Bible Road Trip ~ Year One Week Two ~ Genesis ~ Part 2 covers Genesis chapters 12-36. This week, we continue our study of Genesis, the first book of the Pentateuch. We re still reading in the genre of historical narrative. That means we re reading real history, told in the form of a story. The story this week becomes really interesting as we move from primeval history, covering the whole of mankind, to patriarchal history, covering the story of just one family, chosen by God to be set aside for His own purposes. We re taking a look at Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Jacob s twelve sons the family line of the nation of Israel. In the process, we ll learn about the family lines of many of Israel s neighbors. For instance, Abraham s son Ishmael (from his union with Sarah s Egyptian servant Hagar) becomes the father of the Arab nations. Jacob s brother Esau became the father of the Edomites. These details become very interesting as we see how the nations interact throughout the Old Testament and in our world today. There are two major themes through our reading this week. The first is God s election of His chosen people through Abraham. We ll see God call Abraham to follow Him. God selects Isaac as the bloodline for His chosen nation, rather than Ishmael. God then chooses Jacob as the father of the nation of Israel, rather than Jacob s older brother Esau. God doesn t leave the women out; He chooses Leah, Rachel s older sister, as the mother of Judah the bloodline of Christ and Levi the bloodline of the priesthood. We ll read next week about how God uses Joseph (Rachel s son) to preserve His chosen people. The second major theme in this section of Scripture is the Abrahamic covenant. God s promises to Abraham, interestingly, are one-sided. They are not dependent on Abraham s behavior, nor are they dependent on the behavior of his descendents. Rather, God has chosen to bless Abraham. The memory verses this week all relate to faith (as displayed by Abraham) and God s grace and mercy (as shown to Abraham). Our prayer focus this week is the Druzes (a Near Eastern people group with a secret religion) for the Grammar stages, and Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen for the Dialectic and Rhetoric stages. There is more emphasis this week on biblical archaeology. Children will begin to understand the lands of the Bible as real places, and the people they study as historical figures people who left behind a record of their existence.
