Life is better and faith can be made stronger when we live in community. First there was Footprints. Then came Twonie Lunch when folks from neighbouring churches came for lunch. Donna and Eric Simpson hosted Open Doors here at St. Andrew s in the fall when they welcomed visitors into our church sanctuary. The Fellowship Committee carried on with a community breakfast. Each month folks from other faith communities come eat breakfast and stay to chat. It s easier to seat people now as people are recognizing one another. Our breakfasts are gaining a reputation for a fun place for Saturday morning breakfast. Folks are remaining longer and the laughter is beginning to break the silence. People are becoming comfortable here with us. We have proven ourselves good at welcoming others into our church and now it s our turn to support the social activities going on in our sister churches. To this end the Beacon will extend to our sister churches an invitation to promote their social events in the Beacon. Our goal is to become the Presbyterians that enter every Port Credit church as if we re entering the home of a much loved family member. Who can deny, the more comfortable we become with folks of other denominations, the better the church looks.

dog. Well, Mutt, unless you have a bag of gold hidden somewhere, we are poor. 8:00 am by EVERETT BRIDGES Man's Best Friend, and Then Some 7:00 am I can hear the rain on the thin top of my cardboard box. It's my current home hidden in the alley behind a Chinese restaurant. Time to get up and start another day of failure. What is that whimpering? Who in their right mind would leave a puppy outside my box with a sign, Take Care of Me? I can't even take care of myself so how can I take care of a dog? Hey mutt. What are you doing here? Come in before you get drenched. Why is your paw so tender? Let's have a look. It's a thorn. Let me pull it out. There, I bet that feels better. For lack of a better name, you shall be called Mutt. You can call me Harvey. I remembered what my father had said when I was young. You are never poor if you have a Okay Mutt, I am off to the bus station to get cleaned up, No one questions the use of their washroom. Here, jump into the pocket of this coat and come along. We will pass the bakery and they always have a few discarded pastries in the garbage. Great, a half eaten bran muffin. Nothing like helping along that colon. Have a bite. Watch the fingers Mutt. Okay, okay, you can have more. 9:00 am That feels so good to get some soap and warm water on my face. Let me wash off that paw, then I'll run some cold water. You must be thirsty. Your fur is a bit matted. Hold still and let me try and get the knots out. That's better. I just realized you are a female. I guess I should call you Miss Mutt. You're a pretty good looking dog. 10:30 am Time for breakfast Miss Mutt. It's Sunday which means that the restaurant garbage cans will be full of food that has been cleaned off of Saturday night's dinner plates. Jackpot, there's half a steak and a good size serving of potato. Let's go over to the park bench and share. 1:00 pm Well, Miss Mutt, it's great to have a full

stomach, eh? I think it's time for a nap. Crawl inside my coat and we can nod off. I'll keep you warm Miss Mutt. 3:00 pm That was a nice snooze. Miss Mutt, look at that girl playing fetch with her dog. Here's a stick. Let's try fetch. You're pretty good Miss Mutt. Yes, you can go and have a good play with your canine pals. Nice to have a friend or two. I'll be here as I have nothing on my social calendar today. 5:00 pm We should be thinking about dinner. We can't leave it too late because we need to get back to my box before another squatter moves in. Let's try the drop in centre. They often serve an all day meal on Sundays. You be quiet in my coat and we'll both have some hot food. I'll take the milk carton in my pocket so you have something to drink when we get back to the box. 7:00 pm We just made it Miss Mutt. It's starting to rain. How's the paw? Not as sore now, good. How about some of the milk. You're thirsty. Here have some more. I also took a few cookies from the drop in centre. Have a bite. Okay, you can have the whole thing. Nice to relax and listen to the rain. I have a book I found last week. It's called The Other End of the Leash. I'll read it out loud. We'll both enjoy it. 10:30 pm Hey Miss Mutt, you sure eat and sleep a lot. Yes, you can stay in my coat for the night. I'm not sure we shouldn't stay together. We'll talk about it tomorrow. Kiss good night. 7:00 am Where am I? Why am I wearing these silk pajamas? Why am I in a bed, a bed with sheets and a pillow? What is that smell? Fresh coffee! Oh no, I died and I'm in heaven. Wait, what is that note on the pillow beside me. Harvey, it only takes small acts of kindness to reap a lifetime of happiness. Enjoy the rest of your life in luxury. Signed Miss Mutt, better known as Magic Puppy.

Alan Fyfe, Chair Board of Managers. While the future of St Andrew s Memorial Presbyterian Church has been mentioned at previous annual meetings of the congregation, the subject has not yet received serious consideration at 24 Stavebank Road North, Port Credit. Various influences have been identified as causing the unprecedented world-wide decline in membership of the Presbyterian Church. The basic facts are not in dispute : The (Presbyterian) Church of Scotland is closing and selling its assets as fast as it can. For example, six of the seven Presbyterian churches which were within 10 minutes walking distance when I lived in Glasgow forty years ago, have been sold : some were converted for other purposes and some were demolished. The Church of Scotland website lists dozens of properties for sale. Membership of the Presbyterian Church in Canada as been in straight-line decline for more than 50 years. Reasonable extrapolation of the data indicates that within twenty-five years there will be an insufficient number of Presbyterians to form a traditional congregation anywhere in Canada. Sources : a. The Presbyterian Record, May 2016, Pages 11-13. b. The Economist : 13 August 2016, Page 41. The Board of Managers is planning to initiate informed discussion concerning the above situation as it affects St Andrew s Memorial Presbyterian Church. The congregation will be kept fully informed. Bible Study and Prayer or Prayer and Bible Study I pondered what to write for Bible Study and Prayer then pondered some more. I pondered what to write for each one individually. Suddenly my thoughts were mixing the two together. (Not surprising if you know me) I realized that lessons learned in one place often influence life elsewhere. There are not always nice little boxes and compartments In our Bible Study as we went through the first session of the DVD we realized how deep and life influencing the book of Philippians is. A number of us commented that we could all watch the first session again and get more out of it. We all find that life can be messy and full of challenges. As we meet each challenge in our every day lives do we ask the following questions? Have I prayed about this? Have I praised God? Have I passionately pursued God and drawn close to Him in prayer? Did I seek His wisdom, direction, and guidance? What does this have to do with our Sunday Morning Prayer Group? We pray together for the challenges of our church and its members We invite one and all to join with us as we gather together on Sunday mornings at 9:45 in the boardroom any time you wish. We also challenge you to join us in prayer individually at home. Let us together remember our church family and it s many challenges that it faces day by day! Our current Bible Study is based on a DVD by Karol Ladd called A Woman s Passionate Pursuit of God. Our final session should be on March 23. You are always welcome to join us at 10:00 on Thursday mornings in the Heather Room. Ida.

The Youth Group started off our year with our first meeting in February, coming up with ideas for fundraising, creating a coat of arms. Though our group is small, we brainstormed many good ideas we hope to turn into realities this year. Not to mention getting together is always good fellowship. So, look out for our next venture! If you know of any youth who might benefit from having the support of other youth and church family, please contact either Darlene or Denise. We would be happy to welcome any newcomers! Our next meeting will be held at the end of March. Check our website for dates! Together, all things are possible through God! Blessings, Denise and Darlene
