In the Orthodox Church, reception of the Holy Eucharist is reserved for baptized, chrismated Orthodox Christians who have prepared by prayer, fasting and a recent confession. If you are visiting from a non-orthodox church or otherwise are not prepared to commune today, you are welcome to receive some of the unconsecrated, blessed bread which the acolytes are holding. We pray for all to be united in the Body and Blood of Christ! If you would like to learn how you can enter into communion with the Orthodox Church, please speak with our clergy.

THE EPISTLE (For the Twenty-second Sunday after Pentecost) V Thou, O Lord, shalt preserve us and keep us from this generation. Save me, O Lord, for the godly man hath disappeared. The Reading from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Galatians. (6:11-18) Brethren, see with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand. It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh that would compel you to be circumcised and only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. For even those who receive circumcision do not themselves keep the Law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may glory in your flesh. But far be it from me to glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me and I to the world. For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. Peace and mercy be upon all, who walk by this rule, upon the Israel of God. Henceforth let no man trouble me; for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brethren. Amen. THE GOSPEL (For the Seventh Sunday of Luke) The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (8:41-56) At that time, there came to Jesus a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue; and falling at Jesus feet he besought Him to come to his house, for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. As Jesus went, the people pressed round Him. And a woman, who had had a flow of blood for twelve years, and had spent all her living upon physicians, and could not be healed by anyone, came up behind Him, and touched the fringe of His garment; and immediately her flow of blood ceased. And Jesus said, Who was it that touched Me? When all denied it, Peter said, Master, the multitudes surround Thee and press upon Thee! And Thou sayest, Who touched Me? But Jesus said, Someone touched Me; for I perceive that power has gone forth from Me. And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before Him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched Him, and how she had been immediately healed. And Jesus said to her, Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace. While Jesus was still speaking, a man from the ruler s house came and said, Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any more. But Jesus on hearing this answered him, Do not fear; only believe, and she shall be well. And when Jesus came to the house, He permitted no one to enter with Him, except Peter and James and John, and the father and mother of the child. And all were weeping and bewailing her; but Jesus said, Do not weep; for she is not dead but sleeping. And they laughed at him, THE GOSPEL (CONTINUED) knowing that she was dead. But taking her by the hand Jesus called, saying, Child, arise. And her spirit returned, and she got up at once; and Jesus directed that something should be given her to eat. And her parents were amazed; but He charged them to tell no one what had happened. SAINTS & FEASTS OF THE DAY Twenty-second Sunday after Pentecost & Seventh Sunday of Luke; Martyrs Terence and Neonilla and their children; Venerable Bishop Stephen of Mar Sabbas monastery in Palestine; Athanasios I, patriarch of Constantinople; Venerable Job of Pochaev GOOD WORKS BASKET October Project Mat Su Food Bank World Food Day was Oct. 16. With this in mind, the Archdiocese asks all parishes to collect non-perishable food from October through December. Our October GWB project will be for the Mat-Su Food Bank. Please make donations of non-perishable food items in the green bin in the Fellowship Hall. Last year we collected 300 pounds of food. In addition, November and December projects will focus on our Adopt-afamily project through the Wasilla Homeless Committee. A GOOD WORD Send your treasures to the heavenly storage room. Deposit your wealth in God s Bank, distributing it to the poor, the orphans and the widows, so that you can receive a million times more in the Second Coming of Christ. -- Elder Joseph the Hesychast Even the doing of what is good requires discrimination...for the good is not good unless its purpose is conformed to God's will. -- St. Peter of Damascus If you are making something, you must call to mind the Creator of all things; if you see the light, remember the Giver of it. If you put on your clothes, recall whose gift they are and thank Him who provides for your life. In short, let every action be a cause of your remembering and praising God, and lo! you will be praying without ceasing and therein your soul will always rejoice. -- St. Peter of Damascus It is better to be a simpleton and approach God with love than to be a learned man and at the same time an enemy of God. -- St. Irenaeus of Lyons

SAINT HERMAN ANTIOCHIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH 6988 N. En Dove Road; Wasilla AK 99654 Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America Diocese of Los Angeles and the West His Eminence Metropolitan JOSEPH, Primate Rev. Fr. Matthew Howell, Pastor priest@sainthermanwasilla.org - (907)373-5254 www.sainthermanwasilla.org Greetings in Christ to all Parishioners and Friends of Saint Herman Antiochian Orthodox Church. The Parish Council would like to update all the members and friends of Saint Herman Antiochian Orthodox Church in Wasilla on the exciting developments happening at our church. We are growing! We are so thankful to God that we are growing. Not only are we growing but Metropolitan JOSEPH observed during his recent visit in May that our parish is full of joy. He encouraged us to keep our joyful mind and hearts as we grow to never lose the joy, no matter how big a parish we become. Part of the joy that we experience involves our charitable giving through our Good Works Basket. In the past year we have done projects to support the Mat-Su Food Bank, Wasilla Homeless Committee, local Orthodox Prison Ministry, Saint Nicholas Uganda Children s Fund, Wasilla Heartreach Center, FOCUS North America, and International Orthodox Christian Charities. Each month we also continue to support financially both the St. John the Forerunner Monastery in Washington and the Hogar Raphael Orphanage in Guatemala. Our Sunday School classes for all ages held after Coffee Hour are well attended. We are using the Parsonage basement for the children s classes and the Fellowship Hall for classes too. This semester the classes are bursting at the seams! If you haven t attended these classes, please Come and See what good is happening there. After much discussion in the Parish Council and meetings of the whole church, we are embarking on a fundraising venture to pay for God s plan for a new church building. We are unsure how this should be accomplished, so we are praying. Every Wednesday night we have a prayer service focused solely on praying for God s will and direction for the church building plans. It is a short, 20 minute service that begins at 6:00 p.m. We encourage everyone to Come and Pray with us. We are filling our small temple with people of all ages and it is a wonderful problem to solve with God s guidance. If you haven t visited for awhile, we invite you to Come and See! We average more than 75 people on Sunday mornings, and about half are children. We are asking everyone to pray about giving a regular gift to our building fund so we may realize our dream of a sanctuary that safely and comfortably accommodates 150 to 200 people.

We are also planning some community events to help to raise money to build. Stay tuned for announcements on these upcoming fun events. We currently owe about $70,000 on our property mortgage. We would like to retire this debt as soon as possible. We also want to simultaneously save as much money as possible in a building fund so that we will be ready to build, buy, or renovate when God reveals His plan to us. By the way, we now have the capability of scheduling tithes and building fund donations on our website with PayPal. Go to www.sainthermanwasilla.org and click the Donate Now button on the side. Credit cards can be charged through PayPal. It is an easy process and can be done for a one-time donation or monthly or weekly recurring donations whatever suits your giving pattern. Do you remember the story where Jesus fed the multitudes? (John 6:1-14 and Luke 9:10-17). Jesus asked his disciples, Where shall we buy bread, that these may eat? Philip said it would take 200 denarii (200 days of wages) to feed them all just a little bit. In Luke s Gospel Christ commands, You give them something to eat. He said this to test them. Well, you know the story: One person offered all he had. Jesus took and blessed the five barley loaves and two fish. This small amount provided by one young man fed the multitude with twelve baskets of food leftover. Our Lord would love to bless our offerings and feed our souls even more than our bellies! Let us give what we can, regularly give, and watch Him bless our giving of alms. Please talk to anyone on the Parish Council or Father Matthew about ideas you might have or any comments on this matter. Come and See how God will bless your Giving and your Life with Joy. See you Sunday, Parish Council Rev. Fr. Matthew Howell Bob Feldman, Vice-Chair Jennifer Miller Rev. Dn. Thomas Ross Janice Vance, Treasurer Peter Johnson Kosta Bunde, Chairman Becky Moore, Secretary
