TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST Prayer and Promise October 15 & 16, 2016 AS WE GATHER We ought always to pray and not lose heart. This is how Luke introduces the Gospel today (18:1). Then he records Jesus telling of the parable of the persistent widow and the unjust judge. God the Father is kind, gracious, and loving. While we may not always receive the answer we are looking for or according to the time frame we stipulate, our dear Father always delights to hear and answer the prayers of His people. For He is a good God, and He loves us with His whole creation. WELCOME Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom. I will meditate on your wonderful works, and I will proclaim your great deeds. Psalm 145:3,5b,6 HANDSHAKES & HUGS PREPARATION OPENING HYMN #797 Praise The Almighty Rise last stanza Praise the Almighty, my soul, adore Him! Yes, I will laud Him until death; With songs and anthems I come before Him As long as He allows me breath. From Him my life and all things came; Bless, O my soul, His holy name. Alleluia, Alleluia! Trust not in rulers; they are but mortal; Earthborn they are and soon decay. Vain are their counsels at life s last portal, When the dark grave engulfs its prey. Since mortals can no help afford, Place all your trust in Christ, our Lord. Alleluia, alleluia! Blessed, oh, blessed are they forever Whose help is from the Lord Most High, Whom from salvation can nothing sever, And who in hope to Christ draw nigh. To all who trust in Him, our Lord Will aid and counsel now afford. Alleluia, alleluia! Penitent sinners, for mercy crying, Pardon and peace from Him obtain; Ever the wants of the poor supplying, Their faithful God He will remain. He helps His children in distress, The widows and the fatherless. Alleluia, alleluia! Praise, all you people, the name so holy Of Him who does such wondrous things! 1 All that has being, to praise Him solely, With happy heart its amen sings. Children of God, with angel host Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost! Alleluia, alleluia! INVOCATION & OPENING SENTENCES & CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION Page 151 Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit. Pastor: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. People: But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Pastor: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. People: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways to the glory of your holy name. Amen. Pastor: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for His sake God forgives us all our sins. To those who believe in Jesus Christ He gives the power to become the children of God and bestows on them the Holy Spirit. May the Lord, who has begun this good work in us, bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. KYRIE Page 152 Pastor: In peace let us pray to the Lord. People: Lord, have mercy. Pastor: For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord. People Lord, have mercy. Pastor: For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to the Lord. People: Lord, have mercy. Pastor: For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord. 2

Refrain Power, riches, wisdom, and strength, and honor, blessing, and glory are His. Refrain Sing with all the people of God, and join in the hymn of all creation: Blessing, honor, glory, and might be to God and the Lamb forever. Amen. Refrain For the Lamb who was slain has begun His reign. Alleluia. This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. SALUTATION & COLLECT OF THE DAY Page 156 Pastor: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Pastor: Let us pray. Lord God, your generosity exceeds our understanding. Guide your people to practice generosity wisely and abundantly, so that the world may catch a glimpse of your unfathomable generosity through us; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 10:30 BAPTISM of Ellie Judith Gorney Page 268 WORD OLD TESTAMENT READING Genesis 32:22 30 ( I will not let You go unless You bless me. ) That night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two maidservants and his eleven sons and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. After he had sent them across the stream, he sent over all his possessions. So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob's hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. Then the man said, "Let me go, for it is daybreak." But Jacob replied, "I will not let you go unless you bless me." The man 3 asked him, "What is your name?" "Jacob," he answered. Then the man said, "Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men and have overcome." Jacob said, "Please tell me your name." But he replied, "Why do you ask my name?" Then he blessed him there. So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, "It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared." The sun rose above him as he passed Peniel, and he was limping because of his hip. Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the tendon attached to the socket of the hip, because the socket of Jacob's hip was touched near the tendon. Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. EPISTLE 2 Timothy 3:14 4:5 (Continue in the Word of God you have learned and have believed.) But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage-- with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry. Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. ALLELUIA Page 156 Alleluia. Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia, alleluia. Pastor: People: 4 The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the 16 th chapter. Glory to you, O Lord.

HOLY GOSPEL Luke 18:1 8 (God hears and answers the prayers of His people.) Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. He said: "In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared about men. And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, 'Grant me justice against my adversary.' "For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, 'Even though I don't fear God or care about men, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won't eventually wear me out with her coming!'" And the Lord said, "Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?" Pastor: People: This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. 10:30 ANTHEM When I Talk to Jesus God Will Deliver Me CHILDREN S MESSAGE SERMON HYMN #769 Eternal Spirit of the Living Christ Eternal Spirit of the living Christ, I know not how to ask or what to say; I only know my need, as deep as life, And only you can teach me how to pray. Come with the strength I lack, bring vision clear Of human need; O give me eyes to see Fulfillment of my life in love outpoured, My life in you, O Christ; your love in me. So let us lift our prayers to Him who invites us to pray and never lose heart. After each petition: Pastor: Lord, in your mercy, People: hear our prayer. At the conclusion of the prayers: Pastor:... one God, now and forever. OFFERTORY Page 159 What shall I render to the Lord for all His benefits to me? I will offer the sacrifice of thanksgiving and will call on the name of the Lord. I will take the cup of salvation and will call on the name of the Lord. I will pay my vows to the Lord now in the presence of all His people, in the courts of the Lord s house, in the midst of you, O Jerusalem. + SACRAMENT + PREFACE Pastor: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Pastor: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them to the Lord. Pastor: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give Him thanks and praise. Pastor: It is truly good, right, and salutary, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to you, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who on this day overcame death and the grave and by His glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify your glorious name, evermore praising you and saying: 5 6

SANCTUS & PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING People: Holy, holy, holy Lord God of pow r and might: Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Pastor: Blessed are you, Lord of heaven and earth, for you have had mercy on those whom you created and sent your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross. Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg you, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To you alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. THE LORD S PRAYER Page 162 Pastor: Lord remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray: Our Father.. WORDS OF OUR LORD Pastor: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is My +body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My +blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. THE PEACE OF THE LORD Pastor: The peace of the Lord be with you always. 7 AGNUS DEI Page 163 Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. HYMN #728 How Firm a Foundation How firm a foundation, O saints of the Lord, Is laid for your faith in His excellent Word! What more can He say than to you He has said Who unto the Savior for refuge have fled?

9 continued Fear not! I am with you, O be not dismayed, For I am your God and will still give you aid; I ll strengthen you, help you, and cause you to stand, Upheld by My righteous, omnipotent hand. The soul that on Jesus has leaned for repose I will not, I will not, desert to his foes; That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake, I ll never, no never, no never, forsake! When through fiery trials your pathway will lie, My grace, all sufficient, will be your supply. The flames will not hurt you; I only design Your dross to consume and your gold to refine. Throughout all their lifetime My people will prove My sov reign, eternal, unchangeable love; And then, when gray hairs will their temples adorn, Like lambs bosom be they will still in My borne. HYMN #587 I Know My Faith Is Founded I know my faith is founded On Jesus Christ my God and Lord And this my faith confessing, Unmoved I stand on His sure Word Our reason cannot fathom The truth of God profound; Who trusts in human wisdom Relies on shifting ground. God s Word is all sufficient, It makes divinely sure; And trusting in its wisdom, My faith shall rest secure. Increase my faith, dear Savior, For Satan seeks by night and day To rob me of this treasure And take my hope of bliss away. But, Lord, with You beside me, I shall be undismayed; And led by Your good Spirit, I shall be unafraid. Abide with me, O Savior, A firmer faith bestow; Then I shall bid defiance To every evil foe. In faith, Lord, let me serve You; Though persecution, grief and pain Should seek to overwhelm me, Let me a steadfast trust retain; And then at my departure, Lord, take me home to You, Your riches to inherit As all you said holds true. In life and death, Lord, keep me Until your heav n I gain, Where I by Your great mercy The end of faith attain. COMMON DISMISSAL POST-COMMUNION CANTICLE Page 164 People: Thank the Lord and sing His praise; tell ev ryone what He has done. Let all who seek the Lord rejoice and proudly bear His name. O God the Father, the fountain and source of all goodness, who in loving-kindness sent your only-begotten Son into the flesh, we thank you that for His sake you have given us pardon and peace in this Sacrament, and we ask you not to forsake your children but always to rule our hearts and minds by your Holy Spirit that we may be enabled constantly to serve you; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. BENEDICTION Pastor: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and + give you peace.
