MEMORIAL TO SAVANT OF AGRA GHARANA Pandit Rama Rao V. Naik The Bhavan is happy to associate itself with the disciples of Pandit Ramarao V. Naik to create an endowment in honour to mark the centenary of his birth. Pandit Rama Rao V. Naik was a legendary Hindustani Classical musician and guru of Bangalore, responsible for bringing Hindustani style to Bangalore, a bastion of Carnatic music. He groomed innumerable disciples in the authentic Agra-Atrauli style BIRTH CENTENARY OF PT. RAMARAO V. NAIK 9 in Bangalore, several of whom have made name and fame the world over. Born in 1909 in a village in Haveri District, Panditji started learning Carnatic music at a young age. But he was deeply attracted to the Hindustani style after listening to the great Ustad Faiyaz Khan. So he decided to go to Baroda and learn the style from Ustad Atta Hussain Khan and Swami Vallabhdas, both distinguished disciples of Ustad Faiyaz Khan. After mastering the aesthetic nuances of the Agra-Atrauli Gharana for 20 years he became a proficient vocalist himself. Ustad Faiyaz Khan was so much impressed by the authentic singing of Panditji that he himself often used to ask Panditji to give vocal support in his concerts. Panditji was equally adept at playing the harmonium and had an uncanny knack of

reproducing complex nuances of the Gharana on the harmonium. Being orthodox and devout, with a rigorous religious routine at home, he avoided going out of Bangalore for concerts. Instead, to earn a livelihood besides Vidya Daan, he regaled both connoisseurs and lay listeners alike, never missing an opportunity to sing Devaranamas at religious gatherings. The competence of a teacher is judged by the number of his / her students who have achieved national and international status. Panditji s students form a truly large galaxy of classical musicians. To name a few, Dr M.R. Gautam, Nandakumar, Lalita Ubhayakar, Lalith J Rao, Meera Savoor, Shantha Jayateertha, and Susheela Mehta the list is endless. Many of them are top grade artistes of the AIR. PANDITJI S STUDENTS FORM A TRULY LARGE GALAXY OF CLASSICAL MUSICIANS. 10 HOST OF DISCIPLES TO HAIL THE MAESTRO Panditji was the recipient of the Prestigious Central Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Sangeet Samrat Tansen Award of the MP Government, Rajyothsava Award, ITC s Sangeet Research Academy Award and Kanaka Purandara Award of Karnataka Government. The endowment will be launched with a day-long programme on Feb 21, at Khincha auditorium under the auspicious of the Bhavan, as under morning session :- 10.00 a.m. Chorus Music by Students & Excerpts from Video coverage of Pt. R.V. Naik s programmes 6.00 p.m. Evening Session Vocal by Ustad Ghulam Hasnain Khan (Raja Miya) accompanied by Sri. Ravindra Yavagal on Tabla and Sri. Vyasmurthy Katti on Harmonium.
