NOVEMBER 2013 Thanksgiving Day is traditionally a day for families and friends to get together for a special meal. The meal often includes a turkey, stuffing, potatoes, cranberry sauce, gravy, vegetables and pumpkin and apple pies. Thanksgiving Day is a time for many people to give thanks for what they have. Here s an easy apple pie recipe that you might enjoy: Ingredients: 3-4 medium apples, peeled, cored and sliced 1 cup sugar 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 1/2 stick unsalted butter, cut into bits 2 store-bought pie crusts Directions Place bottom crust in pan. Add apples, sprinkle with sugar and nutmeg. Top with butter, place top crust over and vent with a few holes poked in pastry top. Bake 375 degrees for one hour. Thanksgiving is a feast of Thanksgiving, held on the fourth Thursday in November in the United States, and the second Monday in October in Canada. Traditionally, it is held to remember the celebration by the Pilgrims of the first harvest in the new North American colony. In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. For more than two centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states. It wasn't until 1863, amidst the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November.

CELEBRATING COLUMBUS DAY On Monday October 14 we celebrated Columbus Day with a National Geographic movie about Columbus. We had a delicious variety of pizzas and beverages. Happy Holidays from Rabbi Lisa Vernon There is an old cliché that the Jewish holidays are always either later or early, but never on time. This year seems to be the quintessential example of that statement. Rosh Hashanah was only two (2) days after Labor Day and, I suspect, many us were barely ready for their arrival. Now we are faced with a once in a lifetime confluence, Chanukah and Thanksgiving coincide. I do remember occasions when Chanukah began on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, and certainly there are many examples of Chanukah falling during Christmas. However, according to all accounts, Chanukah has never begun before Thanksgiving in the past. All of which makes this a remarkable year. How do we relate to this phenomenon? What can we make of this most early arrival of Chanukah? The confluence of Thanksgiving and Chanukah afford us with some unique opportunities. For many families, celebrating Chanukah during the week in which it falls poses challenges of its own. Work, school obligations, distance from relatives, and other issues can result in families gathering over the winter vacation to celebrate, regardless of when Chanukah actually occurs. On the other hand, Thanksgiving is usually a day for families to be together for food, football and friendship. So, this year, we have the opportunity to do both at the same time. Menus which combine the traditional Thanksgiving fare of turkey and stuffing combined with the Chanukah standard of potato latkes abound. Hmm, I wonder how my latkes would taste with cranberry sauce instead of apple sauce? Instead of pumpkin pie, how would sufganiot, the Israeli tradition of jelly doughnuts, stand up to the test? And of course, when would the Chanukiyah, the Chanukah menorah, get lit? Do the little ones get gifts from all the Thanksgiving participants, do we need to be sure that there are enough gifts for each child attending, or do the gifts not get distributed after lighting the Chanukiyah? These are challenges that need to be addressed by both our Thanksgiving hosts and all who will attend the feast. There are no right answers, just new traditions and special memories to be made. Greetings from Bryna November 2013 I hope everyone had an enjoyable October. Carolyn provided some wonderful activities last month. A new edition to the schedule has been Sara Goldstein. Sara has been teaching computer classes for the last few months. She added an arts and crafts class after the computer class. She is now coming at 1pm for the computer class and the art and crafts class is at 2pm. Remember to join Heather on Thursday s at 2pm for exercise. The class is designed for those who may have physical limitations that prevent them from sitting on the floor, getting up and down or going forward into forward bends. The benefits include improvement of balance, posture, stability, coordination, strength, flexibility and peace of mind. We would like to start Classic Movie Matinee s once a month on Friday afternoons at 1pm. Please let us know is you have any movies that you would like to see. OCTOBER 29, 2012 A DAY WE WILL NEVER FORGET! Hurricane Sandy was the deadliest and most destructive hurricane of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season, as well as the second-costliest hurricane in United States history. Wikipedia The center of the storm made landfall just south of Atlantic City, N.J., around 8 p.m., shortly after it had been downgraded from a hurricane to a post-tropical storm. But the lowering in status was no reflection of the power the storm still packed. Many of us were without electricity for days. The weather turned very cold for a few days, so we had to find as many blankets as we had in our homes to keep warm,while spending every night without lights and no TV. The food in our refrigerators went bad after a few days, and we had to find restaurants that were open. Page 9 On October 29, 2013 in an effort to assure the residents of the Jewish Community Housing Corporation that they will be informed and taken care of, we presented a Storm Chaser Event with a presentation from police Sergeant Al Diesso of the South Orange Police Department. At this event he explained the process of finding out information as to the progress of the storm, call the police department was the first place to go for help he said, they are aware of the progress with the electric company and they can give you advice if you need shelter. He gave excellent advice on emergency preparedness and the Jewish Community Housing Corporation set-up two tables with items that we would need in an emergency, from flashlights, battery operated radios, batteries etc. and nonperishable food items which were sold at wholesale prices. Many residents attended the meeting and bought emergency items. The event was a huge success and we will remain JCHC STRONG
