Full and Active Participation When one reads the documents on the liturgy from the Second Vatican Council, one of the first phrases encountered is that of full and active participation. What does this mean? The literal translation from the original document is full and ACTUAL participation. This simply means that we are one with the action around us. We are not praying the rosary or devotional novenas. We are not texting our date from last night. We are connected with the mystery present. Actual participation also means that we play our role in the liturgy. We do not need to scream every response. We do not need to hold and raise our hands during the Lord s Prayer. While the Church asks us to respond in speech and song, we also are asked to respond by listening and meditating. Singing at Mass and the Four Hymn Sandwich We need to remember that the Church asks us to sing Mass - not sing AT Mass. In a pious effort to get people to participate during the early years of the Novus Ordo Mass, the idea of inserting and singing four songs at Mass arose - the Four Hymn Sandwich. And, as a way of sort of filling in the places in the former Low Mass where waiting occurred (entrance, offertory, communion, exit), the singing of popular hymns during those spaces gradually came into practice. There was nothing wrong with this practice, but it was essentially a concession and not the ideal, the ideal being a sung Mass. Now guess what the church says about the way that music should be approached at a Mass? It says there are three degrees of music and we are to incorporate music in the Mass according to each degree, starting with the first and then adding the second and then adding the third, with each subsequent degree incorporating the prior. Here are the degrees where music is to take place: The following belong to the first degree: (a) In the entrance rites: the greeting of the priest together with the reply of the people; the prayer. (b) In the Liturgy of the Word: the acclamations at the Gospel. (c) In the Eucharistic Liturgy: the prayer over the offerings; the preface with its dialogue and the Sanctus; the final doxology of the Canon, the Lord s prayer with its introduction and embolism; the Pax Domini; the prayer after the Communion; the formulas of dismissal. The following belong to the second degree: (a) the Kyrie, Gloria and Agnus Dei; (b) the Creed; (c) the prayer of the faithful. The following belong to the third degree: (a) the songs at the Entrance and Communion processions; (b) the songs after the Lesson or Epistle; (c) the Alleluia before the Gospel; (d) the song at the Offertory; (e) the readings of Sacred Scripture, unless it seems more suitable to proclaim them without singing. Do you see that? Where are those four hymns? Where is the song at the end of Mass? (Incidentally, the song at the end of Mass is not even given as an option in the Roman Missal.) By golly, those four hymns are all contained in the third and last degree of the music that the Church wants sung at the Mass! For heavens sake, they appear to be the very last in priority. And these four hymns are not even supposed to be included unless the music from the first two degrees have been incorporated. Thus said, this weekend as we sing four hymns at Mass, remember that just singing four hymns at Mass is not the minimum requirement or even the preference. We simply need to sing the Mass. J.R. Daniels

SAVE THESE DATES Sunday, October 21 Holy Apostles Octoberfest St. Albert the Great Downstairs And Friday, October 26 Holy Apostles Trunk or Treat Watch for more info!!!!!!! Dear Parish Family, Grace, peace, patience, and strength to you in Christ Jesus our Lord! Two weeks ago, I had one of the most beautiful conversations with a couple. One of them is dying, and both of them are standing firm as they trust completely in Jesus Christ! It was awe inspiring just to stand in their presence and see the truth pouring out of them! These two parishioners are the saints of our day! They have come to declare with St. Peter from the Gospel today, You are the Christ, and they know beyond a shadow of a doubt that as they are losing their lives for the sake of Jesus, they are finding them in Him. How real is your faith in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? Does your faith in Jesus being alive and walking with you day in and day out impact your everyday life? At the beginning of my sophomore year in college, I remember feeling very lonely. One day I received good news and I immediately got up to tell my friend across the hall all about it. The second I got up, I heard the Lord say to me, Where are you going? I replied, I have to tell someone about this awesome news. He answered, How about me; am I not someone? At that moment, I realized that as much as I had been longing for true and deep friendship with someone else, Jesus had been longing for that same kind of friendship with me. I had been shunning him as I had been shunned. My children, please do not shun our Lord! He is with us every moment and He does not enjoy being ignored any more than you do! Let us not only declare that Jesus is Lord during the Mass, but live out that reality throughout the rest of our week! In Christ, Fr. Here's one for the kids, but adults will love it too. Jonah: A Veggie Tales Movie is a 3D computer animated movie about the Book of Jonah from the Bible. The movie was released in 2002. Playing the characters in this story are Bob the Tomato, Larry the Cucumber and the rest of the stars of the children's series Veggie Tales. If you have never seen an episode of Veggie Tales, do yourself a favor and watch this movie. This movie combines a story from the present day with the story of Jonah from the Old Testament. The themes of both stories are compassion and mercy. The simplistic explanation of what compassion mercy mean are spot on and easy to understand - for both children and adults. One of the best things about this movie is that it is rated G, and is entertaining because of its dialogue and catchy songs. Whatever your favorite genre of music, it is most likely represented in this story with clever lyrics that will help children of all ages to understand that everyone deserves a second chance. One of my friends is a new grandparent and he was pleasantly surprised how much he enjoys the various Veggie Tales episodes, and especially this movie. I joyfully give this movie Five Beards out of Five Beards because children and adults will learn the full story of the Book of Jonah from the Bible from this movie, and be thoroughly entertained as well. September Festival of Praise Healing in the Heart of Christ was the theme of September s Festival of Praise. Fr. Levi opened the evening by saying that the universe is like a grain of sand compared to God. He talked about an illness he suffered with earlier this year where his weakness made him feel helpless and angry. We often try to force our own will instead of relying on God. He said we all need to remember the Serenity Prayer God grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, and Wisdom to know the difference. We are powerless on our own. God gives us everything. During his recent confession, Fr. Levi was cautioned not to judge others, because only God can judge. If we ask God for mercy, we will receive it from Him. He invited us to come to God, entrust our pain to Him, and ask for healing. Peace, love, and truth reside in the heart of Jesus. The Presider and Homilist was Fr. Mike Ackerman. He spoke about casting our worries on Christ who will restore us. He discussed the range of emotions people are currently experiencing relating to the church scandal, the Church Alive changes, changes to mass times, and personal trials. Fr. Mike said that when you can identify the suffering, you can identify the Savior. Where do we go from here? Give your trials to Jesus He ll be with us even when we suffer. Fr. Mike said that suffering builds community more than joy. When we identify with the woundedness of another person, we discover what God s incarnation was all about. He came and learned about human suffering in order to save us. Jesus knows us better than we know ourselves and, as long as He is the center of our lives, we can move on. In order to move forward, we must: 1) Pray lay everything before God, 2) Work for the change you want to see, 3) Keep close to the sacraments especially the Eucharist and Confession, 4) Support those who are trying to make changes. Let the Lord work in your life. Cast your cares on Him and He ll do the rest. The night was enhanced by the excellence of the Praise Band and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Jesus is always there for us and we believe He will do the impossible in our lives. No matter how strong or determined we are, there are times when we must pull our strength from heaven. In October we will once again celebrate the love we have for Jesus and ask that He strengthen our faith. The service includes an inspirational homily, witness talk adoration of the Blessed Sacrament ending with benediction. An open invitation is extended to you to join with us in celebrating the love of Jesus. Father Steve Kresak will be presider and homilist for this service and Marty Muraski will share with us as witness speaker. You are encouraged to visit the Festival of Praise page in the Holy Apostles Parish website. There you will find many pictures and videos of previous services. Our Praise Band Repertoire now includes more than forty beautiful songs and continues to grow monthly. Many of these songs can viewed and listened to on You Tube as performed by the recording artist. Or maybe you know someone who has expressed an interest in becoming Catholic, a disciple of Christ? It is near the time we typically begin R.C.I.A to prepare those interested to receive the Sacraments at Easter Vigil (April 20, 2019). If you feel drawn to the church and would like to attend, contact Deacon Mike at 412-884- 7744 X 206, or by way of email at mbabcock@holyapostlesparish.org. We will begin on Sunday, 7 October, 2018 at 1:00 pm, in the Faith Formation Building. We are looking forward to seeing you there. RCIA TEAM We put out a call for those who might like to be part of an RCIA committee or we prefer to call it an RCIA team. I have had a couple good people contact me and I look forward to working with them. We could use 2 or 3 more to help in this effort. We will have a kick off meeting on: Sunday, 16 Sept. 2018. We will meet at 1:00 PM in the Deacon s office in the Faith Formation Building. So if you have already contacted me, please keep that time slot free. If you are interested but have been hesitating, give me a call at 412-884-7744 X 206. Come and see if it might fit what you would like to do for your Church & neighbor.

THE DEACON S CORNER Deacon s Corner Our Nar-Anon meetings are every Monday. We hope to continue to grow our family and provide support for those who are dealing daily with the insanity of addiction; those who are friends or family members of an addict. As we have stated, these meetings are to provide input to those who are suffering and wish to learn through the experiences live by others. Remember we maintain anonymity. Speak if you want or just listen, but please come. Nar-Anon website: http://www.nar-anon.org Every Monday, 6:30 pm In the St. Albert Chapel area 3198 Schieck St., Baldwin, PA The Immaculate Heart of Mary Prayer Group meets every Friday from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at St. Albert the Great Church. We invite you to join us in prayer for souls in purgatory, our country and for prayers for healing. Join us as we pray the rosary, including stations of the cross. For more information, contact George Owen at 412-884-9179. FALL GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP The death of a loved one and the grief that follows can often be overwhelming. The pain from this loss, and the resultant life changes, may become overpowering for individuals, especially those who are suffering alone in their grief. The Holy Angels Bereavement Ministry will host a 6-week Grief Support Group: Tuesday evenings, beginning September 11th from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the rectory meeting room and continue each Tuesday through October 16th. To register, or for more information about the group, please contact Suzanne Hunter at 412-462-9928. Invite someone to Mass next weekend! Cut out the invita on below To: From: This is a personal and hear elt invita on from me and my family of Holy Apostles Parish to come and join us each weekend at Church. Will you come and pray with us? WE ARE SAVING A SEAT FOR YOU! Big question why are we here? What is our life s purpose? We have all thought about this at some point. I guess we all have a deep need to matter, to make a difference. We want to know that all this isn t for nothing. The truth is, the purpose of our life does not revolve around us. The purpose of our lives revolves around God. We were created to have a personal relationship, for eternity, with Him, for which he gave us His Son, Jesus. That should evoke a sense of awe and respect in your heart towards God. But this cannot happen without a healthy fear of the Lord, a fear that we might displease him in all we do. But today the world, politically and socially, is hanging on by a thread. There is such divisiveness, disrespect, hatred, and violence. Everywhere you look there are protests or riots of some kind. No amount of education, or new laws can fix what is broken. Why? Because as a Nation, we have totally lost the fear of God. Politicians fear public opinion, students fear being unpopular, people fear criticism and accusations of being intolerant. All these are feared more than fearing God. We have lost our fear of the Lord it would seem. We will never fulfill the purpose for which we were created until we rediscover our fear of the Lord. Ecclesiastes 12:13 says, fear God and obey his commandments, for this is the entire duty of man. For God will judge us for everything we do, including every hidden thing, good or bad. When we humbly obey Him, he can then use us, fulfilling the purpose for which we have been created.
