1 Summer 2009 Issue 2 Letter from the Program Chair 4 BYU has Multiple Wins at ASC Competition 10 Annual CM Fly Fishing Reunion Brigham Young University Construction Management The Fulton College of Engineering and Technology CM Students Win Numerous Awards BYU s NAHB Team Takes First The NAHB Team placed first in the International Building Show Competition held this year in Las Vegas, Nevada. They had a challenging townhome project that dealt with the current construction downturn coupled with steep competition from other universities. It was a daunting task, however they prevailed with a well deserved first place win. See page 3 for more details. ASC also performed very well, with three of their teams placing. The ASC Risk Management team brought home a first place; LEED and Design Build both received second place. The ABC team put in a lot of hard work and took third in the safety category and third in the overall competition. For more about ASC and ABC competitions, see pages 4 and
2 LETTER FROM THE PROGRAM CHAIR KEVIN R. MILLER Another great year has transpired for the Construction Management Program; the first alumni dinner was held, the students performed well in the student competitions, and our graduates are still finding jobs. Additionally, we have made changes in the undergraduate and graduate programs that will strengthen each degree. In October we had our first annual alumni dinner. Jared Doxey was our keynote speaker; he talked about the church s worldwide building program. Everyone in attendance was fascinated by the presentation. The entertainment was provided by a campus singing group called Vocal Point. Although the presentation and entertainment were great, the real highlight of the evening was being able to get reacquainted with each other as CM Program graduates. Everyone enjoyed the mixer time prior to the program and requested that this year the mixer time be a little longer. For 2009, the alumni dinner will be held on Thursday, November 5. The keynote speaker will be Alan S. Layton, President of Layton Construction. He will be talking about the church s reconstruction efforts in Peru that followed the 2007 earthquakes. For about the last 10 years, we have hosted a student competition on campus called the Mock Bid. This competition is similar to the ASC or the ABC student competitions. Each year students from the construction management programs throughout the state are invited to compete. The competition typically includes a commercial project where the students estimate, schedule, develop a project management plan, and present their solutions. This year, the presentations will be November 6, If you would like to attend the presentations, please me at kmiller@byu.edu so I can accommodate those wanting to attend. This is a great event for you to see potential employees in action. This year BYU s Construction Management Program sent 13 different teams to various student competitions across the country. Each team did a wonderful job on their project and should be commended for their efforts. The student competitions are a wonderful educational experience for the students. Each student contributed towards the expenses to attend the competitions. The contributions of several companies and alumni made it possible for many students to compete; we thank you for your continued support. Look for the student competition articles on pages 3-5 for the details. If you would like to make a donation to the program, you can visit and click on the Donating link, followed by the Donate Online link. One hundred percent of all contributions made through this system go directly to the Construction Management Program. The university has approved new curriculum changes for the undergraduate program. The civil engineering statics course and two half-credit semesters of CM 291R Seminar were removed from the requirements for the program. In place of these credits a BIM/Sustainable Building class was added. The university also approved changes for the graduate program. Read more about these changes on page 6 and 7. Many alumni have inquired about our current student placement rate. The placement for December 2008 graduates is 94%. We are still gathering the data for April but it appears that it will be around 70%. If you know of any CM job openings, please go to our website (www. byucm.org) select the Industry/Employers link followed by the Post a Job or Internship link and let everyone know of the opportunity. On this portion of the website, part-time, full-time, or alumni jobs can be posted. On another note, Mark Hutchings led the effort for the CM alumni fly-fishing trip to Island Park, Idaho last fall. He is planning another alumni fly-fishing trip this year. For more details, and information on how to reserve your slot on the trip, look on pages 10 and 11. I would like to thank each of you for your support and for representing BYU and its unique mission so well. As a faculty, we love to hear how each of you are doing, so when you have a spare minute, us and update us on what has transpired in your life since graduation. Sincerely, Kevin R. Miller Construction Management Program Chair 2
3 New CMSA Presidency Intends to Make Changes Beginning Fall 2009 a new CMSA Presidency will help roll in the new school year. New CMSA presidency members include David Goodsell, president; Andrew Jennings, 1st VP; Nathan Demary, 2nd VP; Riley Plumb, secretary; Kade Butterfield, treasurer; and Thomas Unga, historian. The group formed their team and their plan of action on a returning trip from the ASC competitions. David said, We felt like if we wanted to make a difference, this was our chance. The biggest change they would like to see is better communication within the program, between the CMSA Presidency and the students of the Construction Management program. The new presidency has already improved communication by implementing a new address where they can be reached cmsabyu@gmail.com. They also aim to help better prepare competition teams in the various competitions an activity that several members of the new CMSA presidency participated in this last spring. In photo: BYU NAHB with BYU-I NAHB team, winners of the 2 year competition. BYU s NAHB Team Takes First in National Competition Brigham Young University Construction Management students took first place in the National Association of Home Builder s competition at this year s NAHB International Builder s Show. The NAHB competition provides university level competition teams around the country with a set of construction documents and a specific problem. This year s problem involved a set of 34 townhomes located in San Antonio, Texas. After four months of preparation, teams came from 38 universities across the country. On January 21 BYU team members Chris Leavitt, Cody Andreasen, John Cody Allen, Jonathan Hastings, Joseph Layne and Russell Van Wagenen presented their comprehensive solution to the judging panel. The team spent an estimated 1,000 man-hours preparing. As part of their preparation, three of the team members and their coach, Brian Capt, visited the Silverado Hills project in San Antonio, Texas. Finding a solution to the project required students to have extensive understanding of finance, land development, scheduling, project management, estimating, and marketing. According to Capt, The NAHB competition requires a comprehensive proposal rather than just a construction only proposal the students have got to focus to create the kind of solution the judges are looking for. This year, BYU s team motto was FIT, which stands for Flexibility, Innovation and Target Marketing. They incorporated this motto by proposing townhome plans with dimensional areas that could be interchanged with alternate floor plans. As for marketing, FIT was also their company slogan. The greatest difficulty that we had was that it s just a tough market right now. One solution we came up with was to target active and retired military because they have access to VA loans There are a lot of military [personnel] in San Antonio, said Jonathan Hastings, NAHB team member. BYU CM students have participated in the NAHB competition since 1990 and have placed nearly every year of their involvement. This year, they were honored to receive first place. 3

BYU s Construction Management Program sent 11 teams to the ASC competitions this year. The teams competed in the categories of: Mechanical, Risk, LEED, Commercial, Residential, Marine, Heavy Civil, Design Build (DB), Pre-construction, Building Information Modeling (BIM), and Electrical. BYU placed in two of the national competitions receiving first place in Risk Management and second place in the LEED competition. The BYU Design Build placed second for Region 6. Each competition was a challenge and a growing experience for the students. The teams spent months in preparation, beginning midway into the Fall 2008 semester. All the competitions involved complex problems that were to be completed in hours, followed by a team presentation the next day. All the student competitions provide students with a setting where they can apply what they have learned in the classroom and focus it into a specific project. The Risk Management team received first place. This is the first year the risk management problem has been available at the ASC competition. The problem statement spanned the entire duration of the construction project. During the course of the competition, the team continuously encountered and had to resolve problems that typically arise during the course of construction. The team members included: David Whitaker, Kraig Olsen, Kyle Nelson, L. James Hendrick, In photo: James Hendrick working during competition. 4

In the LEED competition, the team consulted for a big box retailer that was looking to go green. This year s LEED problem was more challenging then in past years. The problem statement involved using the new LEED rating system, scheduling, and compiling an estimate for the store s mechanical system. Team members The LEED team after the awards ceremony: Jeremy Kuhre, included: David Robinaugh, Jamie Maloney, Jeremy Kuhre, Beau Beau McDonald, Jamie Maloney, David Robinaugh, Daniel McDonald, Tyson Williamson, Daniel Sloan and Andrew Lynes. Sloan, Tyson Williamson, and Andrew Lynes In the Design Build competition the team was required to submit a quality control plan, a safety plan, a schedule, and a completed estimate for the project. The project included a 90,000 SF cancer treatment center with an adjoining 130,000 SF medical office building. The team also created a rendering of the facilities for the submission. DB team members include: Brandon Miller, Easton Hamblin, Hannah Woosley, Hyrum Pitt, Scot Clark, Seth Oxborrow and Caleb Stones. ABC Team Places at Competition This year s ABC team travelled to Hawaii to be judged on the presentation of their estimate, project management, and safety management plans. The team, consisting of Davis Erickson, Matt Vaughn, Matt Kynaston, Ryan Facer, John McVey, and alternate Spencer Hutchings, received the competition problem in mid January. In all, they put in roughly 700 man-hours of preparation during the six weeks prior to the presentation. The team was required to develop a site-specific safety and management plan for a pedestrian bridge, which connects a parking lot and an observation deck located in Montgomery, Alabama. In all, the team placed in the safety category and third place overall in the competition. In Photo: Davis Erickson, Matt Vaughn, John McVey, Ryan Facer, and Spencer Hutchings 5
6 What s New at BYU CM? Changes Made to CM Graduate Program Starting in the academic year, all prospective CM graduate students must have a construction management undergraduate degree or a construction industry-related bachelor s degree with significant industry experience. These changes represent our continued efforts to improve the Construction Management Graduate Program, says Mark Hutchings, Graduate Program Coordinator. Especially in today s economic conditions, we want to equip our students with all the tools they need to succeed. Two classes have also been added to the graduate program curriculum: CM 545 and CM 626. CM 545 focuses on construction finance. CM 626 focuses on real estate development. With the changes that have been made it is anticipated that a determined, fulltime student could complete the degree in one calendar year. For more information on BYU s Construction Management Graduate Program, including entrance and coursework requirements, visit the program website at BYU CM Gets a New Faculty Member Mark Lords The school year was marked with several changes to the CM Program. Mark Lords joined the CM faculty during the Fall 2008 semester. When asked why he chose to come teach at BYU he said, I have always wanted to come back to BYU to teach... it has always been a goal of mine. Lords is no stranger to BYU he graduated from BYU in 1980 with a master s in accounting. Since that time Lords has spent more than 25 years working as a land developer and builder in Colorado and Vermont, while successfully operating two companies. He has also received numerous awards. In 1998 we was named Vermont Home Builder of the Year and his company was named America s Best Builder by the NAHB in Mark just returned from presiding over the Tennessee, Nashville mission. He is also an avid skier. Mark Lords is currently teaching the project management and company management classes. Starting this fall, he will also teach the CM 545 class. He would like to see the program implement a mentoring program for students to be paired with and guided by an industry professional during their coursework in the student s area of interest. He also emphasized the importance and need for students to complete an internship to help prepare them to enter the industry. 6
7 Statics and Structures Class to Merge This fall, the CM Program is adding a new class to replace the original statics and structures courses. The new class combines the old statics and structures courses into a new structures class. Ron Dunn, owner of Dunn & Associates based in Salt Lake City, Utah, will be teaching the new course. These changes create a focused class that pertains more to the needs of our graduates, says CM Program Chair Kevin Miller. The class focuses on construction application of engineering principles. BIM/Sustainable Building Class Is Added to Regular Curriculum As of Fall 2009, BYU s CM Program will incorporate the BIM/Sustainable Building class into its official curriculum. The class, which has been taught as a special problems course, started last year when CM faculty members enlisted students participating in the Sustainable Building & Design Club to help create the curriculum and select a textbook for the course. The development of the curriculum and assignments was lead by a faculty/student team during the Spring 2008 semester, says teaching assistant Jeremy Kuhre. About 12 students and Professor Kevin Burr conducted research, chose a textbook, formed lectures, and created assignments. The students and professor continue to refine the class and its curriculum. Through this experience, the students learned how to create a successful class and work on a team project. This process was invaluable as it saved costs, required input from industry professionals, and trained the future professor and teacher s assistants, Kuhre says. The CM Program is always working to improve our curriculum for our students, says Kevin Miller. Students Develop LEED Study Sessions CM students have a strong desire to excel and help others at the same time. One example of this is that, since the Fall 2008 semester, several students involved with the Sustainable Build and Design Club have spear-headed efforts to help fellow CM students become LEED accredited. The study sessions have been held on Saturdays for the last two semesters in B-66, from 8 10am. The study sessions were developed to highlight the various categories of the LEED rating system. 10 4th Annual CM Fly Fishing Reunion It s time to start planning for Hutch s 4th Annual CM Fly-Fishing Reunion to be held September 17, 18, and 19 (two nights; three days). This year we will be fishing on the LC Ranch, a private flyfishing destination about two hours east of Provo. There are several species of trout to be caught, and I ve had reports from several friends who have fished the lakes that there are some big fish. Lodging and catered meals will be provided, along with one fly-fishing guide for every six fishermen. In addition to fishing and tying flies, we will plan to have some evening get-togethers with guest speakers and should have a great time. This trip should be a lot of fun. I m looking forward to it. September fishing in Utah can be very exciting. Remember, the weather is unpredictable at that time of year, so plan accordingly. For more information on the LC ranch, see their website at Total cost for the two nights and three days of lodging, food, guides, and fishing will be $295 per person. This does not include modest tips for the guides. There are a limited number of slots available for this reunion, so reservations will be on a first-come, first-served basis, with a non-refundable deposit of $125 per person required immediately. Also, if you want to bring your spouse, there are several rooms available with private bathrooms. Anything over and above our actual costs will go into a scholarship fund for CM students. For those who want to start fishing a day early, some of us will be going out on Wednesday, September 16. The cost for this extra day of lodging, food and guides will be somewhere between $100 and $150. This option will be available until approximately two weeks prior to September 17. Also, for those who want to carpool from Salt Lake or Provo, a list of attendees will be developed as soon as we know who is coming. In order to reserve your slot, go to cm2009flyfishing.aa.byu.edu and use your credit card to pay your $125 deposit. The total cost of $295 must be paid in full by August 31. There is a 3% fee for credit cards.
11 By Mark Hutchings As an added incentive, tickets to the BYU/ Florida State football game on Saturday, September 19 will be available. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. If you sign up for the reunion and want to purchase tickets to the football game, please contact me at mark_hutchings@byu.edu or by phone at (801) By the way, for those die-hard Island Park/Yellowstone fly-fishing enthusiasts and I include myself in that group I can still reserve our beautiful cabin in Island Park for an additional fly-fishing outing if there is enough interest. If we have at least ten persons, the cost for that trip will be about the same as last year approximately $200 each for food, three nights at the cabin and four days of fishing (Wednesday through Saturday). I would be happy to plan for a summer trip in July or August or for a late fall trip (after the LC Ranch outing), but I would need In photo: Mark Lord and Mark Hutchings some help with logistical details if we have a group that wants to go. Once again, there are private bedrooms for those who want to bring their spouse. We ve had three great trips in a row to Island Park, but it is a 5 1/2-hour drive from Provo. That s one of the reasons we are planning to try the LC Ranch this fall. I m looking forward to seeing you again. Start tying flies. 4th Annual CM Fly Fishing Reunion When: September 17-19, 2009 Where: LC Ranch, Altamont, UT Cost: $295 Per Person Contact: Mark Hutchings OR
