The Cathedral Church of St. James The Eighth Sunday After Pentecost July 15, 2018 - Twilight Recital at 4:00pm; Choral Evensong at 4:30pm "Listen Lord" by Aaron Douglas in "God's Trombones: Seven Negro Sermons," 1927. Amos, a veritable nobody, variously described as a shepherd or a scrub farmer. He tells us something of his background, how he hails from a crossroads village, Tekoa, a day s journey from Jerusalem. There he keeps his flocks, alternating between the edges of the desert and the more fruitful valleys at the verge of the Dead Sea. The people of his town are dirt poor; so, evidently, is he. A meager existence. By all accounts a solitary spirit. Then one day the God of desert and plains, the God of solitaries, speaks to him. His life will never again be as it was, uncluttered, obscure, of no public moment. Go to Jerusalem! He obeys, from day one an outsider to the coterie of royal sycophant-prophets. He speaks in a country brogue, yea and nay, unnuanced, rude and intrepid even; take it or leave. Once more it unfolds, the age old-conflict between the Jerusalem claque- and a kind of bumpkin-prophet, up from the desert or countryside, rude, denouncing, intransigent. The story of Jesus, to be sure. Amos insists, all this religion is a cover; in the words of a later counterpart and critic, a spiritual aroma which we use to make intolerable injustice seem tolerable. (Marx) Wasting no moment on preliminaries, mincing no words, Amos is like a torch lit at a burning bush. - Daniel Berrigan, excerpts from Minor Prophets, Major Themes, RoseHill Catholic Worker: 1995.

Welcome to St. James Cathedral This sacred land is the territory of several Indigenous Nations - the Wendat, the Haudenosaunee, and the Anishnaabe, with special recognition to the Mississaugas of New Credit. We also acknowledge that we are on the shores of Niigaani-gichigami/Lake Ontario. This territory is governed by the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Treaty, an agreement between the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and the Anishnaabe Confederacy to peaceably share and sustain the life of the Great Lakes. In the spirit of that Treaty we seek to place at the centre of our gatherings the values of respectful reciprocity, diversity, peace, responsibility, and mutual aid. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; Blessed are thou among women, And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, Now and in the hour of our death. Amen. Please stand, as you are able, when the organ plays. Preces and Responses Kenneth Leighton O Lord, open thou our lips; And our mouth shall show forth thy praise. O God, make speed to save us; O Lord, make haste to help us. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. 1

Psalm 114 Psalm 115 Praise ye the Lord; The Lord s Name be praised. Please be seated. Chants by David Willcocks and John Goss When Israel came out of Egypt, and the house of Jacob from among the strange people, Judah was his sanctuary, and Israel his dominion. The sea saw that, and fled; Jordan was driven back. The mountains skipped like rams, and the little hills like young sheep. What aileth thee, O thou sea, that thou fleddest, and thou Jordan, that thou wast driven back? Ye mountains, that ye skipped like rams, and ye little hills, like young sheep? Tremble, thou earth, at the presence of the Lord: at the presence of the God of Jacob; Who turned the hard rock into a standing water, and the flint-stone into a springing well. Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto thy Name give the praise, for thy loving mercy and for thy truth s sake. Wherefore should the nations say, Where is now their God? As for our God, he is in heaven: he hath done whatsoever pleased him. Their idols are silver and gold, even the work of men s hands. They have mouths, and speak not: eyes have they, and see not. They have ears, and hear not: noses have they, and smell not. 2

They have hands, and handle not; feet have they, and walk not: neither speak they through their throat. They that make them are like unto them; and so are all such as put their trust in them. But thou, house of Israel, trust thou in the LORD: he is their succour and defence. Ye house of Aaron, put your trust in the LORD: he is their helper and defender. Ye that fear the LORD, put your trust in the LORD: he is their helper and defender. The LORD hath been mindful of us, and he shall bless us: even he shall bless the house of Israel; he shall bless the house of Aaron. He shall bless them that fear the LORD, both small and great. May the LORD increase you more and more, you and your children. Blessed be ye of the LORD, who hath made heaven and earth. All the whole heavens are the LORD S, but the earth hath he given to the children of men. The dead praise not thee, O LORD, neither all they that go down into Silence. But we will praise the LORD, from this time forth for evermore. Praise the LORD. Please stand, as you are able. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. First Lesson Please be seated. 1 Samuel 17: 50 18: 4 Reader So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone, striking down the Philistine and killing him; there was no sword in David s hand. Then David ran and stood over the Philistine; he grasped his sword, drew it out of its sheath, and killed him; then he cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled. The troops of Israel and Judah rose up with a shout and pursued 3

Reader the Philistines as far as Gath and the gates of Ekron, so that the wounded Philistines fell on the way from Shaaraim as far as Gath and Ekron. The Israelites came back from chasing the Philistines, and they plundered their camp. David took the head of the Philistine and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armour in his tent. When Saul saw David go out against the Philistine, he said to Abner, the commander of the army, Abner, whose son is this young man? Abner said, As your soul lives, O king, I do not know. The king said, Inquire whose son the stripling is. On David s return from killing the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul, with the head of the Philistine in his hand. Saul said to him, Whose son are you, young man? And David answered, I am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite. When David had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was bound to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. Saul took him that day and would not let him return to his father s house. Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul. Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that he was wearing, and gave it to David, and his armour, and even his sword and his bow and his belt. Here endeth the first lesson. Magnificat Please stand, as you are able. Plainsong Tone VIII, I My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me; and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel; As he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. 4

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Second Lesson Please be seated. Mark 1: 21-27 Reader Jesus and his disciples went to Capernaum; and when the sabbath came, he entered the synagogue and taught. They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. Just then there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, and he cried out, What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God. But Jesus rebuked him, saying, Be silent, and come out of him! And the unclean spirit, throwing him into convulsions and crying with a loud voice, came out of him. They were all amazed, and they kept on asking one another, What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him. Reader Here endeth the second lesson. Nunc Dimittis Please stand, as you are able. Dorian Service Thomas Tallis Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Apostles Creed I believe in God All the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth: And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, Born of the Virgin Mary, Suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, dead, and buried: He descended into hell; The third day he rose again from the dead; 5

All He ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; The holy Catholic Church; The Communion of Saints; The Forgiveness of sins; The Resurrection of the body, And the Life everlasting. Amen. The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. Please kneel, as you are able. Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. Amen. O Lord, show thy mercy upon us; And grant us thy salvation. O Lord, save the Queen; And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. Endue thy Ministers with righteousness; And make thy chosen people joyful. O Lord, save thy people; And bless thine inheritance. Give peace in our time, O Lord; Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou O Lord. O God, make clean our hearts within us; And take not thy Holy Spirit from us. 6

The Collects LORD of all power and might, who art the author and giver of all good things: Graft in our hearts the love of thy Name, increase in us true religion, nourish us with all goodness, and of thy great mercy keep us in the same; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen. O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed: Give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee we being defended from the fear of our enemies may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen. Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. Please be seated. Anthem The Beatitudes Text: Matthew 5: 3-12; Music: Arvo Pärt Blessed are the poor in spirit : for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn : for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek : for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness : for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful : for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart : for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers : for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake : for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you and say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad : for great is your reward in heaven : for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. Amen. 7

Homily An offering will now be taken for the life and ministry of the Cathedral. Please stand, as you are able. Hymn at the Collection Text: William Williams; Music: John Hughes; Tune: Cwm Rhondda 8

Prayers Please kneel, as you are able. A Prayer of Saint John Chrysostom Almighty God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplications unto thee; and dost promise that when two or three are gathered together in thy Name thou wilt grant their requests: Fulfil now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants, as may be most expedient for them; granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. People Amen. The Blessing The peace of God, which passeth all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord: And the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, be amongst you and remain with you always. People Amen. Final Respond The Lord be with you; And with thy spirit. Let us bless the Lord; Thanks be to God. Edward Woodall Naylor Postlude Variations de Concert, Op.1 Joseph Bonnet (1884 1944) 9
