1 37 Years of Rotary Service They profit most who serve the best ROTARY CLUB OF NORTH SCOTT - BULLETIN Vol. 39 No NSRotary@aol.com January 05, 2011 FRIDAY AT THE STEEPLEGATE Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center Jerry Jones, Executive Director I feel incredibly fortunate to have worked at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center for the past 12 years. Every day, we have the opportunity to instill young people, who have encountered tragedy and even despair, with a sense of hope. In all of them I see vast potential to be great. We simply need to convince them of their potential, provide the opportunity to work towards it and encourage them to realize it. It is that belief that drives my efforts. I dream of the day that the King Center is thought of as the most effective resource for youth to actualize their potential. I see youth not just completing high school but excelling so that they can choose their future as lawyers, business leaders, or even non-profit directors. But it is not a pipe dream. It is not just possible. It is expected. The staff give their best efforts on a daily basis to bring this to reality. Despite a limited budget, the King Center enjoys some of the best staff in the Quad Cities who bring high quality services. The result has been a growing use of our programs. Last year, over 150 kids attended camp daily. This year s numbers will be close to the same. We have seen the same trend in the afterschool and drug prevention programs. The results: 70 percent improve their grades, 90 percent improve attendance, 95 percent display improved decision making skills. Still, these results do not compare to the stories we hear from parents and teachers who see dramatic changes in the behavior of their kids simply because there are more people in their lives that believe in them. This is what I am a part of and it is what drives me in the face of a budget crisis, skepticism, disbelief, and despair. There are days that the weight of the world in on me but one hour teaching a child their multiplication tables and I feel on top of the world. What happens at the King Center inspires me to be great at what I do and to expect that in those that we serve. I am incredibly fortunate. Jerry Jones, King Center executive director

LOREN RICKARD Retired Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Loren Rickard, joined the North Scott Rotary club at the last regular meeting on December 11, His wife, Jody attended as he received the charge from past president, Chuck Briegel. He was proposed for membership by Bill Tubbs. Loren & Jody have 2 sons (& families) that reside in Eldridge and a daughter that lives in Tucson, AZ. They chose to retire to Eldridge to be close to family. Loren was in veterinary practice from He was in private practice in Brooklyn, Iowa for over 30 years. While living in Brooklyn he was extremely active in city government, being the mayor for seven years, president of the local Kiwanis club, on the Economic Development board, Community Foundation Board and many other local activities. In Loren s free time, he likes to read, travel, hike, bike, kayak and work out. Loren will return to Rotary in February, as he is spending January in AZ. THANK YOU S RECEIVED Dear N.S. 4 Mike Reese and the Davenport Central Choir performed at our Christmas Party. Arrangements by Jody Johnston-Mohr and her Social Committee. Miss Iowa, Pauli Mayfield and her mother were guests of honor. Pauli performed some of the items she will use at the Miss America Pageant. Operation Warm As part of our Operation Warm project, coats to kids, Coats were delivered to Ed White School in Eldridge, Iowa. Alan Shepard School In Long Grove, Iowa And Virgil Grissom School In Princeton, Iowa Coats were also delivered to Adams School in Davenport, IA And Fillmore School in Davenport. Official presentations will be made at a later date. More Coats have been ordered and additional schools will be Presented with the opportunity to participate.

Everything was perfect as Mike Reese and his talented choir sang holiday songs while dinner was served. Charlie Jones received a surprise gift delivered from Santa himself, via Miss Iowa. It was a Rotary theme necktie from the Carl -Wilhelm Stenhammer era. Seems President Charlie was left out earlier that week when Illinois presidents received ties at the area meeting at the iwireless center. One of Santa s elves came all the way down from the North Pole, just so that Miss Iowa could deliver the special tie to Charlie. Julie Martens, mother of Miss Iowa, was also an honored guest that evening. Miss Iowa sang some songs and told about her send off party the week before at the Adler Theater. She is probably in Las Vegas at this time, competing in the Miss America pageant, which will be broadcast on January 15 on ABC. The 4 Way Test Of the things we THINK SAY or DO 1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3. Will it build GOOD WILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
