Diocesan Synod 21 st June 2014 Agenda Item 6 DS 14/03 Discipleship, Vocation and Team 5 4 3 2 1 Maturity The Aims of this session to share with one another ways in which your parish/church/community is trying to deepen spiritual maturity to learn about some new things which the DVM Team is doing to encourage you to make a personal commitment to action Introduction WORSHIP on the screen 5 Friends 4 Verses of a hymn 3 Words: Let us pray Acts 2 42 end 1 Church, one faith, one Lord 1

5 Marks of Mission (Anglican Consultative Council 1984/90) Ò to proclaim the good news of the Kingdom Ò to teach, baptise and nurture new believers Ò to respond to human need by loving service Ò to seek to transform unjust structures of society, to challenge violence of every kind and to pursue reconciliation Ò to strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth So how are our church communities doing? Do they have a balanced approach? QUESTION ONE At Bishops' Advisory Panels, all potential ordinands are asked which of these Five Marks they find the easiest one to respond to and which they find most challenging. a. In your own parish, for which of these Marks is there most energy and commitment? b. And for which is there least energy and commitment? 2

4 priorities of the post-pentecost 'Church' Steve Summers Acts 2. 42 end 'They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and prayers. Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all as any had need. Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day, the Lord was adding to their number.' NRSV The first Christians concentrated on 4 things: teaching/telling the story fellowship/koinonia/sharing breaking of bread prayers. QUESTION TWO a. To what do you devote yourself in your Christian life - honestly? b. Does your own Church have an identity based on teaching/telling the story, koinonia, breaking of bread and prayer? 3

3 priorities for growing Our common purpose has three legs: Growing in spiritual maturity Growing in numbers Growing in community engagement QUESTION THREE Be honest! Does your parish have this inscribed on its doorposts and on its heart? 2 growing ideas from the DVM Team i. Faith Sharers This is a new starting in Jan 2015, which sits alongside Occasional Preachers and Leaders of Worship. It is based on Scripture, Church tradition, input, reflection and practice. There's a flyer in your pack which can be photocopied and distributed. Booking opens very soon. ii. William Challis Data is on a handout for your information The Team Younger Women report on the May session Vocation Roadshows Local Advisers Open learning opportunities 4

1 action... for you as an individual Christian disciple: what will you take away from this session - and act upon?.. for you as an elected representative on Diocesan Synod. Can you identify people/a group you will tell/inform/discuss/encourage/cajole about something from this session? Growing in depth and spiritual maturity.....5 4 3 2 1 5
