Transcription:

1 Sunday, September 17, 2017-24th Sunday in Ordinary Time REMEMBER THE MERCY...POPE FRANCIS: God s forgiveness knows no limits; it is greater than anything we can imagine, and it comes to all who know in their hearts that they have done wrong and desire to return to him. God looks at the heart that seeks forgiveness. The problem, unfortunately, comes whenever we have to deal with a brother or sister who has even slightly offended us. The reaction described in the parable describes it perfectly: He seized him by the throat and said, Pay what you owe! (Matt 18:28). Here we encounter all the drama of our human relationships. When we are indebted to others, we expect mercy; but when others are indebted to us, we demand justice! All of us do this. It is a reaction unworthy of Christ s disciples, nor is it the sign of a Christian style of life. Jesus teaches us to forgive and to do so limitlessly: I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times (v.22) What he offers us is the Father s love, not our own claims to justice. To trust in the latter alone would not be the sign that we are Christ s disciples who have obtained mercy at the foot of the cross solely by virtue of the love of the Son of God. Let us not forget, then, the harsh saying at the end of the parable: So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart (v.35). Pope Francis, Meditation at Assisi, August 4, 2016 FIESTA 2017 ON ITS LAUNCHING PAD: All systems are go for the 39th annual Fiesta on the weekend of September 29, 30, and October 1. At all Masses last weekend, R.J. Saavedra, our very motivated Fiesta Chair, alerted us to our upcoming annual Fiesta event. An attractive invitational insert will be a part of next week s bulletin outlining the wide range of engaging activities during the Fiesta weekend. The Fiesta each year is a wonderful community gathering of our parish and school and surrounding neighborhood. The planned focus of this annual event is community, fellowship and friendship-sharing. The income from this Fiesta is a blessing in helping some maintenance needs within our parish plant each year. The income from this year s Fiesta will be reserved and designated for the 60th parish anniversary fund. The designated funds will give needed attention to flooring underneath the pews in the church and attention to the pews which are showing significant signs of wear and tear after their 59 years of service. It was indeed a delight and joy for me to participate in the meeting of the Fiesta core committee recently. I found a wonderful spirit of excitement, commitment and loving service alive within this group of thirty of our parishioners. The loving service of almost 300 volunteers becomes the lifeblood of our parish Fiesta. All parishioners are invited in the sharing of some loving service hours in any of our many areas of service during the Fiesta weekend. THE FIESTA WHITE ELEPHANT TEAM NEEDS YOUR HELP: Clean out your closets and garage and donate those no longer needed items to the White Elephant Sale. Starting this weekend you can drop off items under the tent in front of the Parish Hall. Volunteer helping hands contact Laura Stehle at 747-1321. FIESTA TICKETS: Each book consists of 12 tickets. Suggested donation of only $10.00 per book. Suggested donation per ticket is one dollar each. Two tickets in each book are a bonus. If you should want extra books to sell, you may get them from the Parish office. We ask that all unsold books be returned to the Parish office so that we may have the chance to make them available to someone else. Please return the ticket stubs with the money in a separate envelope to the Parish office in advance of the weekend, or you can simply drop the envelope in any Sunday collection. You can also use the OneParish app to make your donation. PRAYING THE SUNDAY SCRIPTURES: On this Monday, September 18th, a session for beginners on praying with the Scriptures or Lectio Divina will be presented in the Daily Chapel at 7pm. This process of prayer is very favored within our Catholic tradition. There will be hand-out materials on how to train oneself on this form of prayer as well as the opportunity to experience the prayer exercise by doing it during the session. God s Word is a great source of power and prayer and I continue to be excited about introducing this Lectio Divina form of prayer to our parishioners. The session will be an hour to an hour and a half.

Christian Education / Formation Scripture Reflection Matthew 18:15-20 How many times shall we forgive? In Sunday s Gospel we hear how forgiving is not easy. Peter clearly has a problem with Jesus message of forgiveness. He tries to find out how much is enough seven times? But Jesus refuses to acknowledge a boundary: Not seven times, I say seventy times seven times. In other words, don t bother counting. No matter how often he forgives, Peter will never be able to say he has forgiven his brother enough. Neither will we. In our personal lives and in our social and economic dealings, we must become perpetually forgiving people. It s hard to let go of what others owe us, hard to give up the sense of being wronged and the desire to be compensated. Like Peter, we want to count. How else can we be sure we won t run out of the love and comfort we need? The parable is about us, not about God. The unforgiving servant s terrible fate is meant to startle us into recognizing how urgent we need to change our treatment of those who offend us. God s reign is coming is indeed already here? There s no time to lose. Hurry up! Show mercy. Forgive your sister, your brother, your co-worker and your neighbor from your heart. Now! ***How does it feel to forgive someone? To be forgiven? Which is harder: To ask forgiveness, accept forgiveness, or grant forgiveness? September Calendar 18 Praying with the Scriptures Lectio Divina 29/30 Parish Fiesta! Tom will facilitate a how to pray with the Scriptures process for beginners at 7pm in the Church meet by Daily Chapel. God s Word is a deep source of prayer and is alive, active, and effective in transforming our lives when we engage in its prayerful reading and meditation leading us to prayer and contemplation. When we set aside quality time to do this with an open and seeking heart, God speaks to us through the power of His Word. These evening sessions for beginners will help participants discover and enjoy the simple, yet powerful beauty of Lectio Divina divine reading of Sacred Scripture. Approximately 90 minutes you only need to attend one session. No fee. Registration with the Parish Office will be appreciated. 2 Pray the Holy Rosary at the Arizona Rosary Celebration Plan to attend the Arizona Rosary Celebration, an annual event in the Diocese of Tucson on Saturday, October 21, 2017, at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church; located at 8650 North Shannon Road, Tucson, AZ 85742 from 10:00am to 12:15pm.
