, waves smash! Help us or we die. Ah, have no fear of death by wind or wave. Ah, the Lord is near. You will be saved. Romans 8 Our fear is great; our faith is small. Yet in Christ s love, we conquer all. There is no force in time or space can tear us from God s firm embrace. No deadly blade, no hunger s ache, no future shame, no past mistake, no mountain high, no chasm broad can overcome the love of God. A mother s heart cannot be tamed. Love is fierce as flame. Yet there is love more deep and wild: the love God holds for ev ry child. Good News Reprise Good news, hallelujah! Good news, for the tempest-tossed. Good news, if you think you re sinkin, God comes lookin for you when you re lost. Good news, hallelujah! Good news bout a God who saves. Good news, when life is stormy, we can trust the Lord to calm the waves. LUNCH AND LEARN WITH THE REFERENCE TEAM: June 10: The Reference Team and our consultant, David Brubaker invite you to an after worship service lunch and learn opportunity to hear from each other in the congregation. HELP FOR ROSA: Rosa, who is in sanctuary at Church of the Rec, has discovered a passion for jewelry making. Having a productive way to spend her time has lifted her spirits and also given her hope that she might soon be able to sell some of the pieces she has made to contribute to her children s care. On June 3 and 10, Ashley Nissler will be in the narthex before and after church with a basket collecting beads for Rosa. If you have jewelry (primarily with beads) you no longer wear that she could take apart and make into something new (or even jewelry making you know you ll never use again), it would be greatly appreciated. If you have questions, please contact Ashley Nissler at ranissler@mindspring.com. THE INVITATION TO CHRIST S TABLE Holy Communion is a sacred and central part of Christian worship. It is a holy act, in which we, individually and corporately, commune with the Loving God. We welcome all who desire a deepened relationship with Christ to the Communion table. From time to time, questions arise concerning the participation of young children in this congregation s service of Holy Communion. The Diaconate recognizes that two historic Baptist principles inform this decision. Baptists are set apart from many other Christian traditions by our practice of Believer s Baptism, which signifies full membership in the church. Traditionally, many Baptist churches encourage persons to receive the Communion bread and cup for the first time after they have been baptized. At the same time, our historic insistence on Soul Liberty reminds us that Baptists value and respect each believer s unique and personal relationship with God. The Diaconate thus recommends that all members of Binkley continue to deepen their understanding of the meaning of Holy Communion, and that families enter into a time of discernment concerning when their children are able to appreciate the sacred nature of Communion. We affirm the responsibility of all believers to determine whether and when they and their children will partake of the Communion elements as we all participate in the service of Communion. THE DISCRETIONARY FUND Today you are invited to make a special offering to the Pastor Discretionary Fund. This fund allows Binkley to support our church and community members who are in financial crisis. Earmark any checks Discretionary Fund in the item section. Envelopes are available in the chair racks.
