C Amen. P Gathered in the name of Jesus, let us confess our sin against God and our neighbor. Gracious God, C in Christ Jesus you come among us as light shining in darkness. We confess our failure to welcome this light. Forgive us and renew our hope, so that we may live in the light of your grace, and welcome the truth of Christ the Lord. Amen. Refrain: PRAYER OF THE DAY P Everlasting God, the radiance of all faithful people, you brought the nations to the brightness of your rising. Fill the world with your glory, and show yourself to all the world through him who is the true light and the bright morning star, your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. Special Music: Offering -Seth Tonjes FIRST LESSON: Isaiah 0:- Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD has risen upon you. For darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the LORD will arise upon you, and his glory will appear over you. Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn. Lift up your eyes and look around; they all gather together, they come to you; your sons shall come from far away, and your daughters shall be carried on their nurses' arms. Then you shall see and be radiant; your heart shall thrill and rejoice, because the abundance of the sea shall be brought to you, the wealth of the nations shall come to you.

A multitude of camels shall cover you, the young camels of Midian and Ephah; all those from Sheba shall come. PSALM 7:-7, - Give the king your jus- tice, O God, and your righteousness to the king's son; that he may rule your people righteously and the poor with justice; that the mountains may bring prosperity to the people, and the hills, in righteousness. Let him defend the needy a- mong the people, rescue the poor, and crush the oppressor. May he live as long as the sun and moon endure, from one generation to another. Let him come down like rain upon the mown field, like showers that wa- ter the earth. 7 In his time may the righteous flourish; and let there be an abundance of peace till the moon shall be no more. May the kings of Tarshish and of the isles pay tribute, and the kings of Sheba and Seba offer gifts. May all kings bow down before him, and all the nations do him service. For the king delivers the poor who cry out in distress, the oppressed, and those who have no helper. He has compassion on the low- ly and poor, and preserves the lives of the needy. From oppression and violence he re- deems their lives, and precious is their blood in his sight. They shall bring gold and frankincense, and shall proclaim the praise of the LORD. A C The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God. SECOND LESSON: Ephesians :- This is the reason that I Paul am a prisoner for Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles for surely you have already heard of the commission of God's grace that was given me for you, and how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I wrote above in a few words, a reading of which will enable you to perceive my understanding of the mystery of Christ. In former generations this mystery was not made known to humankind, as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: that is, the Gentiles have become fellow heirs, members of the same body, and sharers in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. 7 Of this gospel I have become a servant according to the gift of God's grace that was *GOSPEL ACCLAMATION To you, O Lord, all glory be For this your blest epiphany; To God whom all his hosts adore, And Holy Spirit evermore. * GOSPEL: Matthew :- (please stand as you are able) In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, "Where is the child who has been born given me by the working of his power. 8 Although I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given to me to bring to the Gentiles the news of the boundless riches 9 of Christ, and to make everyone see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things; so that through the church the wisdom of God in its rich variety might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. This was in accordance with the eternal purpose that he has carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have access to God in boldness and confidence through faith in him. A C The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God. king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage."

When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: 'And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.'" 7 Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact 8 time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, "Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage." 9 When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road. SERMON HYMN WOV # We Three Kings (you may remain seated) * APOSTLES' CREED C I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen TITHES AND OFFERINGS In the Bleak Midwinter OFFERTORY (you may remain seated.) So bring him incense, gold, and myrrh; Come, peasant, king, to own him. The King of kings salvation brings; Let loving hearts enthrone him. Raise, raise the song on high, The virgin sings her lullaby; Joy, joy, for Christ is born, The babe, the son of Mary! CHILDREN S SERMON HYMN What Star Is This What star is this, with beams so bright, more beauteous than the noonday light? It shines to herald forth the King, glad tidings of our God to bring. True spoke the prophet from afar, who told this rise of Jacob s star, And lo! The eastern sages stand, to read in heav n the Lord s command. The guiding star above is bright; within it shines a clearer light And leads them on with pow r benign, to seek the giver of the sign. O Jesus, while the star of grace impels us on to seek your face, Let not our idle hearts refuse, the guidance of your light to use. THE PRAYERS (you may remain seated) A Rejoicing in the good news of Christ's birth and dwelling in hope, let us pray for the church, those in need, and all of creation. A brief silence. A Gracious God, you reveal yourself to the world in your Son, Jesus. Grant your church throughout the world wise servants of the gospel who proclaim this good news in many ways. Lord, in your mercy, A You reveal your goodness through all you have created. Let the beauty of all living things make us yearn to protect the earth and all for whom it contains life. Lord, in your mercy,

A You reveal yourself through generations of faithful people who are now at rest in you. Through their example, lead us to proclaim the gospel with boldness and confidence. Thank you for all the cards and notes for Marcus! Thank you so much for the cards for Marcus! The boxes have been removed, but there is still time to drop a card for him by the church office or give it directly to me. I ll be taking them until Wednesday, January (I ll be here in the evening for choir). -Holly Mohring Flower Chart The new flower chart for 07 is posted on the bulletin in the narthex. Pick your date early and sign up! Caring Corner - January SOAP We hope for a bright, clean start to a brand-new, shiny, sparkling clean New Year, so this month, we ll collect soap any brand, any size for Together We Can Make A Difference Initiatives. We can even use small travel, hotel/motel-size, which we re-package as School kits for kids who shower at school with sports and/or phys ed. Time and Talents Now is the time for all good people to come to the aid of their congregation... (sorry bout that!). If you have not yet filled out a Time and Talent form, PLEASE do so in the next week or two and leave it in the office or place it in the offering plate. (The forms can be found at each entrance.) Church Council is going to be working hard to use all those wonderful people who would like to volunteer for the various activities. We need YOU!!!...and YOU...and YOU...and YOU Can you/will you help our grieving families? Help is needed in ministering to our church members who have lost a loved one. If you would be willing to make a dish or help serve a funeral luncheon, please call or contact Kathy Bostelman at 9-99- or Joan Collier at 9-9- for more information. We will de-decorate the church on Saturday morning beginning at 9 a.m. The more hands and legs and arms and I m-here-to-help attitude we have, the quicker we will get done! Besides...you will have a great time! Thanks!! We are saved by faith alone, but the faith that saves is never alone. Martin Luther Did you know... Early on as a reformer, Luther publicly concluded that penance (the church sacrament involving confession of sin) wasn t a sacrament at all. Yet he continued to daily confess his sins to another person for most of his life. 7 8
