2 Chicago Historical Society (Ill.) collection of manuscripts about Mormons Chicago Historical Society (Ill.) collection of manuscripts about Mormons, Scope and Content Contains documents pertaining to Mormons and Mormonism in Illinois, particularly as found in the Mason Brayman papers and the John J. Hardin papers, and also as collected by Albert D. Hagar, Chicago Historical Society librarian. Includes 1832 and 1840 letters from Joseph Smith to Emma Smith, other documents signed or issued by Joseph Smith, a letter from James J. Strang to Emma Smith, and letters from Emma Smith and Joseph Smith III. The Kirtland Safety Society stock subscription ledger and the docket record kept by Hancock County justices of the peace Ebenezer Robinson and Aaron Johnson are also included. A substantial number of documents relate to events surrounding Joseph Smith's murder, mob depredations resulting in Mormon agreements to leave Illinois, and the final expulsion of Mormons from Nauvoo in September Contains letters from Brigham Young, Illinois governor Thomas Ford and other state and Hancock County political and military leaders, anti-mormons, and those interested in the history of Mormonism. Among correspondents are John Taylor, Wilford Woodruff, Willard Richards, Orson Pratt, Orson Hyde, George A. Smith, Daniel H. Wells, Brigham Young Jr., J. B. Backenstos, Mason Brayman, Thomas S. Brockman, Benjamin Clifford, Miner R. Deming, Thomas Gregg, John J. Hardin, Andrew Johnston, William B. Warren, Levi Williams, Stephen S. Harding, and Alfred Cumming. The collection also includes sundry items collected by Arthur B. Deming, a statement by E. D. Howe, and information relating to Sidney Rigdon, Doctor Philastus Hurlbut, Solomon Spaulding, and the Kinderhook Plates.
