ENGLISH & MALAYALAM SOLO SONG RULES & GUIDELINES 1. Participants are only allowed to sing the song assigned to their grade (The lyrics and mp3 file for the song will be provided. The given song shall not exceed one stanza and a chorus or two stanzas for songs without chorus). 2. Participants are expected to memorize the lyrics of the song, and are not allowed to read the lyrics from a paper or any electronic device. 3. The performance of each song has a maximum time limit of not more than 2 min 4. No accompanying instruments will be allowed. 5. Microphones will be provided to the participants. 6. Songs for KG & Grade 1&2 levels will be graded on the following criteria: Pitch: adherence to the note and melody of the song Clarity: pronunciation of words Strength: steadiness of voice power, confidence Rhythm: tempo and timing of the song 7. The songs for Grade 3&4, 5&6, 7&8 & 9 &10 levels will be graded on the following criteria: Pitch: adherence to the note and melody of the song Clarity: annunciation & pronunciation of words Strength & Stage Presence: steadiness of voice power, eye contact and confidence Rhythm: tempo and timing of the song 8. Violations of the rules may lead to disqualification. 9. Scoring of the judges will be final.

STORYTELLING RULES & GUIDELINES 1. A biblical story based on a given topic assigned to each grade and shall be given in English. The biblical content can be edited/condensed for the storytelling competition to fit within the time limit. Grade Kindergarten - David and Goliath (1 Samuel 17) Grades 1 & 2 - Abraham & Isaac Testing of Abraham (Genesis 22:1-19) Grades 3 & 4 - Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32) Grades 5& 6 - Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13:1-13, 18-23) 2. The story must be memorized and not read. 3. Hand movements and facial expression are allowed but dramatization is prohibited (the performer shall not use any props and shall remain in one location). 4. The duration of the story shall not exceed 3 minutes. Time limit will be strictly enforced (at 2 minutes 30 second mark, a 30 second warning will be signaled by the judges). 5. Story telling shall be graded on the following: Content How well the story adheres to the Biblical passages it is taken from and application of the story to the world or our lives. Clarity Annunciation and pronunciation of words and voice strength. Presentation Memorization, audience contact, body language, and gestures. 6. Scoring of the judges will be final.

ELOCUTION RULES & GUIDELINES 1. The goal of the Elocution competition is to encourage the skills and talents related to the art of speaking in public for the goal of sharing one s faith and expositing from the Word of God. 2. The topic will be informed to the participant on June 12 th, the Sunday before the Olympiad. Participants will be given two suggested key verses from which they can anchor their talk. But they are free to use either one, or any verses which they feel best illustrate their topic. The speech may not exceed 5 minutes in duration. The time limit will be strictly enforced. A 30 second warning will be given. 3. The speaker is expected to memorize their speech, and is not allowed to read any part of the speech from papers, notes, or cards. Use of index cards is allowed, but only for reference of outline and key points. Reading verbatim from note cards is discouraged and will result in reduction in the participants score. 4. Points will be awarded based on the following criteria: a. CONTENT i. Greeting & Introduction of the subject ii. Exposition of the main theme (Conciseness & Clarity of message, Originality/Points of interest, Incorporation of Personal references, Quotations & Biblical References) iii. Moral & Practical Application iv. Conclusion b. SPEAKING PRESENTATION i. Memorization (evaluated by pauses and amount of referring to index cards) ii. Verbal Clarity (Annunciation and pronunciation of words, voice strength and projection) iii. Presentation/Speaking Style (Mannerisms, Audience contact and voice modulation, Ability to keep the audience engaged by their speaking style) 5. Scoring of the judges will be final.

RECITATION RULES & GUIDELINES 1. The goal of this competition is to encourage the Sunday school students to learn the Lord s Prayer, Books of the Bible, and Psalms 121. 2. Classes and the corresponding recitation and time allotment are as follows: CLASS PASSAGE TIME ALLOTTED Kindergarten The Lord s Prayer 1 ½ minutes Grades 1 and 2 Books of the Bible 2 minutes Grades 3 and 4 Psalms 121: 1-8 3 minutes 3. Each student must recite their passage in the specified version. The Lord s Prayer will be recited based on the Mar Thoma liturgy (page 60-61). Recite Books of the Bible (Old and New Testament). Psalms 121 will be recited based on the New International Version (NIV). 4. The passage must be recited from memory. Note cards or any other aides will not be allowed. 5. The competition shall be judged on following criteria: ACCURACY Accuracy and order of words, and adherence to time limit CLARITY Clear pronunciation of the words, voice strength, and stage presence. 6. Time limit will be strictly enforced (a 30 second warning will be signaled by the judges). 7. Scoring of the judges will be final.

RECITATION PASSAGE LIST The Lord s Prayer Mar Thoma Liturgy This is the passage that grades Kindergarten will recite for competition. Participants will be asked to recite this passage orally. All participants must learn the passage in the version shown below (Mar Thoma Liturgy). Other versions of this passage will not be given credit. Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name; May Your kingdom come, May Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us; Do not bring us to the time of trial, but deliver us from the evil one. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours Now and forever. Amen.

RECITATION PASSAGE LIST Psalm 121 - New International Version This is the passage that grades 3 and 4 will recite for competition. Participants will be asked to recite this passage orally. All participants must learn the passage in the version shown below (NIV). Other versions of this passage will not be given credit. INSTRUMENTAL SOLO RECITATION - RULES & GUIDELINES 1. The goal of the instrumental solo performance/recital is to motivate and inspire the Sunday school children to play Christian songs. 2. Each participant must perform one piece of music/repertoire. 3. Each piece of music must be memorized. A copy of his/her piece may be used for reference. 4. Each participant is allowed to perform a Christian song preferably a Christian hymn arrangement of his/her choice. 5. Length of the performance is limited to 2 minutes. 6. Each participant must provide a copy of his/her selected piece (sheet music) to the Olympiad committee by Saturday, June 4 th. This copy will be used by the Judges during the event. Any changes to the selected piece after June 4 th will not be accepted. 7. Each participant may perform their piece with or without repeats. Cuts are not allowed. 8. A keyboard will be provided to the students playing the piano. Participant playing wind and other string instruments, must bring their own instrument. 9. Judging criteria: Participants will be graded on the following categories: Accuracy: Note accuracy, Fluency Musicianship: Melody, Harmony, Tempo, Dynamics Time Limit: adherence to time limit 10. Scoring of the judges will be final.

TEAM BIBLE READING RULES & GUIDELINES 1. GOAL a. The goal of the game is to encourage an individual s knowledge of the order of the Books of the Bible and foster one s ability to find and recite a specific passage given its reference in a short amount of time. 2. ELIGIBILITY & TEAMS a. Those who have completed 5th-10th grade in Sunday School in the 2015-2016 Academic year are eligible to participate. b. Based on the final number of participants, as far as possible, teams will be created with an equal distribution of members of different ages. 3. GAME RULES a. Teams will be seated with nothing but Bibles in front of them. b. Each team member will be provided with a standard NIV Bible, the same bible which can be found at the Garden Grove United Methodist Church. Personal Bibles cannot be used. c. Each team will be given a buzzer with which they can buzz when they have found a given passage. d. A buzzer and a box with random bible passages on slips of paper will be in the possession of the game moderator. e. At the beginning of a round, the moderator will pull out and recite the given bible passage reference and repeat it once before sounding his buzzer. Team members are allowed to search for the passage only after the moderator has finished reciting the reference two times and the buzzer has been rung. f. Use of the contents page or index is prohibited. g. The team member who first finds the passage will buzz in for their team. Once a team member has buzzed in, they must stop searching for the passage. The first team to find the passage will be noted while the remaining teams continue to search for the passage. Assuming three teams, the search phase will end once a second team has buzzed in. There will be a 60 second time limit per search round. h. There will be one trial round for practice. i. Once two teams have buzzed in. The first person to buzz in will then need to stand up with their Bible and do a Bible Reading of the passage. After which, the second person from the second team will also stand and recite the bible passage. j. 5 points will be awarded for the first place team and 3 points will be awarded to the second place team in each round. k. For each subsequent round, the winning individual of the previous round is ineligible to buzz in. But he or she is allowed only to assist his team members verbally, without touching any other person s bibles. l. There will be 10 rounds or a maximum time of roughly 30 minutes for the whole game. m. The team with the most points will win the Gold. The team with the second most points will win the Silver. Any remaining teams will win the Bronze.
