KNIGHTLY NOTES PAGE 7 COUNCIL RECOGNITION ************************************************************************** Council 10442 is proud to honor: ************************************************************************************************************************************************ KNIGHT OF THE MONTH- October 2018 Knight of the Month for October 2018 is Lamar Johnson. Lamar is being honored for his constant support of the Council activities. He is there whenever he can, and is a common sight at Council dinners and Pancake breakfasts. He sees what needs to be done and does it. Lamar was our Knight of the Year last fraternal year as well. He is an usher for the Parish and is always working hard up at the Church. The Council truly appreciates this hardworking Brother and all he does. Thank you Lamar!!!!! **************************************************************************************************************** FAMILY OF THE MONTH- October 2018 Steve and Ginny Corkins Our Family of the Month for October 2018 is Steve and Ginny Corkins. Steve has been a constant help and source of strength to the Council for years now, helping with the annual Golf Outing and helping with the bar at Council dinners for years. Steve, as all of you are aware, has been having to deal with some health issues cancer in fact. But he and Ginny never lost their faith and are very thankful for all your prayers. Steve recently received the news that he is right now cancer-free and they are both very grateful and thank everyone for their prayers. These two are an example of working together as a family through good and bad times, with their faith and prayer keeping them going. Thank you to this Family of the Month for the example and reminder. ********************************************************************************** Welcome New Brothers! Council would like to welcome two new Brothers who made their First Degree Exemplification on Saturday, Oct 27, 2018. Please congratulate Brother John Goyak and Brother Nicholas Gaber. Prayerfully Consider Our Council is in urgent need of two Brothers interested in learning and assuming some of the cooking and kitchen management responsibilities for our events. If you have cooking experience, or just have an interest in learning more about cooking, this is an opportunity for you to serve us and your Parish. You will work alongside our current cook and learn our systems with the intent that you would assist with food planning, food purchasing, food prep, and health code compliance. The long term plan would be that you would alternate with the others and take over an event and make it your own. Last update was that Brother Danny Iliscupidez has stepped up and become a regular great helper in the prep/cooking part of the kitchen, which we totally appreciate. Chuck is having some physical issues and it is hard for him to do all of this right now. So we still need someone to learn/assist/backup PGK Chuck in the buying of the supplies and getting them to the kitchen. Most are purchases at either Restaurant Depot or Smart and Final, or wherever has the bes t prices at the time of what we need for the Breakfast/Dinner in question. We also are in desperate need of Knights to help each dinner in Transporting items to and from the Shed. As you can see, the scope and breadth of our activities has gotten way too much for one individual to manage. Please prayerfully consider serving the Knights in this capacity. Contact GK Ray Foster, at 702-287-6725. ************************************************************************************

KNIGHTLY NOTES PAGE 10 LADIES AUXILIARY NEWS Knights of Columbus St. Joseph, Husband of Mary Ladies Auxiliary Council #10442 Greetings Ladies! At the opening of the meeting this month a special recognition was given to two of our long time guests. These ladies are so active and contribute so much to our many Auxiliary and Council activities. Anita Palladino-Durazo and Ann Young were called forward and were offered thanks, blessings and awarded a special angel as a small gift of appreciation. The Inspirational Gift Shoppee opened on Sep. 29 th in the St.Francis/Clare rooms with a bang! Parishioners came pouring in and really enjoyed the layout and improved assortment. Fr. Marc remarked that he really thought it looked very nice as well. The set-up crew met at 1pm on Saturday and worked through a new layout featuring this months promotion of Catholic wedding items as well as various designated display areas. Using individual tables really allowed shoppers to move around and view items much more leisurely. Our Lead ladies, Ann and Becki, assisted shoppers with checkout, packaging and fielded many inquiries at the customer service table. This interaction really gave a wonderful sense of community and connection with our parishioners. As a result this month proved to be one of our best for sales and gives hope for our continuing future of service to our parish and charities. Unfortunately, pictures of the ladies who worked on set-up day didn t turn out but next month I will definitely have pics of ladies!!!! Ann Young reported on the Country Western BBQ good attendance and lots of help as reported last month. KNIGHTLY NOTES PAGE 11 LADIES AUXILIARY NEWS pg2 The Mini-Bundt Cake sale item tabled from September meeting was brought back for discussion. New guest member, Barbara Booth, volunteered to chair this event. Anita Palladino-Durazo and Ann Young also volunteered to co-chair. The first sale is scheduled for November 17 & 18. The ladies will have all the info at the business meeting on November 8 th. This has proven to be a very good fundraiser and should be a fast paced fun weekend. Ladies let s get behind this sale to increase our charity fund. We will be making charitable donation decisions at the December meeting so this could really boost the amounts we can give this year. On another note, Sandy D Agostino had raised the point at the close of the September meeting about the need for a Sunshine committee which we had in years past. The focus of this committee would be to provide meals for members and their families following surgery recovery or the loss of a family member. One of our new members, Nenita Daquipa, volunteered to chair this committee. This outreach to our members can be very important expression of care and sisterhood. Next up... Reminding you all that our November business meeting will be on the 8 th not the 1 st. the Knights will be having a potluck beginning at 6:00pm. They are inviting everyone to bring a side dish to share. Our meeting will begin at 6:30 so I plan on running our Pony Derby again at the end of the meeting. Race fans can purchase $1 tickets to place a bet on their favorite horse! Prizes will be the total bank split between those who bet on the winning horse. Time permitting we could run up to three races. Looking forward to seeing you all! KNIGHTLY NOTES PAGE 12 Knights and Ladies Memorial Plaques Knights of Columbus Memorial Plaques are again displayed in the church! They were recovered, restored and returned to order and are now hanging in the church again. Thanks to Mike LaRiccia for taking the lead in getting them displayed again. Chris Shank, From Desert Winds Engraving, does an amazing job on the Knights and also the Ladies Plaques and he does it all for free! Chris humbly says, With all the charity and good works the Knights do, this is the least I can do. Mike and Nick Ciccone presented Chris with a Certificate of Appreciation and a $100 gift certificate in appreciation. Also pictured here are the plaques honorably displayed on the wall in the church. The Ladies Plaque also needed some restoration and tender loving care, so it has just been restored. The Knights and the Ladies plaques will be presented at the altar at the Nov 2 All Soul s Day mass at 7pm. All are invited to attend and honor the memory of our deceased Brothers and Sisters. *********************************************************************************************** Editor s Note Wanted to wish everyone a blessed, peaceful, healthy, and grateful Thanksgiving! KNIGHTLY NOTES PAGE 13 Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William E. Lori THE WITNESS OF ST. JOHN VIANNEY ENCOURAGES US TO GROW IN HOLINESS, FIDELITY AND LOVE THE ANNUAL Supreme Convention always concludes with the holy sacrifice of the Mass offered for fellow Knights, families and loved ones who died during the past fraternal year. Present at that Mass are relics of saints who are near and dear to the Knights of Columbus. This year, for example, we venerated St. John Paul II, our beloved K of C Mexican Martyrs and St. Edith Stein. We also venerated the relics of two saints who are part of the history of the Archdiocese of Baltimore: St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, the first native born citizen of the United States to be canonized; and St. John Neumann, who was ordained a bishop in 1852 at St. Alphonsus Church in downtown Baltimore. One particular relic we venerated during this year s convention touched me very deeply. It was the heart of St. John Vianney, the patron of priests. Vianney was born in 1786 in Dardilly, France, to parents who were poor but devout. In their home, the seeds of a priestly vocation were planted in their son s heart, but his path to the priesthood was arduous as he struggled with his studies. Ordained to the priesthood in 1815, Vianney was soon appointed pastor of a parish in the remote village of Ars. Arriving there, he found that the faith was all but dead among the villagers. Father Vianney s priestly heart, however, burned with love for Jesus and for the people he was sent to serve. This priest, whose talents were regarded as mediocre, brought the parish at Ars back to life by bringing many of his parishioners back to the practice of the faith. He did so not by strategic planning, but rather by the force of his integrity and holiness, the fruit of his daily prayer centered on the Blessed Sacrament, his practice of self-mortification, his untiring love for his parishioners, his long hours in the confessional, and his confrontation with evil. Soon, his remote parish began to attract people from all over France and even from other parts of Europe. It was an unlikely place to become a center for reevangelization and renewal, but God, in his providence, raised up a good and holy shepherd to lead the way. St. John Vianney, who had not been regarded as promising by his superiors, set a very high standard for every bishop and priest. Gazing upon his priestly heart, I was deeply moved. I was filled with gratitude and hope. I also could not help but think of how the Church s mission of evangelization is harmed when her bishops and priests are mired in infidelity either personal misconduct or failures of leadership. By contrast, when in God s grace a shepherd strives, like St. John Vianney, for authentic goodness and holiness, what a difference it makes. The faith is true, good and salvific but it becomes credible when preached and borne witness to by shepherds whose deeds bear the marks of integrity, by shepherds who are firmly on the road to holiness, by shepherds who are filled with pastoral love. In these days when the misdeeds of shepherds are so painfully evident, may I say a word of encouragement and thanks to you, the family of the Knights of Columbus? Your love of the faith, your practice of the principle of charity, and your support for the Church s bishops and priests are a great gift. You help us live the vocation God has given us. As supreme chaplain of the Knights, I have experienced this time and again. Thank you. And please do pray for me, for your chaplains, and for all members of the clergy. Pray that we might have in us a priestly heart, like that of St. John Vianney that is to say, a heart like unto that of Christ. kofc.org
