Recently one of the parish Worship commissions watched a video about all saints day. take some time this week to watch it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6qcbnhczkc&vl=en), or find a book about the lives of the saints that you might want to read for your spiritual growth. Please remember that the feast of all saints is a holy day of obligation. We will have masses in our region on nov. 1 at st. cecilia at 9:00 am, 12:10 Pm, and 5:30 Pm and at st. margaret-st. John at 11:45 am. amen? amen! statewide day of adoration for vocations will be Wednesday, november 7, 2018. news & notes 5 a commitment to stewardship How shall I make a return to the Lord for all the good He has done for me? - Ps. 116:12 it s about PRayeR. as stewards, we set aside time each day to pray time to listen to god and hear exactly what it is that the lord calls each of us to do, whether it be in individual prayer or prayer with others, as a family or as a parish community. it s about MiniStRy. as stewards, we nurture all we have been given so that it yields its increase. god has given us so many abilities and talents. together, by giving freely of our time and talent, we can make our world, our parish, our community, our home a wonderful showcase of god s love. it s about FinanCe. as good stewards, we thank god by returning a portion of his gifts through our financial giving. only we know how much god has given us. only we know how grateful we are. only we know how much we can give responsibly. but god does repeatedly ask us to give from our abundance to give of our first fruits. it s about COMMitMent. at the end of time, we will only have the things we gave away. everything we kept, we will no longer be able to keep. our lives are a process of giving and sharing. at the end of time, we will be happy about everything we ever gave away and be rewarded as good and faithful stewards. A Message from Our Pastoral Intern hello, i am louie Jacquemin. i am a seminarian studying to be a priest of the archdiocese of cincinnati, and i am in my Pastoral internship year, which means that i have three more years until, god willing, i will be ordained a priest. i am the son of lou and connie Jacquemin, and nephew of fr. george Jacquemin, a former pastor at st. anthony. i am also the great nephew of fr. John Jacquemin (once the procurator of st. gregory seminary), so there is a history of Jacquemins who have served as priests of this archdiocese! i also have a sister who is a religious. her name is sr. Jeanne-marie of the cross. she is a carmelite nun in fairfield, Pennsylvania, and she will be making her profession of solemn vows this november. originally from east of hamilton, ohio, i grew up working alongside my hardworking father on the family farm. my very generous mother homeschooled my brother, four sisters, and me, kindergraten through high school. i went to cincinnati state technical school to study aviation maintenance, after which i worked in that field for several years before beginning my studies for the priesthood at the Pontifical college Josephinum seminary in columbus, ohio. upon completion of my studies there, i applied to mount st. mary s seminary of the West to study theology, and have been there for two years now. seminary is very much like living in a large family with lots of brothers. i am grateful to serve the parishes in this region, and i look forward to getting to know and to pray with the parishioners. Annual St. Margaret-St. John Turkey Dinner Sunday, Nov. 11, from 3-7 PM the dinner cost will be $9.00 for an adult and $5.00 for a child. volunteers needed!please join us on nov. 10, anytime from 8 am until noon, to help set up and cook the dinner for our annual turkey dinner on nov. 11. it s a wonderful way to meet people spending the morning talking and laughing while... peeling potatoes, getting cranberry sauce ready, setting up the cafeteria and other tasks for making this delicious dinner happen. We need many hands to make the work load lighter. Please contact mary mathers with any questions at marymathers@fuse.net or 513-271-0856. e a s t s i d e fa i t h 6 He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble his way. Psalm 25:9 Deacons at Mass: Communion and Concluding Rites (Part 10 of 10) Catholic Saint of the Week Marie Frances therese Martin (st. therese of lisieux, 1873-1897) entered the carmel of lisieux in 1889 at the age of 15. her motto came from the well-known words of st. John of the cross: love is repaid by love alone. her autobiography The Story of a Soul, describes in child-like simplicity her practical way to live a holy life in a commonplace world. st. therese left us personal notes, observations, and insights jotted down on the way to sanctity. she calls it the little Way, by which she means doing everything and suffering everything with an awareness of god s presence. she could see nothing outstanding about herself but understood she was precious in god s sight. for the final 18 months of her life, she experienced an agonizingly slow and painful death, using it as another opportunity for acceptance and living in the spirit of love. during the kiss of peace, it is the deacon s role to invite all present to participate, let us offer each other a sign of peace. as an ordinary minister of holy communion, during the singing of the lamb of god, the deacon assists the priest in preparing the vessels for distribution. the deacon then receives communion from the priest and then helps minister communion to any extraordinary ministers. during the communion procession, the deacon often ministers the blood of christ if communion is distributed under both kinds. after communion, the deacon reposes any remaining hosts in the tabernacle. at the end of mass, if there is a solemn blessing, the deacon invites all to bow your heads and to pray for god s blessing. after the blessing, the deacon dismisses the people. the priest and deacon reverence the altar with a kiss. the deacon walks to the right of the priest during the recessional (symbolizing his ancient role as the bishop s right hand man, which is a traditional etymology of that phrase). Nathan Beiersdorfer is in formation to be ordained a permanent deacon at St Cecilia parish. hearing god s voice amidst the noise and busy-ness of our lives can be difficult. but he is always there to guide and help us, and he has given us other people and resources to help us, as well. if you think god may be calling you to religious life and you need someone to talk to, call fr. dan schmitmeyer at 421.3131, ext. 2890. focus on J ustice 7 it is in the eucharist that all that has been created finds its greatest exaltation. grace, which tends to manifest itself tangibly, found unsurpassable expression when god himself became man and gave himself as food for his creatures. the lord, in the culmination of the mystery of the incarnation, chose to reach our intimate depths through a fragment of matter. he comes not from above, but from within, he comes that we might find him in this world of ours. Pope Francis, Laudato Si st. francis Pledge tolton: from slave to Priest october s st. francis feast day prompts us once again to reflect on how we care for the earth. st. francis s love and care for creation challenges us today, as we begin to see the grave effects of climate change. mindful of those who are already directly suffering from fires and floods, and aware of the need to protect the earth for those who succeed us, let us be firm in our response to this sign of the times. take the st. francis pledge to pray, live, and advocate laudato si. visit www.catholicclimatecovenant.org for more info. this saint luke production is presented as a part of national black catholic month series. there are four productions in the greater cincinnati area, but the only one that requires tickets is the university of dayton on november 4, 2018. each venue will have limited seating [250 maximum]. We will kick the month off next sunday, november 4, when we welcome deacon dan thomas as our guest homilist at both st. anthony masses. in between the liturgies, we will enjoy a Front Porch Chat with Jessie thomas. longtime parishioners may remember front Porch chats, an informal conversation with an african american member of the parish about his/her experience as a black catholic. the chat will take place in the parish center between masses. evening Prayer on tuesday, october 30, at 7 Pm, we will have evening prayer at st. anthony. our intention for this month s prayer will be those who live with mental illness, along with those who love them and those who provide care for them. meac donations don t forget that the first sunday of the month is the day when we ask you to bring donations for meac. items most needed are cereal, canned fruit (mandarin oranges and pineapple), canned tuna, canned salmon, canned chicken, spam, canned or powdered milk, deodorant, shampoo, body soap, feminine hygiene products, razors, toilet paper, paper towels, facial tissue, laundry detergent, dish detergent. st. anthony fall cleanup on november 11 the st. anthony buildings & grounds committee plans to clean up the parish grounds in preparation for winter. if you have some time between 9 am and 4 Pm that day and are willing to help, please sign up on the sheet in the back of church. the final day of the fall cleanup is saturday, december 8. all are invited to a Mass of Remembrance on friday, nov. 2, at st. margaret-st.
