1 Society Participates in Henrico County War of 1812 Road Sign Unveiling Sep 13, 2015 On September 13, 2015, three members of our society participated in the Henrico County historical road sign unveiling ceremony conducted inside the Antioch Baptist Church in Sandston. The ceremony was incorporated into a meeting of the Henrico County Historical Society which was also attended by members of the county supervisors. The county band played and the Varina High School Navy, ROTC presented the colors. Attending from the Society of the War of 1812 in the Commonwealth of Virginia were Stuart Butler, author, historian and society councilor, Chuck Poland, society registrar, and Mike Lyman, society past president. Butler talked about the war and how the camps along the James River played an important role in protecting Richmond from attack. Lyman talked about the 33 rd militia regiment of the county and where some of the men were locally buried. All three members of the society unveiled the sign. Poland and Lyman presented the society wreath and Butler the Bicentennial Commission s wreath. The sign will be placed by VDOT on Route 5 in the county ¼ miles west of the Turner Road intersection. See black mark on a map below: To follow are photos of both sides of the sign as each have different text

Also, some men from the county may have joined the Regular Army or Virginia Navy instead of the militia. Thus, the totals of men serving from the county in the war of 1812 is much more than that listed.
