As we celebrate All Souls Day this Friday, November 2nd, it s not too late to include deceased family members and friends in our Novena of Masses beginning that day. On the special envelopes available in the vestibules of both Churches, simply write the names of those you wish to be remembered in the Novena of Masses and place them in the collection basket. The Blessed Sacrament will be placed on the altar in the monstrance after the 9:00 A.M. Mass on Friday, November 2nd, where it will be on the altar for adoration until 12:00 p.m., at which time there will be Benediction. We ask parishioners to stop by and spend time before the Body of our Lord to demonstrate our devotion to him. SUNG REQUIEM MASS You are invited to support the Parish by attending a special Mass on November 20th at 7:30 p.m. here at St. Columbanus. November is the month of All Souls. To celebrate this monthly remembrance, the Metropolitan Catholic Chorale will sing a Requiem Mass praying for the parish s beloved dead. Please come support the Church by your presence, and prayers, at this beautiful Mass. Come pray the rosary with us the first Saturday of every month. We start at 8:00 a.m. in St. Columbanus Church and read a short explanation of the mysteries. Mass begins at 8:30 a.m. followed by novena prayers. All are welcome. Thank you to all who generously donated blood during last Sunday s Blood Drive. Your generosity saves lives. A monthly Northern Westchester Young Adult Mass will be held every 2nd Tuesday of the month at St. Augustine s in Ossining. Our Mass will be at 7:00 p.m. with confessions available at 6:30 p.m. and a social to follow the Mass. We will be having a different priest each month celebrate the Mass. The Priests and Deacon of our Parish are pleased to take the sacrament of Holy Communion to those unable to attend Mass. October 28, 2018 ST. COLUMBANUS CHURCH #481/PAGE 4 October 28, 2018 ~PASTOR S NOTES~ The archdiocese has sent an information sheet giving a brief overview of the Archdiocese of New York s response to the sexual abuse of minors and vulnerable adults. It is available at the church entranceways. The month of November begins in a few days. It is the month of All Souls when we especially pray for our departed loved ones. Those who use envelopes should have received one for the Holy Souls. We have placed envelopes at the entrances and exits of the church. We can also remember our faithful departed throughout the year by having Masses offered for the deceased. The book of Maccabees reminds us that, It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins. (2 Macc. 12: 46) We should instill this practice in our children so that when we die there will be someone to pray for us. We often have Masses without any intention at all whether for the living or the dead. We know that the Mass is the most powerful prayer we can offer. We should take advantage of this great gift. When we pray for the souls in Purgatory we gain their appreciation, friendship, and intercession. The Holy Souls, along with us living, and the saints in heaven, make up the Catholic Church. One of my friends gave me a prayer for the Holy Souls from St. Gertrude the Great to free souls from purgatory: Eternal Father, I offer Thee the most precious blood of thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal Church, those in my own home, and within my family. Amen. You may wish to cut it out for your own use. Remember, too, that on Tuesday, November 20, 2018, at 7:30 p.m., we will have a special Requiem Mass for the Faithful departed. I hope everyone who is able will attend this Mass. The Metropolitan Catholic Chorale will provide the music. It should be an inspiring and prayerful Mass. In Jesus and Mary, Fr. Frank Samoylo
