What s Love Got to do With It was a R&B song popularized by Tina Turner in Within this song Ms. Turner asks some probing questions and makes at least one startling statement: She asks: What s love got to do with it: seeming to indicate that it has very little to do with anything. Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken? Seeming to indicate that emotions of the heart are really not needed and loving is not worth the risk. She declares: What s love but a second-hand emotion: here she declares that love is an inferior emotion beneath others. As those who have fallen in love with God as revealed in Jesus, as those who have embraced God s deep love for us, and as those who have committed ourselves to extend his love to each other and the world, we reject this song in its entirety. We proclaim with the Apostle Paul as he writes his first letter to the Corinthians that love has everything to with it, and it is the highest and most enduring of all emotions. As God s people we desire to be a spiritual family, creating a culture of belonging. As the family of God at Floyd Baptist we desire to invite all to come and experience God s love in this family. To do that we must understand and embrace the value of love, know what love is and know what love is not. In I Corinthians 13 Paul gives a beautiful exposition on love to the people of Corinth. He does so because they seem to be struggling with exactly how to be a loving family to each other and the world. I invite you to join me this June as we learn crucial lessons about love and discover exactly, What s Love Got to Do With It? The format will be determined by those who sign up each week. If we have any newbies then we will play Captains Choice so that they will only hit the shots they want to hit even if it means they only putt. How to participate: Let Pastor Jeff or the Church Office know by Thursday at 12:00 Noon if you are going to play that week. Show up at the golf course ready to play by 5:00 PM on Friday. We need to know by each Thursday so that we can make Tee Times. 6 A brief thank you to all of you in the Floyd Baptist Church family. Your faithful support of Floyd Young Life and WyldLife (pre-teens) has helped to reach lost and at-risk local kids and giving them the opportunity to hear the good news of Jesus and a God who loves them. Using the Wood s building for Club is such a blessing. Thank you for your love for all kids. Joanne Sholar - FYL Committee Dear Friends, Thank you so much for the box of treats (May Baskets). Thank you to Pastor Jeff for making the trip to visit him in the hospital at Galax. Thank you to Pastor Jeff and those of you who made the trip to Galax to attend the visitation and funeral. Thanks to the L.I.F.E. Sunday School class for the dish garden that was at the visitation and the service. The cards and sincere prayers are appreciated. 8 Operation In As Much OIAM What it is---oiam is another opportunity for us to reach out into our community and share God s love. It is a special day where you are able to choose from a variety of ministry projects and help others in your local community. Date---August 18 th, 2018 (Rain Date September 8 th, 2018) Opportunities To Serve--- *** Free For All Yard Sale Team---helps gather and prepare items for a yard sale where everything is free, assists visitors at this sale, cleans up after the sale. ***Cookies/Card Ministry Team---delivers cookies to local fire, rescue, sheriff offices, nursing home and library staffs, etc; writes and sends notes to military personnel, veterans, and others whose names are submitted. ***Firewood Delivery Team---splits and delivers firewood to folks in the community who need it. ***Nursing Home Team---visits the nursing home, spends time with residents, plans and helps with a music program for residents, may give out toiletry items or other handmade items. ***Large and Small Projects Teams---in the past these teams have completed a variety of activities including---weed eating, cleaning houses and yards, trimming brush, working on porches, decks, doors, and windows, ***Meal Preparation Team---prepares lunches for workers at the church; prepares and delivers bag lunches to those working in areas away from the church. What You Can Do Now--- ***Begin dropping off items for Free For All Yard Sale at the church. ***Be in prayer about this ministry as well as where God is leading you to serve on this day. Signup sheets will be posted at the beginning of June. ***If you would like to order an OIAM shirt, please let Peggy Profitt know by June 15 th, as these will need to be ordered. Matthew 25:40.The King will reply, I tell you the truth, inasmuch as you have done such things for the least of my brothers and sisters, you have done the same for me. 9 continued from page 8 Food Drive Please help us with our collection of food items for the local food bank The theme for June is: Peanut Butter, Jelly & Crackers Please drop off your donations by June 30 in the box outside the Fellowship Hall In May, 31 items were collected. OIAM NURSING HOME PROJECT The Skyline Nursing Home OIAM Team would like to present gifts to the residents on August 18. Donated items would be greatly appreciated and may be given to Brenda Wood, Ruby Moran or Connie Quesenberry. Needed items: Purse-size tissues, deodorants, hypoallergenic body wash, hypoallergenic shampoo If you would like to serve with this team, please contact Connie Q. EVANGELISM & MISSIONS COMMITTEE MEETING Sunday, June 24th at 8:45 am in the Fellowship Hall. All OIAM Team Leaders are invited to attend. Operation Christmas Child. Each month the Youth will be collecting an item that will be used in filling the shoeboxes in November for Operation Christmas Child. So far, bar soap, tooth brushes, small toys, & plastic items have been collected In June, socks will be collected. With your donations the youth will be able to purchase extra things with the money they are provided. Please place your donations in the box located in the Sanctuary. Thank You! VBS 2018 June VBS: Join us for a fun filled week as we Gear Up For Life s Big Game Dinner will be served for the workers each night at 5:30pm VBS begins at 6:30pm Please invite anyone ages 3-7 th Grade Our mission project this year is nonperishable food items and school supplies.
