Wanted: Bike Trail Volunteers Ron Kohagen Frank Frederick and the Bremer County Conservation Board are responsible for the Grump portion of the bike trail from Readlyn city limits to HWY 63. He would like to have a list of volunteers that could be called to help with tree trimming, hauling brush and spray painting the wood fences this fall. The volunteers will work with employees of the Conservation Board. Our beautiful trail has quite a few branches that are hanging low, and the late July wind storm really tore into the birch trees on the East side of Crane Creek bridge. Who s the best looking Grump? Recently, a bunch of grumps, past and present, had the opportunity to be photographed with the original Mr. Grump. The question is, which one of the live Grumps looks the most like the Grump Bust? The current Readlyn Grump, Charlie Albrecht, would love to hear your opinion! The Readlyn Community Club (RCC) and the Grump Days Committee wanted to be transparent with everyone in our community. Many felt our Grump Days was a success by all the happiness and memories it gave our children and families, but there is a side you all need to know. Grump Days is at risk to be celebrated in the future unless we get more support. This year, we received $18,770 in donations, mostly from a few community members and businesses; with our overall expenses totaling $20,800. This resulted in a loss of $2,030. Each year, we research new ideas and other ways to have the same great outcome but at a lower cost. Unfortunately, with inflation and the decrease of donations, this financial difference occurred. We are asking from our community members (you) for more support so we can continue the tradition of Grump Days as we have in the years past. Below are some of our costs and needs. Tent rental: $2730 Fireworks: $7500 Porta Pots: $ 750 Evening entertainment: $1800 Kids in the Park: $3800 Hypnotist: $1000 These are not all the expenses to Grump Days or the countless hours from the present committee members to make Grump Days happen. It is our responsibility, the Readlyn Community Club, to make our community aware of what it takes for this wonderful celebration to happen. We are asking for stronger support from you, our community members, through either financial or volunteer support. Simply said We need more volunteers and financial support! Showcasing skills at the Iowa State Fair By Natalie Risse, Chapter Reporter During the Iowa State Fair, August 11-21, Wapsie Valley FFA members were busy showcasing their skills, projects, and demonstrations. Connor Jones entered a restored tractor and received a purple ribbon. Brandon Nading entered two restored tractors and received blue ribbons for both. Multiple members displayed photographs they had captured, including Alana Platte, Marina Hilbert, Marisa Thurm, Alec Marticoff, and Dayten Wittenburg. They all did very well, receiving mainly blue ribbons. Peyton Schares showed her horse, receiving a white ribbon in flags, a red ribbon in poles, and 5th place purple in barrels. Breanna Hakeman also showed her horse, receiving a white ribbon in flags, a blue ribbon in barrels, and a blue ribbon in poles. Eric Richards represented the chapter by showing in the dairy show. He received first place senior yearling. Britney Hershey exhibited market and breeding meat goats in the meat goat show as well. Her market wether received 8th, 3 to 6 month received 10th, ½ year doe received 8th, and 2 to 3 years doe received 4th. Two Wapsie FFA members, Ben Huebner and Carson Woods, exhibited crops. Ben Huebner received 4th place corn. Carson Woods received 7th place corn and 8th place soybeans. Erika Jeanes entered peppers in the horticulture division and received 6th place. In addition to the entries, many Wapsie FFA members participated in the Iowa State Fair through the chapter s agricultural demonstration and running the Dairy Goat show. This year, the chapter s agricultural demonstration was a trivia game for the public. Through the Iowa FFA Association, FFA chapters from across the state are encouraged to hold an agricultural demonstration to educate the fairgoers about the importance of agriculture. Also, the Wapsie Valley FFA chapter is responsible for setting up, checking in, and keeping score at the FFA Dairy Goat show. In between shifts for agricultural demonstration and the goat show, Wapsie FFA sold collectable tractors for the Iowa FFA Foundation. Overall, the members of Wapsie Valley FFA represented the chapter and Iowa FFA Association very well. It was a wonderful day on August 6 for many of the Old Grumps from Readlyn participating in the Tripoli Days parade. Eight of us had the privilege to ride and say hello to so many attendees of that parade. Some of us had our picture taken with the Grump Bust to see which of us most looked like the Grump of 1904 who got off the train that day. See the photos on page one of this issue of the Readlyn Chronicle, then please comment on your opinion. We planned on going as a group to Denver on Aug. 20 also. I m sure that all of the past Grumps and myself are so very proud of this community for coming together and donating so much toward the Splash Pad. A big thank-you to the Readlyn Telephone Co. for matching the individual donations and for those other businesses that made the goal possible. This proves that there really are 857 friendly people and only one old grump in Readlyn. We have more proof of that as a couple of weeks ago about 30 friends came to the farm and together we processed a large amount of sweet corn to be used for the annual church dinner at St. Matthews. There were children, high school students, young families and lots of us senior citizens participating. We all enjoyed the togetherness and the tasting of the corn to see if it was good enough for the dinner. Dayten Wittenburg and the Grump participated in the Bremer County Fair by donating pies for the auction as a fundraiser for the new fair grounds. It was a lot of fun, and I thank Mayor Dan Wedemeier for his generosity of buying my pie. The summer is almost gone school starting, sporting events to attend, State Fair, Farm Progress Show, Cattle Congress, and soon the harvest will begin. This is a little advice to everyone, especially for myself. Don t try to get everything done in one day. Enjoy life and live it to the fullest. Summertime passes by so fast! I think that is why the old saying, Time goes by when you are having fun proves true over and over! This month lead me to Tripoli and Denver Days Parades as Miss Readlyn! It is so beautiful to see so many people with their families and the pride in our local communities! What a wonderful experience! August is welcoming school and athletes back in season. I m very excited for our senior class and how we will finish our careers representing Wapsie Valley. The football team will be in full action on Friday nights. Mr. (Tony) Foster, a long-time football coach, starts off with their season opener on Friday, August 26 at Upper Iowa against South Winneshiek. Cross Country Track usually runs on Tuesdays with their first meet at Oelwein on Tuesday, August 30 at 4:30 pm. I m on the Wapsie Valley Volleyball Team and I am really looking forward to an awesome season of volleyball with a great group of ladies! Our very own Miss (Alyssa) Wittenburg is the head coach this season and we are excited to start something special with her leading our team. Our assistant coaches are Mrs. (Brenda) Roberts and Miss (Taylor) Roberts. Our games are usually on Tuesdays and Thursdays with Saturday tournaments. Our first games are on August 30 with varsity playing at Oelwein and JV playing at West Central. Both games begin at 6:00 p.m. All of our current athletes would love to see a lot of community support at any of our games. No matter if you ve been to a cross country meet, football game, or volleyball matches for a while, come out to Wapsie Valley High School and take in a game. It is also that time of year that school is starting back up again and schedules begin to fill up. I m learning there is more to being a senior then I thought. Between senior pictures, scholarships, college visits and final selections, I m realizing there are a lot of important life decisions to be made. I am definitely looking forward this busy senior year. Between sports, FFA, 4-H, and school I m realizing how fast life goes by. I remember my first days of our freshman year wishing that I was a senior. Now that those years have flown by, I m so excited to make these days count. I m really looking forward to making lasting memories this year! It makes me realize we have some very great teachers, coaches, and mentors all around us. I can definitely say that I would not be where I am without the support of my family, friends, and community! THANKS for making Wapsie GREAT! Attendees enjoyed donut holes and coffee at 10:30 am. A mini-church service was led by Steve and Sherri Pavelec. At noon was a potluck dinner with 57 attending from Waverly, Oelwein, Hot Springs Village, AR, Cedar Falls, West Allis, WI, St. Paul, MN, Lake Mary, FL, Janesville, New Hartford, Madison, WI, Readlyn, Marietta, GA, Tripoli, Waterloo, Seymour, MO, and Denver. The oldest member present was Verdeen Pavelec, 81, of Readlyn and the youngest there were Roman, 2-month-old son of Edward and Bridget Pavelec of Denver and Elijah, 2-1/2-month-old son of Craig and Jamie Pavelec of Tripoli. Traveling the longest distance was Randa King from Lake Mary, FL. Steve Pavelec of New Harford and Willard Mohling of Denver won the Bean Bag tournament. Bob Thiele of Waterloo and Willard Mohling of Denver won the golf tournament at the Waverly Municipal Golf Course on Saturday. Friday night was Mexican night hosted by the family of Virgil and Marlene Fasse of Waverly, who were hosts for the reunion. After graduation she hopes to pursue a career that involves helping others. Winning the title of Bremer County Fair Queen 2016 was Emilie Spratt of Waverly. Auto Judisch family reunion The Robert and Viola Judisch family members got together, along with cousins and friends, July 31, 2016, at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church for a 12:30 p.m. dinner hosted by David and Gail Judisch of Decorah, at which David introduced everyone. What Do You Do With An Idea? is written in the same vein and inspires one who s ever had an idea too big, too odd, or too difficult, to welcome that idea, to give it some space to grow, and to see what happens next. These are two beautifully illustrated books. Just in time for fall and Halloween we have a new Bad Kitty Scaredy Cat from Nick Bruel. In this spookily hilarious picture book she s up against something more frightening than Puppy s slobber: Halloween! The Graduation of Jake Moon by Barbara Park is a fictional depiction that addresses the effects of Alzheimer s disease on younger family members. Jake Moon used to love the time he spent with his grandfather, Skelly, but that was before Skelly got Alzheimer s disease. All of a sudden it s as if Skelly is the kid and Jake has to be the grown-up. Much of Skelly s care becomes Jake s responsibility and that doesn t leave much time for a life of his own. Students and their families were treated to lunch and a facility tour in recognition of their outstanding academic achievements. Auxiliary meeting The Auxiliary to the Wayne Teisinger V.F.W. Post #5661 met August 9, 2016, 7:30 p.m. in the Readlyn Community Library meeting room with six members present. The minutes and treasurer's reports were read and accepted. A bill was paid. A motion was made by Darlene Peters and seconded by Wilda Albrecht to pay the bill. General Orders and Chairmen Reports were read by all. Volunteer hours were turned in. Twenty Campbell Soup labels were mailed to the National Home in Michigan. Thirty-eight Box Tops for Education were given to the school. 5,449 canceled stamps were mailed to Southern Arizona VA Healthcare System to Maurice Storck. New business: a thank you was read from Delores Sauerbrei. The 3rd District Meeting will be at #4868 Clear Lake, IA on September 10, The 3rd District President, Deloris Clayton, will come to our next meeting September 13, 2016, to inspect the books at 7:00 p.m. A motion by Wilda Albrecht and seconded by Marrillee Tiedt was made to adjourn. Carried. Closed with prayer. Hostess was Lorraine Macken. The Readlyn High School Graduating Class of 1956 met at the Readlyn Community Library on June 17 celebrating 60 years. There were fifteen class members present with nine guests. It was decided that different brands and varieties of seed corn would be planted and compared, rather than planting a field of just one brand. The chapter received seed donations from various donors, and also received fertilizer, lime, and other chemicals from donors as well. The plot is managed by Wapsie FFA members Bryce Kleitsch, Conner Jones, Landen Kuhlmann and Carson Woods. Oran Mutual Telephone makes major contribution, secures grant for Wapsie Valley Greenhouse Remodel By Natalie Risse, Chapter Reporter The Friends of the Wapsie Valley FFA received a $10,000 donation from the Oran Mutual Telephone Company, (OMTC), to aid in the large remodel of Wapsie Valley FFA s greenhouse. In addition to this gracious contribution, the OMTC sponsored the Friends of the Wapsie Valley FFA so they could apply for the Aureon Charity Grant. The Aureon Charity Grant is awarded to projects committed to the betterment of local Iowan communities. Aureon is the new name for the Iowa Network Services that created the grant program in 1993 to increase service and support to rural independent telecommunications companies and the communities they serve. The Aureon Charity Grant is awarded quarterly, and over the course of of twelve years, Aureon has donated over $850,000 to local communities and surrounding areas. The Friends of the Wapsie Valley FFA received $500 from this grant. With the combination of the generous donation and the grant received, the Friends of the Wapsie Valley FFA gained a large percentage of the money that was needed to begin this project. 12 Page 12 Readlyn Chronicle Wednesday, August 31, 2016 Pearls of Wisdom By Pastor Mark Lund St. Matthew Lutheran Church and Zion Lutheran Church Unless you ve been hiding under a rock for the last few weeks, you probably watched a fair amount of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. I am always amazed at how talented the athletes are. But, I m just as impressed by their dedication. The fact is, you can be the most talented athlete in the world, but if you don t do anything with your talent you re simply not going to go very far. Michael Phelps is a good example of an athlete who is both talented and dedicated. He certainly has some anatomical characteristics that give him an advantage in the pool. But, he is also remarkably dedicated. His training regimen for the Beijing Olympics was the stuff of legend. He reportedly trained for 5-6 hours per day, 6 days a week. In order to train that hard, he ate about 12,000 calories a day. The end result was a record 8 Gold Medals in a single Olympics, a feat that will likely not be matched for some time, if ever. Or, take gymnast Alex Naddour, who had London tattooed on his arm as a daily reminder that he was only able to attend the 2012 games as an alternate. In Rio, he not only qualified, but won the Bronze in Pommel Horse, the first medal for the U.S. in the event in 32 years. These kinds of stories aren t particularly unique. Every Olympic athlete has them. It simply goes with the territory when you re going for the Gold. Living as a Christian in this world is similar in many ways, in that it also requires dedication and endurance. We read in Hebrews 12:1-2, Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes upon Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. It is extremely important for us to understand that Jesus Christ alone gets all the glory for our salvation. He alone is worthy of all praise. Although He calls on us to endure and to persevere to the end, He is the One who gives us the strength to do so (Jude 1:24-25). He is the author and perfecter of our faith, not us. We look to Him alone, for He alone has reconciled us to the Father by redeeming us with His holy and precious blood and innocent suffering and death. St. Paul writes, The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs-- heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him (Romans 8:16-17). Despite what we might have to suffer in this life in order to remain faithful to Christ and His Word, it will be well worth it. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us (Romans 8:18). A Gold Medal would be wonderful, but living for eternity in a city with golden streets will be way better (Revelation 21). It ll make all the Gold Medals in the world pale in comparison. After all, you can t take a Gold Medal with you, but the Lord Jesus will never leave you. And, that s the true reward. Spending eternity with Jesus, the One in whom there is true life, joy, and peace.
