The Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time GN 3:9-15; PS 130:1-8; 2 COR 4:13-5:1; MK 3:20-35 June 10, 2018 Encouraging the Body of Christ to BE the Body of Christ edited/derived from an article by Thomas J. Scirghi Pastoral Liturgy Archdiocese of Chicago (Nov./Dec., 2011) For years, and a habit that continues, even priests say to one another, who is saying the Mass? The Faithful refer to going to Mass, which is, at least, a huge improvement over, attending Mass! There was then (in the 1950's and 60's) an appreciation that, while the pews were packed, the Faithful were simply present to, observers of, the celebration of the Eucharist. There was a real disconnect between the Body of Christ (the Assembly) who often did not regularly receive the Body of Christ. The altar rail was more than an architecture affectation of the sanctuary. It bespoke of an attitude too. Since then, there has been difficulty in getting the Faithful (the parishioners) to assume a greater role in worship in singing, in listening (not reading along) to the Scriptures, in seeing in one another their sister and brother, and their responsibility to MISSION Who we receive in our Mass. People come together readily enough to pray individually. But to see, much less experience, worship as a very different prayer, wherein we enter into the Sacrifice of Christ, to the Father, in the Spirit, offering up our very lives, well, that s quite a different matter.... more to follow...
