Instructions It is customary to pray the Office standing, but for penance it can be prayed kneeling. Alleluia is said at all the Hours throughout the year except from Compline of the day before Ash Day to Compline of the 4th weekday in Holy Week when it is replaced by Praise be to thee, O Lord, King of eternal glory. If you pray the Office alone, recite all the prayers yourself. All prayers without V. or R. are recited together except for the psalms. The verses in the psalms are separated by a space and should be alternately recited by the leader and responders. The leader begins each psalm and always leads the Glory Be. Whenever there is a, bless yourself. For the Opening Prayer for the Offices, make the cross over your lips with your right thumb. For the prayer Convert us, O God during Compline, make the cross over your heart with your right thumb. Leader (V.) and Responders (R.) Unless otherwise designated by V. or R., the leader and responders pray the prayer together. Apostles Creed, Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be, and Confiteor Whenever the Apostles Creed, Our Father, Hail Mary, or Glory Be is said, the leader recites the first part and the responders the second part. The Confiteor is recited together. Apostles Creed V. I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the living and the dead. R. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen. Our Father V. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. R. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. Hail Mary V. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. R. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Glory Be V. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. R. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, forever and ever. Amen. Confiteor I confess to Almighty God, to Blessed Mary ever Virgin, to blessed Michael the Archangel, to blessed John the Baptist, to the holy apostles Peter and Paul, to all the saints, and to you, brethren, that I have sinned exceedingly in thought, word, and deed: (strike breast three times, saying) through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault. Therefore I beseech Blessed Mary ever Virgin, blessed Michael the Archangel, blessed John the Baptist, the holy apostles Peter and Paul, all the saints, and you, brethren, to pray to the Lord our God for 5 Prayers after the Divine Office Spiritual Communion My Jesus, I believe that thou art really present in the Most Blessed Sacrament of the Altar. I love thee above everything else, and I long to receive thee into my soul. I cannot now receive thee in Holy Communion, but I beg thee to come to me at least spiritually. I embrace thee as already there and unite myself entirely to thee. Grant that I may never be separated from thee! Anima Christi Soul of Christ, sanctify Body of Christ, save Blood of Christ, inebriate Water from the side of Christ, wash Passion of Christ, strengthen O my good Jesus, hear Within thy wounds hide Suffer me not to be separated from thee. From the malignant enemy defend In the hour of death call me and bid me come unto thee so that with thy saints I may praise thee forever and ever. Amen. MLR Ending Prayers I am all thine and all that I have is thine, O most loving Jesus, through Mary, thy most holy Mother. Amen. Most holy and adorable Face of Jesus, have mercy on us and on our suffering brothers in purgatory. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon May they rest in peace. Amen. Eternal Father, I offer thee the most adorable Face of thy dearly beloved Son for the honor and glory of thy name, the conversion of sinners, the perseverance of the just, the relief of the suffering souls in purgatory, and the salvation of the dying. Amen. The following prayers are to be said standing. Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil

spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us! Precious Blood of Jesus, save us! Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us! St. Joseph, pray for us! Jesus, Mary, Joseph, I love thee, save souls! Our Lady of Conquistadora, pray for us! Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us! Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, pray for us! In the following prayer at the words lie in wait for her heel, lift your foot and press your heel into the ground as if to crush Satan with your heel (good Catholics are Mary s heel). Genesis 3:15: I will put enmities between thee and the woman and thy seed and her seed; she shall crush thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Beginning and Ending Prayers for Offices Matins Beginning OPEN my mouth, O Lord, to bless thy holy name; cleanse also my heart from all vain, evil and distracting thoughts; enlighten my understanding, inflame my will, that I may worthily recite this Office with attention and devotion and deserve to be heard in the presence of thy divine majesty. Through Christ our Amen. O Lord, in union with that divine intention with which thou didst praise God on earth, I offer to thee this Hour. Our Father... Hail Mary... Apostles Creed... V. O Lord, thou wilt open my lips. R. And my mouth will announce thy praise. V. O God, come to my assistance. R. O Lord, make haste to help Alleluia is said at all the Hours throughout the year except from Compline of the day before Ash Day to Compline of the 4th weekday in Holy Week when it is replaced by Praise be to thee, O Lord, King of eternal glory. Psalm 94 The Invitatory Before Psalm 94 the whole invitatory of the day is said twice. Between verses of the psalm, either the whole invitatory or the second part of the invitatory (after the *) is said as indicated below. The Lord s Day: The Lord who made us, * Come, let us adore. Second Weekday: Come, * Let us sing joyfully to the Third Weekday: Let us sing joyfully to God, * The Rock of our salvation. Fourth Weekday: The Lord, a great God, * Come, let us adore. Fifth Weekday: The great Lord and King, * Come, let us adore. Sixth Weekday: The Lord our God, * Come, let us adore. Seventh Weekday: People of the Lord and sheep of his pasture, * Come, let us adore. Feasts of the B. V. Mary: Holy Mary, Virgin Mother of God, * Intercede for us. Offices of the Dead: The King for whom all things live, * Come, let us adore. Recite the whole invitatory twice. COME, let us praise the Lord with joy; let us joyfully sing to God our saviour. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving and make a joyful noise to him with psalms. Recite the whole invitatory. For the Lord is a great God and a great King above all gods. For in his hand are all the ends of the earth, and the heights of the mountains are his. 6 Recite the second part of the invitatory. For the sea is his and he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. (kneel) Come, let us adore and fall down and weep before the Lord (stand) that made us. For he is the Lord our God, and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand. Recite the whole invitatory. Today if you shall hear his voice, harden not your hearts. As in the provocation, according to the day of temptation in the wilderness where your fathers tempted me, they proved me and saw my works. Recite the second part of the invitatory. Forty years long was I offended with that generation, and I said: These always err in heart. And these men have not known my ways, so I swore in my wrath that they shall not enter into my rest. Recite the whole invitatory. Recite the second part of the invitatory, and then recite the whole invitatory. Continue at Day 1, p. 16; 2, p. 29; 3, p. 39; 4, p. 48; 5, p. 59; 6, p. 69; 7, p. 81, for Matins. Ending V. At midnight have I risen to give praise unto thee. R. Because of the judgment of thy justice. Te Deum (Ambrosian Hymn) We praise thee, O God; we acclaim thee Lord and Master. Everlasting Father, all the world bows down before thee. All the angels sing thy praise, the hosts of heaven and all the angelic powers. All the Cherubim and Seraphim call out to thee in unending chorus: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God of angel hosts! The heavens and the earth are filled, Lord, with thy majesty and glory.

Thy praises are sung by the renowned Apostles; By all the prophets, who themselves deserve our praise; By that mighty white-robed army who shed their blood for Christ. And to the ends of the earth, the Holy Church proclaims her faith in thee, Father, whose majesty is boundless; Thy only Son, who is true God and who is to be adored; The Holy Spirit, sent to be our Advocate. O Christ, the King of glory! Thou alone are the Father s eternal Son. When thou wast to become man so as to save mankind, thou didst not shrink back from the chaste Virgin s womb. When thou triumphantly destroyed death s sting, thou opened up to believers the kingdom of heaven. Thou art now enthroned at God s right hand, in the Father s glory. We believe that thou wilt come for judgment. (The following verse is said kneeling.) We therefore implore thee to grant thy servants grace and aid, for thou shed thy precious blood for their redemption. Admit them all to the ranks of thy saints in everlasting glory. Be the Savior of thy faithful people, Lord; grant them thy blessing, for they belong to thee. Be their shepherd, Lord; uphold and exalt them forever and ever. Day by day we praise thee; daily we acclaim thee. We will confess and glorify thy holy name, now and for all eternity. In thy great mercy, Lord, throughout this day keep us free from sin by thy protection. Have mercy on us, we humbly pray; Lord, have mercy on us. May thy mercy, Lord, thy loving kindness, always remain with us, for we have placed our confidence in thee. In thee alone, Lord, I have hoped; may I not be disappointed. V. The Lord be with thee. R. And with thy spirit. V. Let us bless the R. Thanks be to God. V. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. R. Amen. And according to the multitude of thy tender mercies, blot out my iniquity. Wash me yet more from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my iniquity, and my sin is always before To thee only have I sinned and have done evil before thee, that thou mayest be justified when thou speakest and be in the right when thou judgest. For behold, I was conceived in iniquities and in sins did my mother conceive For behold, thou hast loved truth; the uncertain and hidden things of thy wisdom thou hast made manifest to Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be cleansed; thou shalt wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow. To my hearing thou shalt give joy and gladness, and the bones that have been humbled shall rejoice. Turn away thy face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. Create a clean heart in me, O God; and renew a right spirit within my bowels. Cast me not away from thy face, and take not thy holy spirit from Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation, and strengthen me with a perfect spirit. I will teach the unjust thy ways, and the wicked shall be converted to thee. Deliver me from blood, O God, thou God of my salvation, and my tongue shall extol thy justice. O Lord, thou wilt open my lips and my mouth shall declare thy praise. For if thou hadst desired sacrifice, I would indeed have given it; with burnt offerings thou wilt not be delighted. A sacrifice to God is an afflicted spirit; a contrite and humbled heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. 8 Deal favourably, O Lord, in thy good will with Sion, that the walls of Jerusalem may be built up. Hymn NOW from the slumbers of the night arising, Chant we the holy psalmody of David, Hymns to our Master, with a voice concordant, Sweetly intoning. So may our Monarch pitifully hear us, That we may merit with his saints to enter Mansions eternal, therewithal possessing Joy beatific. This be our portion, God forever blessed, Father eternal, Son, and Holy Spirit, Whose is the glory, which through all creation Ever resounded. Amen. I NOCTURN Ant. 1 Blessed is the man. Psalm 1 BLESSED is the man who hath not walked in the counsel of the ungodly nor stood in the way of sinners nor sat in the chair of pestilence. But his will is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he shall meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree which is planted near the running waters, which shall bring forth its fruit in due season. And his leaf shall not fall off, and all whosoever he shall do shall prosper. Not so the wicked, not so, but like the dust which the wind driveth from the face of the earth. Therefore the wicked shall not rise again in judgment, nor sinners in the council of the just. For the Lord knoweth the way of the just, and the way of the wicked shall perish. Ant. Blessed is the man that exerciseth himself in the law of the Ant. 2 Serve the Psalm 2 WHY have the Gentiles raged and the people devised vain things? The kings of the earth stood up and the princes met together against the Lord and against his Christ. Let us break their bonds asunder, and let us cast away their yoke from us. He that dwelleth in heaven shall laugh at them, and the Lord shall deride Then shall he speak to them in his anger and trouble them in his rage. But I am appointed king by him over Sion his holy mountain, preaching his commandment. The Lord hath said to me: Thou art my son; this day have I begotten thee. Ask of me and I will give thee the Gentiles for thy inheritance and the utmost parts of the earth for thy possession. Thou shalt rule them with a rod of iron and shalt break them in pieces like a potter s vessel. And now, O ye kings, understand; receive instruction, you that judge the earth. Serve ye the Lord with fear, and rejoice unto him with trembling. Embrace discipline lest at any time the Lord be angry and you perish from the just way. When his wrath shall be kindled in a short time, blessed are all they that trust in him. Ant. Serve the Lord in fear, and rejoice unto him with reverence. Ant. 3 Up, 16 Psalm 3 WHY, O Lord, are they multiplied that afflict me? Many are they who rise up against Many say to my soul: There is no salvation for him in his God. But thou, O Lord, art my protector, my glory, and the lifter up of my head. I have cried to the Lord with my voice, and he hath heard me from his holy hill. I have slept and taken my rest, and I have risen up because the Lord hath protected I will not fear thousands of the people surrounding Arise, O Lord; save me, O my God. For thou hast struck all them who are my adversaries without cause, thou hast broken the teeth of sinners. Salvation is of the Lord and thy blessing is upon thy people. Ant. Up, Lord, and help me, O my God. II NOCTURN Ant. 4 How admirable. Psalm 8 O LORD our Lord, how admirable is thy name in the whole earth! For thy magnificence is elevated above the heavens. Out of the mouth of infants and of sucklings thou hast perfected praise because of thy enemies, that thou mayst destroy the enemy and the avenger. For I will behold thy heavens, the works of thy fingers, the moon and the stars which thou hast founded. What is man that thou art mindful of him? Or the son of man that thou visitest him? Thou hast made him a little less than the angels, thou hast crowned him with glory and honour And hast set him over the works of thy hands.

Thou hast subjected all things under his feet, all sheep and oxen, moreover the beasts also of the fields, The birds of the air and the fishes of the sea that pass through the paths of the sea. O Lord our Lord, how admirable is thy name in all the earth! Ant. How admirable is thy name, O Lord, in all the earth! Ant. 5 Thou hast sat on the throne. Psalm 9, i I WILL give praise to thee, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will relate all thy wonders. I will be glad and rejoice in thee; I will sing to thy name, O thou most high. When my enemy shall be turned back, they shall be weakened and perish before thy face. For thou hast maintained my judgment and my cause; thou hast sat on the throne, who judgest justice. Thou hast rebuked the Gentiles, and the wicked one hath perished; thou hast blotted out their name for ever and ever. The swords of the enemy have failed unto the end, and their cities thou hast destroyed. Their memory hath perished with a noise. But the Lord remaineth for ever. He hath prepared his throne in judgment. And he shall judge the world in equity, he shall judge the people in justice. And the Lord is become a refuge for the poor, a helper in due time in tribulation. And let them trust in thee who know thy name, for thou hast not forsaken them that seek thee, O Ant. Thou hast sat on the throne, who judgest justice. Ant. 6 Arise, O Psalm 9, ii SING ye to the Lord, who dwelleth in Sion; declare his ways among the Gentiles. For requiring their blood he hath remembered them; he hath not forgotten the cry of the poor. Have mercy on me, O Lord; see my humiliation which I suffer from my enemies, Thou that liftest me up from the gates of death, that I may declare all thy praises in the gates of the daughter of Sion. I will rejoice in thy salvation; the Gentiles have stuck fast in the destruction which they prepared. Their foot hath been taken in the very snare which they hid. The Lord shall be known when he executeth judgments; the sinner hath been caught in the works of his own hands. The wicked shall be turned into hell, all the nations that forget God. For the poor man shall not be forgotten to the end; the patience of the poor shall not perish for ever. Arise, O Lord, let not man be strengthened; let the Gentiles be judged in thy sight. Appoint, O Lord, a lawgiver over them, that the Gentiles may know themselves to be but men. Ant. Arise, O Lord, let not man be strengthened. III NOCTURN Ant. 7 Why standest thou. Psalm 9, iii WHY, O Lord, hast thou retired afar off? Why dost thou slight us in our wants in the time of trouble? Whilst the wicked man is proud, the poor is set on fire; they are caught in the counsels which they devise. For the sinner is praised in the desires of his soul and the unjust man is blessed. The sinner hath provoked the Lord; according to the multitude of his wrath, he will not seek him. God is not before his eyes; his ways are filthy at all times. Thy judgments are removed from his sight; he shall rule over all his enemies. For he hath said in his heart: I shall not be moved from generation to generation and shall be without evil. His mouth is full of cursing and of bitterness and of deceit; under his tongue are labour and sorrow. He sitteth in ambush with the rich in private places, that he may kill the innocent. His eyes are upon the poor man; he lieth in wait in secret like a lion in his den. He lieth in ambush, that he may catch the poor man, to catch the poor whilst he draweth him to him. In his net he will bring him down; he will crouch and fall when he shall have power over the poor. For he hath said in his heart: God hath forgotten; he hath turned away his face not to see to the end. Ant. Why standest thou so far off, O Lord? Ant. 8 Arise, O Lord God.
