Rooted in Christ Growing in Faith Reaching to Invite and Serve 2 A Few Words From Pastor Feltman Happy summer, y all! I write this on Tuesday, June 20, the summer solstice my favorite day of the year because it is the longest. I m solar powered, so lots of sun and warm weather are good for my soul and my disposition. I pray that you are enjoying the summer as much as I am! This month, I simply want to share with you some random thoughts and announcements. First, an update on Pastor Moser and our pastoral staffing plans. Pastor Jen continues to heal from the devastating loss of her husband, Greg, and to plan for her and her children s future. There is, of course, more work to do in that process, but she is ready to resume her work as one of our pastors. Pastor Jen has asked, and gotten approval from Congregation Council, to return to work on a part-time basis beginning August 1. It will be good to have her back among us! She has been sorely missed! Second, because of Pastor Jen s move to part-time status and the fact that the Youth Ministry Committee has not yet found a youth director to replace Moose Flores when he leaves, we have several holes in our staffing. I ve been working hard with the Council and Youth Ministry Committee to fill those positions, and I think the Spirit has provided us an exciting possibility! Stay tunes for more details. You should be hearing about a proposal very soon. Third, I m really enjoying our summer sermon series What Is a Lutheran, and Why Do I Want to Be One. It has challenged me to re-think some of the things we assume about who we are as Lutherans. Won t you join me each weekend as we explore what it means to be a Lutheran? Fourth, congratulations to Peter Connor, who has earned the rank of Eagle Scout. His Court of Honor will be on July 9 at Bethel United Methodist Church. Kudos also go out to Peter s parents, Brendan Connor and Lisa Kerins, for rearing a great young man! Blessings for a slow and refreshing summer! Pastor Ron Feltman

Rooted in Christ Growing in Faith Reaching to Invite and Serve 3 LYO News July is here and the mission trip is soon upon us! Sunday School Teachers Needed We are in need of additional Sunday School teachers for all grades, kindergarten through 6th grade, for the 2017-2018 school year. Our vision is to have four teachers per grade. Interested but have never taught? That s O.K.! Our curriculum is easy enough for all to present and provides ideas for each lesson. If you re still hesitant, Scott Miller is available to answer questions. Please contact Scott Miller today at Scott.Miller@EpiphanyElmhurst.org or at (630) 207-5746 to add your name to our Sunday School teaching family! Cursive Camp Open to students entering first through fourth grade, learn and practice lower case letters in very unique ways: with music, blindfolds, tactile, and other "fun" methods to master the art of cursive writing. Classes will take place on Sundays in July immediately after the 9:30 a.m. worship service, or on Monday mornings in July at 9:00 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. Class sessions last one hour each with a total of five classes. Rooted in Christ Growing in Faith Reaching to Invite and Serve 5 Check It Out! Have you ever heard an explanation of the Prodigal Son Story that really satisfied you regarding the dutiful son? The "secret deep in the heart of many people, especially Christians: they don't love God. They can't, because the God they've been presented with and taught about can't be loved." When faced with certain facets of God as He is presented in the modern church, most Christians choose not to admit the problem, but wouldn't it be more sensible to think a misunderstanding has occurred? Like Martin Luther observing that divine grace had faded in the church vocabulary, Rob Bell takes a fresh look at the concepts of heaven, hell, and eternity to explain divine love. He is primarily a speaker, and Love Wins: A Book About Heaven, Hell, and the Fate of Every Person Who Ever Lived is essentially a transcript of him speaking. He knows his Bible, speaks clearly, and uses a simple type font. A more verbose endorsement of God can be read in The Confessions of St. Augustine, which can also be checked out for FREE! --Assistant Librarian Teri Epiphany Co-Ed Bowling League Starts in September - New Bowlers Wanted Epiphany s Bowling League completed its most recent season in May, and will begin again in September, providing a weekly night of fun activity and camaraderie for men and women, ages 16 and over. On Thursday evenings beginning after Labor Day, we will gather at Stardust Bowl in Addison. This league is designed for fun, and no matter what your average might be or how long it may have been since you last bowled (if ever!) we guarantee balanced competition and fun for everyone. Teams are formed with a goal in mind of being evenly skilled and having close matches, and close team scores are often the case. We like it best for bowlers to sign up for the full season, which runs until May with a number of holidays taken off during the year. We know that this schedule can be challenging for some people, so if you want to join for half the season, that s O.K., too. The league needs more bowlers, so we re hoping you ll give it a try! If you are interested and/or have questions, please contact Bob Sutherland at (630) 279-1636 or Marty Jensen at (630) 605-6414. NOTE: Returning bowlers should also contact Bob or Marty as soon as possible to confirm and secure your spot in the league!

Rooted in Christ Growing in Faith Reaching to Invite and Serve 6 Summer Reading Book Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger Hosted by: Heather Feltman Date: Monday, August 21, 2017 Time: 7:00-9:00 p.m. Location: The Feltmans, 596 S. Spring Rd, Elmhurst From New York Times bestselling author William Kent Krueger comes a brilliant novel about a young man, a small town, and murder in the summer of 1961. Published in 2013, this book went on to win the Edgar Award for Best Novel in 2014. New Bremen, Minnesota, 1961. The Twins were playing their debut season, ice-cold root beers were at the ready at Halderson s Drug Store soda counter, and Hot Stuff comic books were a mainstay on every barbershop magazine rack. It was a time of innocence and hope for a country with a new, young president. But for thirteen-year-old Frank Drum it was a summer in which death assumed many forms. When tragedy unexpectedly comes to call on his family, which includes his Methodist minister father, his passionate, artistic mother, Juilliard-bound older sister, and wise-beyond-his years kid brother, Frank finds himself thrust into an adult world full of secrets, lies, adultery, and betrayal. On the surface, Ordinary Grace is the story of the murder of a beautiful young woman, a beloved daughter and sister. At heart, it s the story of what that tragedy does to a boy, his family, and ultimately the fabric of the small town in which he lives. Told from Frank s perspective forty years after that fateful summer, it is a moving account of a boy standing at the door of his young manhood, trying to understand a world that seems to be falling apart around him. It is an unforgettable novel about discovering the terrible price of wisdom and the enduring grace of God.
