A NOTE FROM YOUR PASTOR As I mentioned in a sermon a few weeks ago, we will shortly be entering the second year of Bishop Ricken s, Disciples on the Way. These first two years are focused on helping us pray more effectively and communicate better with God, so that our friendship with him can be as strong and enriching as possible. This is the core of our religion and every other human need is addressed through it. I m a lover of books. It s hard to express how enriched my life has been by reading just a few good books on prayer. I have a long way to go, but without the insights of these special saints and other author s, my friendship would be far short of where it is. Fortunately, Bishop Ricken has provided us with a suggested reading list. Here are a few of books on the list: Living Prayer by Bishop Robert Morneau, Celebrating Mass: A Guide for Understanding and Appreciating the Mass More Deeply & How to Pray like Jesus and the Saints: A Study Guide for Catholics both by Fr. Alfred McBride, Practicing the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence, Wrap yourself in Scripture: Praying and Reflecting on Scripture with Journaling by Karen and Laurence Dwyer, Conversing with God in Scripture: A Contemporary Approach to Lectio Divina by Stephen Binz, Meeting Jesus Christ- Meditations on the Word by J. Brian Bransfeld, The Holy Way: Practices for a Holy Life by Paula Huston, and Prayers for Beginners by Peter Kreeft to name a few. I am currently reading Living Prayer by Bishop Morneau. I m not finished but I highly recommend it. You can receive your copy at Cathedral Book and Gift. They are selling well and I can see why. It is a great choice, however take a look at Bishop s entire list at the Diocesan website, www.gbdioc.org. I m confident you will find something helpful for yourself or a friend. Having good relationships, especially with God, is the key to happiness and prayer, conversations with Christ, is the path to tapping the potential of this friendship. God bless you! Fr. Joe FIDEI DEFENSOR Fidei Defensor is a parish, lay apostolate, dedicated to evangelization, apologetics and teaching people how to explain the Catholic Faith with clarity, kindness and gentleness. Anyone may join; no previous experience needed. The only things you need are a love for Jesus Christ and His Church as well as a desire to increase your knowledge. Sessions will be held every fourth Saturday morning from 8-9:30 am in the Gehl Center located behind St. Francis Xavier Cathedral. The next session will be held on Saturday, September 26th. For information call Nate Stevens at 435-1723. ANNUAL RED MASS!! The annual Red Mass for the Green Bay Diocese will be celebrated Thursday, October 15th, at 5 pm at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral in Green Bay. The celebrant will be Bishop David Ricken. During this Mass, all members of the legal community and those who hold public office, including judges, government officials, attorneys, legal staff, paralegals and law school faculty, are reminded of the importance of their vocations and ask for God s guidance in administering their office or position with wisdom, justice, fortitude, compassion and counsel. All members of the public, Catholic and non-catholic, are invited to this Mass to join in this prayer. 131 S. www.sfxcathedralgb.org MUSIC MINISTRY As Summer wanes, our thoughts start to turn to the Fall season and the beginning of a new Cathedral Choir season. We are always looking for new singers. Currently we have three different choirs: Cathedral Choir, Schola Cantorum and Children s Schola. Cantors are also needed. If God is calling you to serve Him in this beautiful ministry of leading others in prayer, contact Jody Strnad at 680-0819 or msmusic65@gmail.com. CATHEDRAL PRAYER NETWORK If you have any special prayer requests that you would like the members of the Prayer Network Ministry to pray for, please call Kathy at 497-8060. Requests can also be submitted on the parish website: www.sfxcathedralgb.org. If you are interested in becoming a member of this ministry, call Kathy. 40 DAYS FOR LIFE 40 Days for Life starts September 23rd. Cathedral's time slot is on Fridays 4 pm - 6 p.m. We always need people to help walk, pray and fast for these 40 Days. YEAR OF CONSECRATED LIFE When you go to church it may be hard to see beyond what the priests, deacons, lectors, cantors, and others are doing at the moment (unless of course you re one of those people!). Behind that hour of Mass, however, are many hours of meetings, practice, and personal preparation that go into leading worship. But the work everyone else in a faith community does including yours is just as important. Supporting yourself, and maybe a family, as well as all the other tasks of life, if you do them in a spirit of faith and generosity, go just as far in building the kingdom of God. And perhaps the most important thing you do is worship itself. The very origin of the word liturgy is the "public work and service" of the church. Take Five for Faith THAT MAN IS YOU Men mark your calendars. That Man is You, begins September 16 th at 6 am at the Cathedral in the BWC Center. This program is modeled after some of the country s leading men s programs. That Man is You combines Church teaching, scripture, the wisdom of the saints and a little fun to address the pressures and temptations facing men in our modern culture. It seeks to form authentic leaders who will be capable of transforming homes and society. If interested please contact Shawn Zehms (920) 468-7075 or shawn7144@att.net. LITURGICAL ITEMS NEEDED Recently much needed liturgical items were purchased one being a ciborium to be used for holy week and larger Masses. Other items purchased were Aspergils (water sprinklers used for blessings during Mass) totaling $600. If you feel called to help defray the costs contact Sonia in the office at 432-4348. Thank you for your generosity. THANK YOU! To the Members of the Parish, Our family shall long remember the many acts of kindness shown to our mother during the 95 years that she was a member of this parish community. We cannot begin to thank all of the people that touched her life. Thank you for all those that prayed and supported us during this most difficult time. Please accept our heartfelt thanks for your concern. The Ellen Karwedsky Family ST. JOHN PAUL II CLASSICAL SCHOOL Are you tired of the same NEW thing? Try something OLD!
