Concerning the letter on the next page: IF you or your family decide to make a donation towards the renovations in the monastery/rectory, PLEASE make the cheque payable to BASILIAN FATHERS and also on the line for the reason for the cheque write: MONASTERY RENOVATIONS

St. Basil the Great Ukrainian Catholic Parish 7007 109 Street Edmonton, AB T6H 3B9 Tel. [780] 434-8010 Fax. [780] 438-3189 Email: st.basils@shawbiz.ca October 9, 2017 Dear Parishioners and Guests Since the beginning of August, a few changes have taken place within the Edmonton Basilian Father s community that resulted in the need to make some renovations to the second floor of the oldest section of the Parish Monastery/Rectory. One change is that the House of Studies became too expensive to operate for just two Brother Seminarians. As a result, the Director and Brothers were relocated to St. Basil s Parish Monastery/Rectory as of September 1, this year. To accommodate the additional members, we needed to make these renovations sooner than anticipated. Five rooms, a hallway washroom and the hallway were repainted. New flooring was installed in three rooms and the hallway, and personal washrooms were upgraded. The changes helped to incorporate a washer and dryer to be installed. In the Office area we had to accommodate the House of Studies administration. The north side aluminum windows of this section on both floors were in need of replacement as well as the window coverings for the second floor rooms. The Total costs at present are: Renovations $73,353.25 16 Windows $26,040.41 Window covering $6,854.36 TOTAL $106,248.02 First of all, this letter is to inform you of the changes that have or are taking place. Help is needed to pay for these renovations and window replacements. Thus, individual and Parish Organization donations towards this renovation project will be gratefully accepted. The Basilian Fathers will help with the costs. May our Lord and God, Jesus Christ, through the intercession of all the saints especially St. Basil the Great and St. Josaphat be granted to you! Fr. Josaphat Tyrkalo OSBM Pastor of St. Basil the Great Ukrainian Catholic Parish Superior of St. Basil the Great Monastery

Kevin, age 5, and Ryan, age 3, began arguing over which one of them would get the first of the pancakes their mom was making for breakfast. Mom saw an opportunity for a moral lesson and said, "Jesus would say, 'Let my brother have the first pancake. I can wait. Kevin turned to Ryan and said, "You be Jesus!" A father was at the beach with his children when his 4-yearold son ran up to him, grabbed his hand and led him down the shore to where a gull lay dead in the sand. The boy wanted to know what happened to the bird. The dad explained that it had died and gone to heaven. The boy looked down at the bird, then up at his father and asked, "Did God throw him back down?" Grandma s Age: Little Johnny asked his Grandma how old she was. Grandma answered, 39 and holding. Johnny thought for a moment and then said, and how old would you be if you let go? While Mary was running and praying, she tripped on a curb and fell, getting her clothes dirty and tearing her dress. She got up, brushed herself off, and started running again! As she ran she once again began to pray "Dear Lord, please do not let me be late... But please do not shove me either!" Old aunts used to come up to me at weddings, poking me in the ribs and cackling, telling me, "You are next." They stopped after I started doing the same thing to them at funerals. A woman marries a man expecting he will change, but he does not. A man marries a woman expecting that she will not change, and she does. Older people's sense of humour... A Doctor was addressing a large audience in Tampa. "The material we put into our stomachs is enough to have killed most of us sitting here, years ago. Red meat is awful. Soft drinks corrode your stomach lining. Chinese food is loaded with MSG. High fat diets can be disastrous, and none of us realizes the long-term harm caused by the germs in our drinking water. But, there is one thing that is the most dangerous of all and we all have, or will, eat it. Can anyone here tell me what food it is that causes the most grief and suffering for years after eating it?" After several seconds of quiet, a 75-year-old man in the front row raised his hand, and softly said, "Wedding Cake."

TEACHER: George Washington not only chopped down his father's cherry tree, but also admitted it. Now, Louie, do you know why his father did not punish him? Irish Luck His name was Fleming, and he was a poor Scottish farmer. One day, while trying to make a living for his family, he heard a cry for help coming from a nearby bog. He dropped his tools and ran to the bog. There, mired to his waist in black muck, was a terrified boy, screaming and struggling to free himself. Farmer Fleming saved the lad from what could have been a slow and terrifying death. The next day, a fancy carriage pulled up to the Scotsman's sparse surroundings. An elegantly dressed nobleman stepped out and introduced himself as the father of the boy Farmer Fleming had saved. 'I want to repay you,' said the Nobleman. 'You saved my son's life.' 'No, I cannot accept payment for what I did,' the Scottish farmer replied waving off the offer. At that moment, the farmer's own son came to the door of the family hovel. 'Is that your son?' the nobleman asked. 'Yes,' the farmer replied proudly. 'I will make you a deal. Let me provide him with the level of education my own son will enjoy. If the lad is anything like his father, he will no doubt grow to be a man we both will be proud of.' And that he did. Farmer Fleming's son attended the very best schools and in time, graduated from St. Mary's Hospital Medical School in London, and went on to become known throughout the world as the noted Sir Alexander Fleming, the discoverer of Penicillin. Years afterward, the same nobleman's son who was saved from the bog was stricken with pneumonia. What saved his life this time? Penicillin. The name of the nobleman? Lord Randolph Churchill. His son's name? Sir Winston Churchill. Someone once said: What goes around comes around. Work like you do not need the money. Love like you have never been hurt. Dance like nobody is watching. Sing like nobody is listening. Live like it is Heaven on Earth. AN IRISH FRIENDSHIP WISH: May there always be work for your hands to do; May your purse always hold a coin or two; May the sun always shine on your window pane; May a rainbow be certain to follow each rain; May the hand of a friend always be near you; May God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you.
