THE EIGHTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST JULY 15, 2018 TODAY'S WORSHIP Divine Service III LSB pages 184-202 L = Liturgist * = Stand C = Congregation PRELUDE 10:30 Winds of Peace Fanfare and Flourishes James Curnow Come Thou Font of Every Blessing Arr: Johnnie Vinson WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS *HYMN OF INVOCATION The Church s One Foundation LSB 644 1. The Church s one foundation Is Jesus Christ, her Lord; She is His new creation By water and the Word. From heav n He came and sought her To be His holy bride; With His own blood He bought her, And for her life He died. 2. Though with a scornful wonder The world sees her oppressed, By schisms rent asunder, By heresies distressed, Yet saints their watch are keeping; Their cry goes up, How long? And soon the night of weeping Shall be the morn of song. 3. Through toil and tribulation And tumult of her war She waits the consummation Of peace forevermore, Till with the vision glorious Her longing eyes are blest, And the great Church victorious Shall be the Church at rest. *INVOCATION AND GENERAL CONFESSION L: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. BAPTISM (5:00) L: Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the faithful: C: And kindle in them the fire of Your love. L: Send forth, O Lord, Your Spirit: C: And renew the face of the earth. L: The Spirit of the Lord fills the world: C: Let the righteous rejoice; let them exalt before God. L: The Lord gave the Word: C: Great was the company of those that published it. L: Before God, our heavenly Father, we make confession: C: Gracious Father, each day we sin against You in our thinking by not setting our minds on what is true, noble, and right; by speaking unkind words, not building up others in our speech, by doing the evil we should not do, and omitting the good You want us to do. We have not loved You with our whole heart nor our neighbors as ourselves. For this we humbly ask forgiveness, for the sake of Jesus Christ. Amen. *THE ABSOLUTION *THE GLORIA PATRI (Taken from LSB, page 186) C: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. *THE KYRIE C: Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us.

*THE COLLECT OF THE DAY L: The Lord be with you. C: And with thy spirit. L: Let us pray. THE OLD TESTAMENT READING for the eighth Sunday after Pentecost is from Amos 7:7-15, page 769: (5:00, 8:00 & 10:30) 7 This is what he showed me: behold, the Lord was standing beside a wall built with a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand. 8 And the LORD said to me, Amos, what do you see? And I said, A plumb line. Then the Lord said, Behold, I am setting a plumb line in the midst of my people Israel; I will never again pass by them; 9 the high places of Isaac shall be made desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste, and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword. 10 Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel. The land is not able to bear all his words. 11 For thus Amos has said, Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel must go into exile away from his land. 12 And Amaziah said to Amos, O seer, go, flee away to the land of Judah, and eat bread there, and prophesy there, 13 but never again prophesy at Bethel, for it is the king's sanctuary, and it is a temple of the kingdom. 14 Then Amos answered and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, nor a prophet's son, but I was a herdsman and a dresser of sycamore figs. 15 But the LORD took me from following the flock, and the LORD said to me, Go, prophesy to my people Israel. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. THE EPISTLE READING is from Ephesians 1:3-14, page 976: 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, 8 which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight 9 making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ 10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. 11 In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, 12 so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. 13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory. L: This is the Word of the Lord. *ALLELUIA AND VERSE C: Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. *THE HOLY GOSPEL - according to St. Mark, the sixth chapter, verses 14-29, page 841: C: Glory be to Thee, O Lord. 14 King Herod heard of it, for Jesus' name had become known. Some said, John the Baptist has been raised from the dead. That is why these miraculous powers are at work in him. 15 But others said, He is Elijah. And others said, He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old. 16 But when Herod heard of it, he said, John, whom I beheaded, has been raised. 17 For it was Herod who had sent and seized John and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, because he had married her. 18 For John had been saying to Herod, It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife. 19 And Herodias had a grudge against him and wanted to put him to death. But she could not, 20 for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed, and yet he heard him gladly. 21 But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his nobles and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee. 22 For when Herodias's daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests. And the king said to the girl, Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it to you. 23 And he vowed to her, Whatever you ask me, I will give you, up

to half of my kingdom. 24 And she went out and said to her mother, For what should I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptist. 25 And she came in immediately with haste to the king and asked, saying, I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter. 26 And the king was exceedingly sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests he did not want to break his word to her. 27 And immediately the king sent an executioner with orders to bring John's head. He went and beheaded him in the prison 28 and brought his head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother. 29 When his disciples heard of it, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb. L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise be to Thee, O Christ. *THE CREED (Luther s Explanation of the 3 rd Article) (8:00, 9:20, & 10:30) L: Do you believe in the Holy Spirit? C: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. L: What does this mean? I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith. In the same way He calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith. In this Christian church He daily and richly forgives all my sins and the sins of all believers. On the Last Day He will raise me and all the dead, and give eternal life to me and all believers in Christ. This is most certainly true. Amen. HYMN OF THE DAY Fight the Good Fight LSB 664 1. Fight the good fight With all your might; Christ is your Strength and Christ your right. Lay hold on life, and it shall be Your joy and crown eternally. 2. Run the straight race through God s good grace; Lift up your eyes, and seek His face. Life with its way before us lies; Christ is the path, and Christ the prize. 3. Cast care aside, lean on your guide; His boundless mercy will provide. Trust, and enduring faith shall prove Christ is your life and Christ your love. 4. Faint not nor fear, His arms are near; He changes not who holds you dear; Only believe, and you will see That Christ is all eternally. THE SERMON Tragic Indifference (Matthew 5:10-12) THE OFFERING - During the offering all worshipers are asked to fill out the blue or ivory cards found in the pew rack.
