1 South Davis Family History Center 3350 South 100 East Bountiful, Utah (801) Hours of Operation Weekdays: Mon. thru Fri. 9 AM to 4 PM Evenings: Tues. thru Thurs. 7 PM to 9 PM Saturdays 10 AM -1 PM Closed Holidays Dear Friends, September - October 2013 It was most interesting to note that the new director of the Salt Lake City Family History Center, Diane Loosle, and Paul Nauta, FamilySearch public affairs manager, both used the same root word to describe the direction in which Family History work is moving. Sister Loosle speaks of, introducing people to family history and discovering their story in a really fun and engaging way. Brother Nauta reported that, We will, in the next 12 months, launch probably three if not five of these very interactive discovery centers. The root word in both statements is discover. The significance of this word and its influence on the direction of family history is linked to the Book of Mormon. In 1 Nephi 5:14 we read that, Lehi, also found upon the plates of brass a genealogy of his fathers; wherefore he knew that he was a descendant of Joseph; yea, even that Joseph who was the son of Jacob, who was sold into Egypt, and who was preserved by the hand of the Lord. Verse 16 then tells us that And thus my father, Lehi, did discover the genealogy of his fathers. We are engaged in a work that is new, it is thrilling, and it is certainly the fulfillment of prophesy. We are also engaged in a work that has ancient and eternal roots. May the Lord bless you as you serve, teach, and help others to discover their own ancestors and their stories. Thank you for everything, John Dietrich -1-

Oct. 3-Dec. 7:00 PM These family history classes taught me what I needed to know to find ancestors and family members that needed their temple work done. I also learned where to find stories and pictures about my ancestors that have made them come to life for me. Family History is not hard and boring, it is fun and exciting!!! I am so glad I took this course. I always thought Family History would be difficult to do and time consuming. What I learned was that with all the new technologies available and the new sites to search for records on, I could add to what my aunts and grandmas had found and complete the temple ordinances of persons that were missed. I have learned so much and am teaching my family how to help me!! This has been so rewarding for me, I am very glad I took these classes. Kathy Palmer -3-

North Canyon, NC7...Sat 1&3 10am-1pm WE WOULD LIKE TO GIVE A BIG THANKS TO: Sandra Wardle...Julie Bird...Penny MacKay...Josh Kohler...Garner Wood for all of their service to the Center. If you missed any of the Staff Training Meetings, the handouts will be posted under the Consultant News Button on the FHC Desktops. There is the information there to fix some of the problems in FAMILY TREE. THE FUTURE OF FHC'S The Salt Lake City Family History Library has a new director and new concepts are coming for the library and Familysearch Family History Centers. 1. FHC's will be multimedia rich and interactive discovery centers. They will be more youth and family oriented. Offering fun experiences and activities for the entire family. 2. FHC Staff members should not confine ourselves to the brick and mortar walls of our family history center. We are encouraged to reach out and help via social networking websites as well as FamilySearch s own Wiki. Take an opportunity to turn your work inside out. The idea is to provide to the community help where they want it. Staff members at family history centers often find themselves with no patrons to help", said Art Johnson in his session at the 2011 BYU Family History Conference. Johnson encouraged family history consults to reach out and help via these social networking websites as well as FamilySearch s own Wiki. There is a mistaken idea that we as centers, as consultants, are not supposed to interact with societies. Not true! We have different purposes but we can help one another. Take an opportunity to turn your work inside out, said Johnson. Become more extraverted in helping others. -4-

5 Notes From Leonard Here is some information about the BYU Conference... These notes are from the Ancestry Insider who attended the sessions. We are blessed to have a Family History calling. Enjoy, Leonard Plaizier BECOME AGENTS OF CHANGE Elder Allan Packer My purpose today is to extend to you an invitation to become agents of change, said Elder Allan F. Packer. Elder Packer was the opening keynote at the Brigham Young University (BYU) 2013 Conference on Family History and Genealogy. The theme this year is Strengthening Ties that Bind Families Together Forever. It is really a remarkable time. Perhaps more changes are taking place in family history than at any other time in the world, he said. Elder Packer explained that change is fundamental to life. It is really something we should embrace. He said that there are those who are oblivious to change. There are those who observe it. There are those who participate. And then there are those helping others embrace it. The change that Elder Packer wants us to effect is the involvement of more people in family history. About 60% of people in the United States have expressed an interest in family history, but only a few percent are actually involved. He challenged us to inspire others to become involved. I ask you to ponder what you could do and how you would do it. Now is the time for change, said Elder Packer, because of the greater availability of tools and resources. Because these are available online, the new Family History Center is the home. There is also great cooperation between companies, organizations, and people. One reason to get more people involved is the strengthening effect family history has on individuals and families. Elder Packer quoted from a Parade magazine article by Bruce Feiler. When a team of psychologists measured children's resilience, they found that the kids who knew the most about their family's history were best able to handle stress. There are specific things you can do to get more people involved. One thing is to involve young people. The youth have been amazing as they ve become involved in family history, said Elder -5-

6 Packer. ( The youth is a term used by the Church to reference Church members aged 12 to 18.) Those becoming involved in FamilySearch Indexing are giving up video gaming time to do so. The Church also encourages local congregations to call youth as family history consultants. The youth know computers and are able to help older people use the technology. To get more people involved, simplify family history and change the sequence of how we introduce people to it. Start by helping people discover themselves. Use stories and pictures. Elder Packer showed the cover of a booklet that the Church is currently printing and preparing to distribute. It is a simplified approach to the introduction of family history to the youth and has some space for stories Each of us have stories that are worth recording, Elder Packer said. He related the story of a man in Ghana. He was sitting in the Church s Ghana Temple when a younger man happened by and by chance struck up a conversation. The two spoke for several minutes when a realization hit the younger man. You are my father! he said to the older man. The two had been separated when the younger man was very young. Separately, each had investigated and then joined the Church. Both had travelled some distance to be at the temple that day. And they happened to strike up a conversation. Imagine the feelings of a little boy having been separated from his father. Image the feelings of the father, said Elder Packer. This story is worth recording. Each of us have stories that are worth recording, he said. Love is the great motivator. Stories create feelings and stories about ancestors create feelings about ancestors. Feelings motivate us to do something. Think about sharing stories with your great, great, great, great, great grandson, said Elder Packer. Think about how knowing his family history your stories might strengthen him to deal with the challenges he will face. Become Agents Of Change. -6-

9 THE BYU GENEALOGY CONFERENCE Hidden Treasures At Ancestry.Com At the 2013 BYU Conference on Family History and Genealogy, Loretta Lou Dennis Szucs of Ancestry.com presented a session titled Hidden Treasure at Ancestry.com. Our people are more than names and dates and places, she said. They run in our blood and in our DNA. Ancestry. com now has 11 billion records and is adding more every day. The home page has a section that shows the more recently added and updated databases. The key is to zero in on the records you need, she said. One method of zeroing in is to click the search menu, scroll down, and click a state (or division of another country) on the map. This leads to a space that lists databases with content covering that state. The card catalog is another way to zero in on particular databases. When using the catalog, there are two search fields. Don t use the title field unless you know the exact title. Instead, use the keyword field. Ancestry.com s member trees now number over 50 million with 170 million attached photos, stories, and documents. I made my tree public, she said, and someone spotted it and she wrote to me and said I notice you don t have any pictures [of so-and-so]. I have a picture. Would you like to have it? Making your tree public might lead to treasures for you. The Ancestry.com learning center is a hidden treasure. You can download charts for free and there are all kinds of getting started helps. It is also possible to search by category. Click on Search and then use the categories along the right side of the page. cs/satellite?childpagename=uslearningcenter%2flearning_c%2fpagedefault&pagename=lear ningwrapper&cid= Szucs talked about non-population census schedules. These can add a variety of interesting facts about an ancestor. We often overlook the fact of looking at the big picture, she said. Records of vital events can be found in unexpected places. The ship Liverpool arrived in New York in March Of the 416 passengers who left England, 37 would die before reaching the American shore. The stories around these records are so compelling, Szucs said. Szucs talked about many individual databases. In these little tiny collections that don t surface right away you might find gold. In closing she said, Ancestry s aim is to preserve family history records across the globe, and to make them searchable online. -9-
