We welcome, serve, and educate.

Dear Parishioners, The Gospel reading of this weekend, taken from the Gospel of Matthew, contains the conclusion of Jesus missionary discourse. Jesus instructs his apostles on the sacrifices involved and the priorities they must embrace if they want to be his messengers to the world. Being a messenger of Christ or even a disciple of Christ is not easy. Christ demands sacrifices. Christ invites us to be his disciples. If we follow Christ we will also have to make sacrifices. Jesus says, Anyone who does not take up his daily cross and follow me is not worthy of me. I am very grateful to the parish for the celebration of my 25 th year of ordination. I was ordained on the 27 th of May, 1992. I would like to thank Michael Mello and the Choir for the lovely music and Deacon Ed Cunningham for the lovely homily. I would like to thank Sissy Ratto and Natalie Larraga, who together with the Deacons and their wives, Ed and Cathy Cunningham, Bob and Gail Meave, Bernie and Dolores O Halloran and Joan Mann Thomas took care of the wonderful reception after the Mass. Thank you. Yours sincerely, Fr. Jose Shaji, Pastor Postage for Military Care Packages As we prepare to celebrate our country s Independence Day, let us remember all the men and women who made our independence possible as well as all those in the military who serve to protect our freedoms. Receiving a Care Package from home is a small gesture which brings great joy to our soldiers. A local group, who builds these packages and sends them oversees, is in need of funds to help pay for the postage. A donation of any amount would be greatly appreciated. You are welcome to put a donation in the Offertory Basket or send one to the Parish Office. Please be sure to indicate that the funds are for Military Packages. Thank you for your support! FREEDOM Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves and under a just God cannot long retain it. --Abraham Lincoln John R. Quinn, Archbishop Emeritus of San Francisco and a former president of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, died early June 22 nd, after a long illness. Archbishop Quinn, who was an advocate of interfaith cooperation, died at the Jewish Home of San Francisco after a long hospital stay. He was 88. He served as Archbishop of San Francisco from 1977 to 1995, and had built a reputation as an advocate of social justice and a leader in the liberalization of the Catholic Church. In his retirement, he lectured and wrote two books on reform of the papacy and was working on a third when he died. He served in parish posts and taught in a seminary. In 1964, Archbishop Quinn was appointed provost of the University of San Diego College for Men and soon engineered a merger with the school s women s college to create the University of San Diego. In October 1967, at age 38, he was named Auxiliary Bishop of San Diego. He was the youngest Catholic Bishop in the U.S. and was clearly marked for higher posts. In November, 1971 Pope Paul VI named him Bishop of Oklahoma City and Tulsa. Two years later, the position was raised in status and he became Archbishop of Oklahoma City. In February 1977, he succeeded Joseph McGucken as the sixth Archbishop of San Francisco. Eight months later, he was elected President of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops. In San Francisco, he presided over the creation of the Diocese of San Jose. He also received important assignments from Rome, including Pontifical Delegate for Religious Life in the United States. Archbishop Quinn was often called to Rome to mediate disputes between the Vatican and the American church. Archbishop Quinn will be dearly missed by his fellow clergy as well as all whom he shepherded. May he rest in peace. Celebrating Fr. Jose s 25th Jubilee of his Ordination to the Priesthood- On Sunday, June 25 th at the 10am mass, Fr. Jose celebrated his Silver Jubilee. Deacon Ed gave a moving homily in honor of our beloved Pastor, and after, the congregation was invited to a reception in our parish hall and courtyard. Along with St. Anselm parishioners, the celebration was attended by good friends and former parishioners from Fr. Jose s previous parishes:st. Dennis, St. Hilary, and St. John the Evangelist. It was great to see our Pastor surrounded by so much love. May God continue to bless Fr. Jose and our community with many more joyous memories with him. We are truly blessed to have him at St. Anselm Church and School.
