However, it was recently discovered that a Confederate widow was residing in an assisted living facility in West Helena. Maude Hopkins of Lexa, is very much alive. Mrs. Hopkins married her first husband, Confederate William M. Cantrell, an aging widower, in She was 19 and he was 86. Living alone and in his 80 s, he employed Maude to cook and care for him. Being mindful of the moral standards of the time, they agreed to marry so as to not bring disrespect upon her name. Confederate Cantrell was in French s Battalion, Company A, of the Virginia Infantry. Maude cared for Cantrell until his death on Feb. 26, 1937, at 90 years of age. Following his death, she remarried and had two daughters. Recently members from the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis Chapter #2191, New Orleans, La., visited her. Members Lea Martin of Mandeville, La, Lynn Dowdy of Jonesboro and prospective member Dayl Taylor of Trumann spent time with Mrs. Hopkins and her granddaughter, Donna. Mrs. Hopkins was presented with a fall arrangement for her room. During the visit, they learned about her marriage to Cantrell and what life was like when she married him. Mrs. Hopkins was made a member of the David 0. Dodd Chapter #212, Pine Bluff in August of Elections for Division Offices 2008 The Offices of Border Brigade Commander and Indian Brigade Commander are up for nomination this year and will be voted on in the month of May. 2 My fellow Compatriots Well, the Holiday season is over, and the New Year has begun. It s hard to believe that 148 years ago a President of this the United States attacked members of his own country. In one battle alone (Gettysburg) 28,063 Confederate soldiers and 23,049 Unionist lost there lives. A Great number of Americans died in Lincolns War. And some experts say the toll reached 700,000. The number that is most often quoted is 620,000. At any rate, these casualties exceed the nation's loss in all its other wars, from the Revolution through Vietnam. The Union Armies had from 2, to 2,750,000 men. Their losses, by the best estimates: Battle Deaths: 110,070 Disease, ect: 250,152 Total 360,222 The Confederate Strength, known less accurately because of missing records, was from 750,000 to 1,250,000. Its estimated losses: Battle deaths: 94,000 Disease, ect: 164,000 Total 258,000 The leading authority on casualties of war, Thomas L. Livermore, admitting the handicap of poor records in some cases, studied 48 of the war s battles and concluded: Of every 1,000 Unionist in battle, 112 were wounded. of every 1,000 Confederates, 150 were hit. Morality was greater among confederate wounded, because of inferior medical service. All of this death and destruction was not due to slavery as many have been taught through out the years, but because of greed and power. It was the greed of one man to have extended power over a country. It was the greed of one man to have more control over the people of one Nation. This same man is considered today as an icon, and one of Americas greatest Hero s. A man known in our children s history books for reportedly freeing a race of people from bondage in states he had no authority over. The ancestors for which we honor today, were men who stood up against this same man for their possessions and fought life and limb to keep what was rightfully theirs. Although that war is over, the battle continues today within the SCV to keep those possessions and our heritage alive. As those brave men lost comrades. We too are loosing members. Let s continue to fight and introduce the one true organization we have to new brothers. Denver L Erickson Ks. Div. 3 Maj. Thomas J Key Camp Robert Edward Lee Lee/Jackson Banquet Thomas Jonathan Jackson The Major Thomas J. Key Camp #1920 proudly announces its Seventh Annual Lee- Jackson Banquet will take place on Saturday evening January 26, We are pleased that our guest speaker for this banquet id the noted historian, author, battlefield preservationist, and hard core reenactor Mr. Robert Lee Hodge. Many people are familiar with his picture as it appeared on the cover of the book "Confederates In The Attic". There will be door prizes and our annual auction. The location of the banquet is still to be determined as is the price per ticket. Every effort will be made to keep the cost at the same $20.00 amount that it has been for the last several years. All SCV members are invited as well as guests. Contact Key Camp commander Spike Speicher for further details. Please mark your calendar now (Saturday January 26, 2008) so you don't miss this exciting event. The William H. Gregg Chapter #268 Military Order of the Stars and Bars In the Military Order of the Stars and Bars (MSOB), our main focus as descendants of the confederate officers and the civilian Confederate government is to emphasize faith in Christ, family and tradition, and to preserve confederate history for posterity. For MOSB membership, it is open to direct or collateral male descendants of confederate commissioned officers and of any elected or appointed member of the Executive Branch of the Confederate government. I invite you to join this organization of honor and service. If interested, please contact Scott A. 5 Congressman Virgil Goode To Receive Stephen Dill Lee Award Wednesday Elm Springs, Columbia, TN 3 December Sons of Confederate Veterans Commander-in-Chief Christopher M. Sullivan will present the Stephen Dill Lee Award to Congressman Virgil Goode of Virginia at a ceremony sponsored by the Jefferson Davis Camp, #305, Sons of Confederate Veterans. Congressman Goode (which rhymes with mood) represents the 5th District of Virginia in the U. S. Congress. This includes the Southside of Virginia to Charlottesville. He served in the Virginia Senate beginning at the age of 27 as a Democrat. He later became an Independent, and ultimately in 2002, a Republican. Congressman Goode is a member of the Liberty Caucus which meets each Thursday while in session and is hosted for lunch by Congressman Ron Paul. He will speak at the Rosslyn banquet honoring him on his favorite subject, Robert E. Lee. The event is the annual Christmas party for the camp and their guests. Romney Agitates Confederate Descendants Elm Springs, Columbia TN Nov. 29 Sons of Confederate Veterans leader Christopher M. Sullivan issued the following statement in response to "Mitt Romney proposes himself to be president of the United States but last night he clearly demonstrated not only his ignorance of American history but also his contempt for Southerners who love and respect their Confederate ancestors. "Gov. Romney went way over the line when he attacked Southerners for respecting the historical significance of the Confederate flag. Perhaps the citizens of his state of Massachusetts still hate Southerners, but Gov. Romney should not expect us to accept his outrageous attack on Southern heritage." Responding to a question about the Confederate flag, Romney said, "That flag frankly, is divisive and shouldn't be shown. Right now with the kinds of issues we've got in this country, I'm not going to get involved with a flag like that." "That's not a flag that I would recognize so that I would hold it up in my room." "The people of our country have decided not to fly that flag. I think that's the right thing. "Sullivan went on to say, "We were not aware that the people of the country have had their First Amendment rights abridged as Mr. Romney seems to desire. Whether Gov. Romney likes it or not, Confederate flags are freely flown throughout the U.S. and in other countries as well." "The Sons of Confederate Veterans, Inc. does not participate in partisan politics. We do speak out when anyone disparages the honorable service of Confederate soldiers and the symbols which identified them." Sullivan concluded. 5
