THE BUTLER SERVES What might sacrifice mean to you? Every year about this time (the kick-off of our Lottie Moon International Missions Offering Emphasis) I circle back to this same place. And, this same place is wondering what sacrifice might mean for any of us, in our giving, to carry the Gospel of our Lord Jesus to the people who have not yet heard enough of the Gospel and the truth as it is in Jesus, to make a responsible choice to receive or reject Him. And, what it might mean for the furtherance of the Gospel, if we and another 45,000 Southern Baptist Churches across the United States, got the same issue settled. And, we all did something about it! And, that something was indeed sacrifice. Here is what I think: I think the believing, born again church in America can carry the Gospel to every people group on earth in the next quarter century if we did something in our giving that had the feel of sacrifice to it. Here is an example of sacrifice made to carry the Gospel to the ends of the earth: Picture a 25 year-old Adoniram Judson, in 1811, in a letter asking his father in-law to be for his permission to marry the man s daughter. I think this will amaze you: I have now to ask, whether you can consent to part with your daughter early next spring, to see her no more in this world, whether you can consent to her departure, and her subjection to the hardships and sufferings of a missionary life, whether you can consent to her exposure to the dangers of the ocean, to the fatal influence of the southern climate of India, to every kind of want and distress, to degradation, insult, persecution, and perhaps a violent death. Can you consent to all this, for the sake of Him who left His heavenly home, and died for her and for you, for the sake of perishing, immortal soul, for the sake of Zion, and the glory of God? Can you consent to all this, in hope of meeting your daughter in the world of glory, with the crown of righteousness, brightened with the acclamations of praise which shall resound to her Savior from the heathens saved, through her means, from eternal woe and despair? You see, the very basis of Judson s appeal is that God will be glorified though the sacrifice they all will be making to carry the Gospel to those who had no access to the truth as it is in Jesus. His father in-law approved, and in the end it did cost his daughter s life. Adoniram Judson served oversees for 38 years and while there, he buried two wives and seven children, all having died prematurely. Today there are nearly 4,000 Baptist churches with over 500,000 Christ followers in the heart of Buddhist Burma (Myanmar). I am not suggesting to you that you and your family, make anything like the sacrifice Adoniram and Ann Judson and their families made for the Lord Jesus and His work in this world. I am asking you to ask God to show you what sacrifice might look like in your life. And when He shows you, then do something about it. Be obedient to what God shows you to do, to the end that Name might be glorified among all the nations of the earth. To the end that every people group on the face of this earth will have a witness to the saving truth about Jesus Christ. Let s face it, business as usual is no longer acceptable. In fact, it never has been acceptable. It is just what we did. And last year we called home about 20% of our international missionaries because we did not have the money to keep them serving on the field to which the Lord Jesus had sent them. Changing horses, on the same old merry-go-round, will not get the job done. It is our time in the bright lights of eternity. Our time on the stage. Adoniram and Ann Judson played their part so very well. Will we? It is going to come down to sacrifice. Robin the Butler Our church goal: $ 26,000 Received so far: $ 2,570
