3 A big wig meant that you were a wealthy person. Wealthy people could afford larger, more fashionable wigs. Sometimes today we refer to important people as big wigs.

4 When women wanted to clean their chimney, they would lower a chicken or goose down from the top the chimney. As it fell, the bird would frantically beat its wings, scrubbing the chimney walls as it flew down the chimney.

5 In colonial times, the were no garbage trucks to come to each house and take away garbage. Instead, colonists would leave their garbage out on the streets, so that pigs would end up eating the garbage at night.

6 Children were expected to behave at all time, especially in school and church. To make sure children behaved, a tithing stick was used. A tithing stick was a long stick that had a hard knob on one end, and a furry fox or squirrel tail on the other end. If you fell asleep in church (a big no-no!), you would get tickled with the furry end of the stick to wake you up. If you giggled or talked during church, you would get bopped on the head with the hard end of the tithing stick.

8 Colonial women and girls were mostly in charge of taking care of the home. The mothers would teach their daughters how to cook, clean, and raise children. TASKS & CHORES: cooking over a fire or in a brick oven taking care of the farm animals laundry making candles spinning, weaving, and making clothes

9 Colonial men and boys were responsible for taking care of the family farm and land by planning and harvesting crops. Some men might have had other jobs such as a printer, wigmaker, or a doctor. RESPONSIBILITIES: plowing the fields harvesting and gathering crops A plow was pulled by a horse while men walked behind it. Plows would prepare the soil for planting. Apprenticeship When boys were learning a specific trade, or job, they would apprentice a master. This meant that they went to work for someone who could teach them the job until they became a master themselves. Click here to learn more about being an apprentice.

10 Slavery existed during colonial times. African Americans were brought over from Africa and forced to work for some colonists. Slavery mostly existed in the southern colonies. Slaves were forced to work in the fields. They were often mistreated by the masters. Life as a slave was very hard work. Plantations Slaves and their masters lived on plantations. Plantations were large farms with homes for both the master and the slaves. It was like a small village. Click here to learn more about being a slave. Cotton and tobacco were two crops grown on plantations.

11 Since there were no grocery stores in the colonies like we have today, colonists grew a lot of their food. They also hunted animals for meat. Eating at the dinner table was different in colonial times. Often, families would stand around the table because they wouldn t have enough chairs for everyone. They would mostly eat with their hands.
