The tasks above are the minimum that each pupil, in each set, is expected to do. You have 1 week to complete the tasks. All pupils are welcome to try other tasks if they wish to impress their teacher and show off their super duper History skills!! 1

2 Task 1 Numeracy Skills (You must complete tasks 1 and 2) The population of the Roman Empire. 1) Examine the population table below and create a bar graph which shows these figures. Remember to use a RULER and a PENCIL and to give your graph a title and to label the axis. See the example for the layout of a bar chart. 2) Use the graph and the Roman Empire maps to write a 200 word report explaining why the Romans invaded these countries and what they gained as a result. Think about how these resources would have been used in the Roman Empire i.e. marble from Asia would have been used for flooring, statues and the Romans baths. 4 Task 2 Study Skills Your aim is to create a tourist brochure about the Roman city of Pompeii BEFORE the volcanic eruption. This is to encourage Roman people to visit Pompeii which was a thriving city with 20,000 residents, a structured government, indoor running water, a market place and an amphitheatre which regularly entertained with its gladiatorial games. This is to be written in the PRESENT TENSE as though you are there at the time BEFORE the eruption. Use persuasive language, rhetorical questions, repetition, alliteration, exaggeration and emotive language to make Pompeii come alive and make people want to visit. THINK ABOUT WOW words bright, vibrant, exciting etc. and use the themes in the WORLD CLOUD below to help you. Your brochure should include - A map of Pompeii with a key showing what is where (see below for blank template and a completed template). Label your map with the following; amphitheatre, basilica, forum, cemetery, temples and baths. REMEMBER YOUR MAP MUST HAVE A TITLE, KEY, SCALE (write not to scale) and COMPASS. All about the shops Pompeii was a port city and traded with the many ships which visited from exotic locations. What the houses look like. How they have running water for public fountains link this to the aqueduct system. What the baths are like and what happens there. What the amphitheatre looks like and what happens there What the basilica (the forum) looks like and what is there. All the different religious temples. 4

7 Task 3 Literacy " a devastation of the loveliest of lands, in a memorable disaster shared by peoples and cities."...pliny the Younger In 79AD Pliny the Younger witnessed the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius which spewed tons of molten ash, pumice and sulphuric gases miles into the atmosphere. Therefore suffocating and burying the inhabitants of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabiae. Pliny wrote letters to his friend Tacitus detailing the horrors that he witnessed from his uncles villa in Misenum. Ashes were already falling, not as yet very thickly. I looked round: a dense black cloud was coming up behind us, spreading over the earth like a flood. 'Let us leave the road while we can still see, I said, or we shall be knocked down and trampled underfoot in the dark by the crowd behind. We had scarcely sat down to rest when darkness fell, not the dark of a moonless or cloudy night, but as if the lamp had been put out in a closed room. Task Imagine that you are Pliny the Younger watching the horrors unfold in front of you and create a range of diary extracts covering the several days of the eruption. This MUST be written in FIRST PERSON and in PRESENT TENSE. 7

8 Task 4 Creativity Research the Roman Gods or Goddesses and then create a mosaic using any material that you want so get creative Romans lived in houses called VILLAS. The floors and walls of these Villas were decorated in elaborate MOSAICS. MOSAICS showed everything from scenes of everyday life, to fantastic images from Roman and Greek MYTHOLOGY. Many Romans believed that more colorful MOSAICS would show people how wealthy they were! How Romans made Mosaics First, an expert Mosaic maker would draw a plan of the design and pattern. A small area of the floor at a time is covered in wet plaster. Why would they only do a small bit at a time? The mosaic maker would then add small pieces of tile to the plaster. The tiles are laid according to the design. Why would they follow the design? When the mosaic was finished it would be polished. Why do you think they would polish the mosaic? These are actual ROMAN MOSAICS. Mars was the God of War Venus was the Goddess of love and beauty and she was also the protector of gardens and flowers. Cupid was the God of Love. Minerva was the Goddess of wisdom and skill. She was also the Goddess of storms and the thunderbolt, and the Goddess of War but she favoured only defensive war. Mercury was the God of trade, thievery, cunning and trickery. He was also the Messenger of the Gods. Diana is the Goddess of the Moon. Pluto was the God of the underworld. Jupiter was king of the Gods. Juno was the God of the light and sky. 8

9 Extension Tasks 1. Design and make your own shield and helmet. 2. Create a media film about the Roman life or the destruction of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabiae. 3. Write and perform a play based on the story of the murder of Julius Caesar. 4. Make a puzzle game about the Roman Empire. 5. Construct a model to demonstrate a volcanic eruption. 6. Compose a song that would encourage someone to be part of the Roman Army. 7. Illustrate what the Roman Era was like with a poster. 8. Compare two Emperors and write a biography about what type of rulers they were. 9. Construct a model of a Roman Villa. 10. Create a timeline of the Roman invasion and settlement in Britain. 9
