Keene collects sgnatures, starts applcaton process BY BRAD TAYLOR Edtoral Edtor Mark Keene announced on Sunday that he has collected more than the requred number of sgnatures needed to begn the applcaton process for a Democrats Club at Lberty Unversty. Keene, a sophomore from St. Petersburg, Fla., has been attemptng to formulate a Democrats club for the past few weeks. " am very pleased wth the response have had so far," Keene Dorm 31 s ready for use BY ROBERT PTTS Specal to The Champon Wth dorm 31 now ready for occupancy, workcrews are beng shfted to contnue buldng the remanng three dorms, Bob Leach, part owner of Robnson Constructon Company n Blacksburg, sad Frday. "t sounds lke we're gettng closer," Leach sad. " would say the next buldng wll be ready n a couple of weeks." Leach referred to dorm 32, whch stll needs work on the carpetng, pantng and plumbng. Dorm 33 should be ready three to four weeks after dorm 32 s complete, Leach sad, wth dorm 34 beng ready three to four weeks after dorm 33 s fnshed. Each dorm s worth about $800,000, Leach sad. The bulder sad the rock that workers ht whle tryng to fnsh the sewer lnes has been a major factor n the delay. "That's been a holdup for at least two to three weeks," Leach sad. "t's cost the unversty money 'm sure - a consderable amount," Leach added. "The drllng under the ralroad track was probably eght to 10 tmes as expensve as f we ddn't ht rock. t's cost everybody." Work left to be done on dorm 33 ncludes "drywallng" part of the contnued on page 6 sad. To petton for a campus club, The Lberty Way states that one must collect at least 25 sgnatures before the Student Government and unversty admnstraton wll consder gvng a club offcal unversty club status. Keene has collected more than 120 sgnatures n support of a Democrats Club. Keene sad that more than 30 of those that sgned the petton are "serous about jonng" the proposed club. ncluded n the supportve sgnatures are Jm Lumley, Charman of the LU chapter of College Republcans and CR Vce Charman Anthony Perrone. Perrone sad that he sgned the petton because he wants to see "poltcal pluralsm on campus." Keene sad that whle he s encouraged by the support he has receved durng hs recrutng drve, he has receved several negatve reactons n response to hs efforts. Staff Photo by Donald W. He also sad that he has repeatedly told students that whle he s a Democrat, he does not support the canddacy of Mchael Dukaks. He even posted a sgn at hs table readng, "No, do not support Mke Dukaks." The hosts of the evenng were the comedy duo of Stephen Hcks and Jerry Cohagan. They kept the audence thoroughly entertaned wth ther snappy jokes and refreshng humor. The 24 contestants paraded the stage n ther color-coordnated outfts to the theme song of the nght, "Shne Down." All the contestants had been ntervewed and selected by the judges several weeks pror to the pageant Su Yong Park was pronounced Mss Congenalty, an honor voted on by all the contestants before the pageant Alberta Couthen Stewart, the 1987 Mss Lberty, presented a farewell speech. "'m sad, but not very sad... as now another young lady-has the opportunty to be Mss Lberty," she sad. She followed her address wth a beautfully sung rendton of "One Moment n Tme." The lades, dressed n evenng gowns, were ndvdually escorted around the stage by Unted States Marnes. Stewart descrbed the contestants' gowns, whch ranged from gltterng sequens to black ftted velvet, as they paraded the stage. The ten sem-fnalsts were announced. Those selected were Jule Ann Harbot, Kmberly Rachelle Harrs, Lsa Eleyna Holy, Amy Elzabeth Hubbard, Lara Lee Leonard, Susan Dane Matherly, Su Yong Park, Jule Ann Schwaderer, Justne Elzabeth Thyret and Kathryn Mchelle Tomlnson. The LBN sngers and orchestra provded muscal entertanment for the evenng. Dr. A. Perre Gullermn announced the fve fnalsts. They were Amy Hubbard, Lara Leonard, Jule Harbot, Lsa Holy and Km Harrs. STANTON Edtor ' Jule Ann Harbot was nervous on Frday nght She wasn't worred about beng named "Mss Lberty," though. She was worred about beng a "klutz." "The thng that was most nervous about was the choreography," Harbot sad. "'m such a klutz. And goofed. made a mstakerghtn front of everyone." That was the only goof she made, though. Harbot was named Mss Lberty for 1988 even though she ddn't expect to make thefrst cut " thought that wouldn't be one of the top 10," Harbot, a senor Broadcast-Journalsm major from Wllamsport, Penn., sad. "When they called my name frst, was totally amazed." After makng the fnal 10, Harbot was even more surprsed to make thefnalfve. " ddn't expect to make the top fve ether," she sad. " just kept watng and sayng, 'They'll call my name next'" Fnally, t came down to Harbot and Amy Hubbard. "When t was just me and Amy, really beleved that God wanted Amy to be Mss Lberty," Harbot sad. But Hubbard was named frst runner-up, leavng Harbot alone n the spotlght. " was so amazed," Harbot sad. " Jule Harbot ddn't feel that was even worthy of beng n the pageant. t s such a responsblty and an honor to be Mss Lberty. " ddn't even know how to wave. 'm stll tryng to sort t all out." Harbot knew what to do before the pageant, though. She spent some tme alone wth God. " spent an hour and a half before the pageant by myself n my room," she sad. "God and spoke durng that tme. sad that would do my best and glorfy Hm n everythng that dd." n some ways, Harbot was lvng out a chldhood dream wth her partcpaton n the pageant " used to watch all of the pageants on TV when was a chld," she sad. "When was out there, all could say was, 'Thank you, Jesus, for a great tme.'" Harrs culmnates Homecomng week BY MEGAN BEARDER Copy Edtor The Homecomng Weekend culmnated Saturday nght wth a concert featurng the four-tme Grammy Award wnnng snger, Lamelle Harrs. Harrs began the nght on an upbeat note wth the famlar "A Mghty Fortress s our God." A colorful backdrop of lghts (the same setup used for the Mss Lberty Pageant) enhanced the settng. The songs "Happy Day" and "All n Favor Say " got the crowd to ts feet and clappng to the beat. t felt lke Chrstmas n October when Harrs sang two selectons from hs Chrstmas album. One would almost have expected to see snow fallng when lookng out the doors at that pont. Problems wth the sound system (most lkely a montor cord comng loose) forced Harrs to change hs plans a couple of tmes. n no way dd t affect the qualty of the presentaton. Harrs sad after the concert that he never has "thngs so well planned that the Holy Sprt can't work" and that sometmes God "uses equpment breakdowns to teach us somethng." Harrs used the opportuntes to share from hs heart There wasn't a band to back hm up, but Harrs' tremendous vocal ablty kept the crowd entertaned. He dd resort to the pano a couple oftmes, but t bascally served as a prop. Harrs chose to end the nght wth the spotlght completely focused on the Lord. He led the audence n the often tear-provokng song "Lord Love You" and exted the stage quetly at the end. The concert was what one made t to be. Those that came to prase the Lord were able to do so, abundantly. Those that came to be blessed were blessed. Those that just came to hear some beautful sngng heard t. n regard to hs concerts, Harrs sad, "What attempt to share s from the heart and s honest. want to be the same person on the stage as am [off the stage]." Tha's an awesome responsblty for any Chrstan snger. Many people look up to such ndvduals, often dolzng them. Harrs sad he recognzed that fact "t's an awesome responsblty, and don't take t lghtly. want to turn t [the admraton] where t belongs to the Lord. "'m just lke everybody else n that need that cleansng that only the Lord can do." m

The fall colors were at ther peak last weekend. So was student actvty at LU. Homecomng Week was nothng short of a smashng success. And even though the Flames football team fell n defeat to second-ranked Western llnos, the student body came out n full force to help set a new home attendance record of 11,400 at Saturday's game. But the tone for the weekend celebraton was set earler n the week. The chapel servces appeared to be full of sprt (both God's and de school's). Vernon Brewer even gave the student body a break durng Wednesday's chapel when he ended de servce at about 10:30, allowng many students to fellowshp or get some much needed rest after md-term week. On Wednesday, Coach Morgan Hout fred up de crowd and begged for student attendance and partcpaton at de game. Not even Dr. Jerry Falwell could nterrupt de speech. When Falwell extended hs wrst n front of Hout as a "your tme's up" gesture, Hout slapped down de arm of our beloved Chancellor. That nght, Jule Ann Harbot became de elevend "Mss Lberty." Larnelle J Harrs, who has one of de greatest sngng voces n de world, gave LU students, parents and alumn a great endng to a great week. What does beng sprtual mean to me? Reynard Valdez What does beng sprtual mean? That seems to be the buzzng queston on the Lberty Unversty campus recently. To be sprtual s to refran from evl thngs, not beng sensual. t pertans to the sprtual state that brngs purty of thought, mnd and heart, controlled and nspred by the dvne (Holy) Sprt. - Hstorcal Dgest: ra M.Prce, Unversty of Chcago. A person can not obtan sprtualty untl he or she has accepted Chrst as Lord and Savor. Sprtualty s the Holy Sprt's ndwellng resdence n a person's lfe.. Sprtualty s the nsurance one has to overcome the corruptng nfluences of carnal-mndedness. - The Master Bble. Actvty n Sprtual thngs should be brought about by the Chrstan's love and delght, wllngly. The Holy Sprt s the motvator for ths type of atttude whch allows a belever to gladly partcpate n mnstry wthout complant. The sprtual-mnded person greatly apprecates sprtual blessngs to pursue sprtual objectves, to be led by sprtual motves and n all respects, to allow "the temple of the purfed heart" to control and drect the lfe of a belever. An example of a sprtual objectve would be to evangelze the world as our Lord has commanded us to. "And he sad unto them, go ye nto all he world, and preach the gospel to every creature." - Mark 16:15 The most dffcult thng to do on ths campus s perhaps gettng others (belevers) to go soul wjnnng, yet they try to justfy ther type of sprtualty by the knd of: Chrstan musc one lstens to. Sprtual motves cover a broad range of what are we dong fo God or how wll ths beneft me? Many tmes people audtonng to be on mnstry teams or sng for a chapel servce do t wth the motve to become popular. Let's see what God's word says about dong works wth a wrong motve. "And whosoever shall exalt hmself shall be abased; and he that shall humble hmself shall be exalted." - Matthew 23:12. Phlppans 2:3 says "Let nothng be done n vanglory; but n lowlness of mnd let each esteem. other better than themselves." Beng a sprtual person nvolves respect to the ndwellng Holy Sprt, who can only operate n drectng and controllng our lves f we have a clean and purfed heart. Jesus sad that t s the Holy Sprt that testfes of Hm, and f that Sprt does not bear wtness of Hm then t s a wrong sprt. The atttude of just sayng "'m saved" has not excused us of our responsblty to be nvolved n mnstry. A Lberty professor announced to hs class that he would not eat any food for hs body untl he frst ndulged n the food for hs soul. Tme wth God, as Dr. Falwell says, can do wonders for your lfe, nstead of just pnchng at only the thngs you want done n regards to prayers. Sprtualty s more than a reputaton, but t encompasses how much one loves and delghts n the thngs of God. n pertanng to ths nsttuton, some thngs of God would nclude attentvely lstenng n chapel nstead of dong class assgnments, havng at least a halfhour or more n seekng God's face not ncludng your prayer lst and feedng daly on God's word by the chapters nstead of a promse verse a day. There s a whole realm of sprtualty that we all need to dscover; let's try and watch God transform our campus. Remember "God s a Sprt, and they that worshp Hm must do so n sprt and n truu," John 4:24. Reynard Valdez s the Relgon Edtor of The Champon. J ponr WAhJh)* WEAR -THAT OLD * BUT THE LYRCS WEAE CHRSTAN* EXCUSE AeVWN Pont: Chrstan 'metal' musc creates problems for Chrstan lfestyle Chrstan "metal" s probably not the best choce of musc. n a world that has fallen prey to a slanderous and stereotypcal mentalty, we as Chrstans must consder our every acton. Unfortunately, however, the "Me-sm" phlosophy of the 80's has domnated Chrstan ratonale. As a result, many belevers assocate themselves wth questonable.extremes of entertanment One extreme, n partcular, s Chrstan heavy metal. Although many wll scream and shout that musc s amoral (and they're rght), t s stll necessary to assume that ths world wll msunderstand the motves of such a lfestyle. As Chrstans, we must do everythng n our power to avod communcatng a compromsng fath. Many wll completely dsagree wth me, 'm sure. But we must forget about ourselves and consder the type of label that Chrstan metal s puttng on a HOLY, HOLY God. Furthermore, would lke to suggest that the Sprt of God does not automatcally convct a concert audence as the re- Scott DVlncenzo ~\ sut of someflp-flopsystem n creatvty. Whatdoesthsmean? Smply stated, one can not just combne Bble words wth a radcal lfestyle and conclude God's wll. Yes, am aware that young people lsten to all sorts of musc, especally heavy metal. Ths s all the reason more to gve them respectable role models, not fve loud, long-hared lunatcs n elastc pants. C'mon, Lberty. Remember now, people get saved because God s soveregn, not because some brllant person engneered a cute lttle technque. realze that we should use our magnaton for the cause of Chrst; but as Chrstans, we need to concentrate on removng saved and unsaved people out of carnal atmospheres. The whole pont of ths s to recognze that Chrstans should be more wllng to forfet ther lbertes for the sake of Jesus Chrst know that the apostle Paul sad that he would become all thngs to -all men that he mght wn some to Chrst; however, he never suggested that he would enjoy partakng of ther lfestyles. Paul also warned us to abstan from the appearanceofevl; and those crazy heavy metal concerts are just perfect examples of godlness, aren't they? As stated before, realze that musc s amoral. However, when there s an abundant selecton of muscal entertanment, why must we choose the most obscure? t s just slly to expect a revval among Chrstan people who are more concerned wth ther rghts rather than the cause of Chrst Scott DVncenzo s a staff columnst for The Champon. Counterpont: Chrstan 'metal' musc reaches certan groups People look at the clothes, har and sound of Chrstan metal muscans and automatcally assume the worst. However, do not see the Chrstan communty comng up wth anythng better to reach the youth of Amerca, t takes somethng that teenagers can relate to, such as heavy metal musc, before you can fll a stadum wth 10,000 non-chrstan head-bangers. You have to ht people where they lve, and n today's world teenagers lve wth musc. The Chrstan rock muscans are reachng young peoplesomethng that the majorty of Chrstans, ncludng myself, have faled mserably at dong. Yes, everyone wants to reach teenagers; but the Chrstan soluton to everythng seems to be, "Well why don't you come to church sometme." Of course, to come to church you must have new pants, new Barbara Guess shoes, new shrt and a good har cut. So, now we have nvted a teenager to church; and he wears the best outft he owns- - a par of jeans, a clean teeshrt and hs favorte earrng. Church day arrves and what happens? "Look at what just walked through the door, Oops, ddn't mean to turn around and stare." "OH, NO, Dd you see that har below the ears?" can not see a man wth a Mohawk to hs knees gettng overly anxous to lsten to a sermon on John 3:16. magne spendng an hour or more lookng up the noses of those lookng down at you. How long wll t be before you get the urge to go back to church? A rock concert s dfferent. The muscans look lke what s consdered to be normal, not lke they just stepped out of Sunday school. No one s worred about beng consdered a low-lfe. Does everyone who doesn't ft thestereotype of the conservatve, well-groomed Chrstan have a wld lfestyle. Who are we to say anythng, anyway? guarantee all Chrstan metal artst aren't out there for the Lord, but nether are all the preachers. Only God knows the hearts of men; and he s the one keepng score, not me. applaud those sncerely wllng to gve ther tme and talents for reachng the heavy metal teenagers because don't beleve that a Chrstaneesespeakng collegate preacher boy s gong to be able to relate to them. Barbara Guess s a staff columnst for The Champon. Vote Take nterest n poltcal processes Catherne Maentans As Chrstans, we want to elect leaders who we beleve are called by God. To do otherwse would be to relnqush our responsblty as the salt of the earth. But, n every electon year, why do we get otherwse? Why does the average Chrstan settle for Ungodly leadershp when he has the opportunty to shape Amerca's future for rghteousness? The reason s smple. Many of God's people have no nterest n the poltcal process. To them, votng s not consdered a prvlege, but rather a burden. t s somethng expected of them at least every four years. To prove ths, durng the past 10 natonal electons, only 30 to 50 percent of elgble voters went to the polls. And snce 1969, U. S. voter turnout became the world's lowest, averagng lower than 28 other natons. Ths s tragc consderng that 60 mllon Amercans or one-quarter of the U.S. populaton professes to be Bom agan Chrstans. Wth such a large segment of socety professng a fath n the God of the Bble, why does the majorty relnqush ts God-gven rght to govern by neglectng to vote? One soluton would be to make Chrstans realze that they are snnng aganst God when they neglect to vote. Dr. D. James Kennedy, pastor of oratrrdgerresbytertan errafth n Fort Lauderdale, Fla., puts t lke ths: " beleve t s a sn not to vote. Where does t say that n the Bble? Jesus sad, 'Gve to Caesar what s Caesar's'...That means we are to gve to the State whatever are our proper responsbltes as ctzens of that State. n ths naton, that certanly ncludes, at the very mnmum, our votes." f Chrstans realze that they have a moral oblgaton to socety and ther Creator to partcpate n the poltcal process, then maybe more wll take the challenge and vote ths Nov. 8. Once Chrstans accept ther responsblty and take an nterest n the ssues and canddates, we may see postve changes come about n our country. nstead of God thrown out of the publc forum, He may once agan be welcomed and revered as the one who bestowed upon us the lbertes we so chersh. Chrstans can make the dfference n ths country. Votng on Nov. 8 wll be a start. Catherne Maentans s a staff columnst for The Champon. 4 The Lberty Champon, Wednesday, Oct 26, 1988 page 3 Why on earth are we celebratng Halloween? Before we look at a Chrstan's nvolvement n Halloween, ths column must be prefaced. The Youthquest Club on ths campus and many other churches across Amerca use the Halloween atmosphere wthout the tradtonal Halloween symbols to reach the unsaved wth the gospel of Chrst. Ths column s rjo beng done n any way to dscredt that vtal' mnstry. n fact, ths column s to show Chrstans that to celebrate Halloween just to celebrate t shows a lack of convcton. Well, t s that tme of year agan. Everythng that goes bump n the nght comes out of the woodwork. Ths s done n that all sacred name, Halloween. Why do Chrstans celebrate ths Satanc holday? Please explan! f there s one "holday" that s to be hated, t s ths heretcal one! Let's take a walk back over 2,000 years and see where Halloween, also known as, All Souls Day, has ts foundaton. Halloween hstory goes back to the Celts of Great Brtan and France. They beleved n a sun god and every year he was taken prsoner by Samhan - also known as the "Lord of the Dead" and as the "Prnce of Darkness." They also beleved that wnter was a sgn of death and that Samhan brought the wnter. Every Oct. 31, Celtc prests, called Druds, would gather on a hll top, dress n long whte robes and dance around a fre. The Celts beleved evl sprts lurked everywhere and the fre was set up to throw anmals n t and to protect them from Samhan. Any evl sprt present would take the form of a cat. We ask you! s ths a holday that Chrstans should take part n? We are not talkng about fve, sx and seven year olds who go around ther neghborhood and collect candy from ther neghbors. We are talkng about crtcally-thnkng Chrstan young people who are supposed to know the dfference between rghteousness and wckedness! We don't go to a bar just because our unsaved frends want us to go there ( trust that s the overall feelng on ths campus). So, why on earth should we celebrate a day that Satan takes pleasure n, just to celebrate t! As Chrstans we are commanded to not be conformed to ths world (Rom 12:1-2). Also, we are commanded to be holy because Chrst s holy (1 Pet. 1:16). People...thnk! Use commonsense! Don't recognze a holday just because t happens to be on the calendar! Ask yourself, "Wll God be glorfed by my partakng n ths actvty?" Curt Olson s a staff columnst for The Champon. Should we prosper whle people suffer and de around us? We hear about t all the tme, but do we ever do anythng about t? n today's world, mllons of people de of starvaton each day. Why? s t because we have a food shortage? Hardly. Just ask some mdwestern farmers, who have to let ther gran rot for lack of demand wthn our country. s t because we don't have the fnances to dstrbute the food? Obvously not. So, why are so many people starvng? s t the government's fault? That would be the normal concluson, but what about the Chrstans? Do we have any responsbltes toward the world's starvng people? The book of Proverbs remnds us over and over that we are to have regard for the poor. But are we practcng what the Bble says? How many Chrstans st n ther nce suburban homes and enjoy ther color T.V.s, VCRs and other luxures whle many people n thrd-world countres Tght just to survve? s t rght for us to enjoy the "good lfe" whle many people who have never heard the name of Chrst de each day wthout food? Whoever sad we have to have a couple of nce cars? Dd we get that dea from the world or the Bble? t would probably shame us to see the the money Chrstans spend on nce clothes each year. One of the problems wth 20thcentury, mddle-class Chrstans s that we fal to open our eyes to the real world. Oh, we acknowledge that the Unted States s wealther than most natons, but do we really consder how rch we are? Do we realze the average person n the world can't just hop n hs BMW and go shoppng every Frday nght? Has t over occurred to us that many people can't even afford to own a car? Our concept of poverty s a joke. We complan when we can't afford a car that s less than fve years old. We pray that God wll help us out fnancally but n the mean tme spend unnecessary money on the luxures of lfe. When are we gong to realze that we're just plan down spoled? Tm Sant t's tme for us to wake up and realze there actually s another world out there that needs our help. We need to stop spendng money on ourselves and start spendng t on others. So what f we deny ourselves a color T.V. and two cars. t's about tme we spend our money on the people who really need t. After all, who would God rather have us spend our money on? f we read the New Testamemnt, we can't gnore Chrst's words about the poor all throughout the Gospels. Paul spoke about the Chrstans of Macedona who gave beyond ther ablty to further the kngdom. Do we ever gve beyond our ablty? Chrst explaned to us what real Chrstanty was n Matthew 25:34-40: "Then shall the Kng say unto them on hs rght hand. Come, ye blessed of my Father, nhert the kngdom prepared for you from the foundaton of the world: For was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: was thrsty, and ye gave me water to drnk was a stranger, and ye took me n; Naked, and ye clothed me: was sck, and ye vsted me: was n prson, and ye came unto me. "Then shall the rghteous answer hm, sayng, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thrsty, and gave thee drnk? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee n? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sck, or n prson, and came unto thee? And the Kng shall answer and say unto them, Verly say unto you, nasmuch as ye have done t unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done t unto me." We Chrstans need to wake up and face the problems of the world the way Chrst told us to. We need to realze that real Chrstanty s not just a prayer but somethng that wll compel us to act upon the needs of a dyng world. Tm Sant s a staff columnst for The Champon. Beatty sets record straght on TVs Edtor: 'm sorry to hear that your Pont/Counterpont columnsts wrte "off the top of ther heads" wthout researchng the facts. Keene msses pont of Dems Edtor: Ths s n response to Keene's ntatng a Democrat's Club here at LU. t seems that Keene has entrely mssed the pont as to why a Democrats Club should be started. Accordng to hs platform, hs club wll be nothng more than a pseudo-democrats club. He mght as well go and jon the CRs. The pont of a Democrats Club was to share deas, convctons, and broaden our perspectve. There can be no sharng of deas f the deas on both sdes of an ssue are the same. advocate a Democrats Club that generally accepts the current platform. Let me preface the reasons wth the statement that not all Democrats are as far left as Dukaks and that the majorty of Democrats are moderates or lean toward the rght, as the past two electons have demonstrated. The Democratc platform s not "ant-chrstan" as some would lead us to beleve. Chrstans must always consder the ndvdual over any dea or any phlosophy. feel the Democratc Party has a better record of addressng ssues that apply to people, rather than addressng ssues that protect ambguous deas. am at a loss to why any Chrstan of any party would advocate a buld-up of the warmachne, especally n the area of nuclear weapons and testng. To advocate a "hgher law" of protectng lfe at all costs, then to turn around and support a buld-up of the mltary (at the expense of socal programs, medcal programs, etc.) s confusng. There s no "just-war" for ths Chrstan. The lowerng of personal values, the gnorng for Jesus' prncple of enemylove and the ndscrmnate kllng that occurs to both cvlans and mltary personnel n war can not be logcally supported by Chrstans. The fact that ths s the only non-mltary country n Western cvlzaton that stll executes ndvduals (a method that does not lead to deference) s a slam to any true "pro-lfer." These Democratc platforms any Chrstan could support. Although abhor aborton, at least a pro-choce platform would accomplsh two thngs. Frst, t would place ndvdual responsblty back on the mother and not on the state. Secondly, t would keep Chrstans off the poltcal bandwagons and fads, and back nto an area of mnstry to ndvduals who are hurtng, whch s where they should be. The Democratc Party has a long and postve record of addressng socal ssues, human and cvl rghts ssues, and advocatng programs that were meant to ad ndvduals-- a record that s grossly lackng wth the Republcan party. Let's not get caught up n the trap that makes deals a hgher prorty than ndvrtjnfs. JK true* Democrats Club would logcally, Bblcally and sympathetcally support ther platform and stll mantan a Chrstan perspectve. Davd C Baer Pro-lfers need to take acton Edtor: Whle readng the "actvtes" bulletn board n DeMoss Hall last week, came across a flyer that was surprsed was not torn down by one of the fanatc CR s that seem to control the poltcal clmate on ths campus. The group also acts as a local leader n the movement towards dsarmament by both the US and the Sovet Unon. What bothers me about both the CR s and the proposed Democrats Reform Club s that both clubs, whle pro-lfe, are 8 aggressve n ther support of j nuclear weapons, whch f ever used, whether purposely or accdentally, would destroy «all lfe as we know t today. The pro-lfers on campus wll block the entrances of aborton mlls, but would they attempt to prevent the deployng of nuclear weapons n bases? NO! Ths s hypocrtcal! f these pro-lfers advocate the sanctty of human lfe, why not the sanctty of manknd? One nuclear weapon has the potental to kll more people than aborton has snce t was ' legalzed by Roe vs. Wade n : 1973, yet the Rght actually u advocates such weapons, and worse, the buldup of such weapons. Conservatves and Chrstans must consder redefnng the ' ' term "pro-lfe." Even better, - A maybe the term should be changed to "pro-humanty.", o Ther goal should be not only : ;: to prevent the kllng of the unborn, but the dsmantlng of nuclear weapons, whch could : ultmately destroy all lfe. jj would encourage all "true ' pro-lfers" to consder jonng J The Lynchburg Peace Educaton Center. You take note of all the trval thngs that you mssed durng the day-n day-out rush of school lfe. You become better frends wth your roommates. You notce just how brght the stars shne. Then, talback Charles McCray fumbled on the frst play from scrmmage to hand Western llnos the ball on the LU 29. WU promptly put together a drve that ended wth a Brett Grmshaw 1-yard TD run that pulled the Leathernecks wthn two, 32-30, wth 8:57 left n the game. Lberty then put together ther own drve that culmnated wth a Jary Tndall 35-yard feld goal, to put LU up wth 6:13 left n the game. The bg play on the drve was a 45-yard dump pass from Johnson to talback Leroy Knard who ended the day wth 161 yards rushng and recevng. Could the Flames be out of the woods? No. On the kckoff, LU kcker Joe Pouncey booted two balls n a row out of bounds. n football, on a kckoff, the kck has to stay n bounds or the team gets a fve-yard penalty. So nstead of kckng off at the 35-yard lne, Pouncey had to kck from the 25 and wth a hard wnd blowng n hs face, he shanked the ball and Western took over on the 50. For the thrd consecutve tme, WU had great feld poston and ths tme t proved to be fatal for LU. Mke Cox rambled nto the end zone from 25 yards out to provde the Leathernecks wth the wnnng margn. "You can't gve the number one rated offense n Dvson 1-AA the ball n great feld poston every tme wthout them scorng," coach Morgan Hout sad. "You have to gve them a lot of credt. Wth just :58 left n the half, McCray agan scored, ths tme a 5-yard ramble to pull LU wthn three at After lnebacker Johnny Woods recovered a fumble on the kckoff, Tndall added a 22-yardfeldgoal to pull the Flames even at halftme, n the thrd, McCray added another 8-yard TD run before the Sometmes, t's better to be lucky A wse coach once sad, "Sometmes you have to be better than good, you have to be lucky." Luck s somethng the LU football team has been n short supply of ths year. Last Saturday, mstakes cost the Flames a shot at the number two spot n the naton. n fact, the Flames beat the Leathernecks from Western llnos n every phase of the game except the scoreboard. And agan the Flames made huge mstakes n the fourth quarter that cost them the game. A fumble, then a bad kckoff let WU start ther last two drves n LU terrtory. When you're playng the number one-rated offense n the country, you can't contan dem forever. " thnk our defensve coaches put together a good game plan," coach Morgan Hout sad. "The key was stoppng ther quarterback. He s the best we've seen snce came here." ndeed, the Flame defense was very effectve n stoppng WU QB Paul Snger. So much so that Seattle Seahawk scout John Donaldson, who sat by n the press box, went away not very mpressed wd Snger or any of the WU players. The defensve plan for the Flames ncluded shftng lnebacker Mckey Page from hs normal weak-sde slot to de strong-sde. Ths allowed de Flames to put pressure on Snger and take away de WU's downfeld passng game. For de game, Snger was just 15 of 33 for 144 yards and two nterceptons. Plus, de Flames sacked hm twce. So why dd LU lose ther thrd game n the fourth quarter? Mstakes. Lberty seems to be makng crtcal mstakes late n the game. Wnnng teams are able to play ther best when de game s on the lne. How are the players handlng the tough losses? Cornerback Rchard Shelton chalks t up as a learnng experence. "We need to be able to come back wth class and learn from games lke ths." Talback Leroy Knard s stll optmstc about the season and what the Flames can do ths year. "We just had some mental breakdowns at the wrong tmes, we'll be able to bounce back from ths." "We can't get down after a loss lke ths," Flame defensve lneman Tm Smth sad. "We just have to play hard for four full quarters." A lot of people may be blamng the coachng staff rght now for de three losses, and they have made ther share of mstakes, too. Aganst Eastern llnos, de Flame offense could've taken a delay-of-game penalty before LU punted. EU scored the wnnng TD n the last :05 of the game, so a delay-of-game would've taken at least 30 seconds off the clock. Aganst WU, the coachng staff had an excellent game plan, both on offense and defense. Good enough to beat de second-ranked team n de country. "We made some crtcal mstakes," Hout sad. "We're gonna Green TD catch set the stage for the WU comeback. Knard led the team wth 107 yards on 20 carres and three catches for 54 recevng. McCray added 63 yards on 16 carres along wth hs three TD runs. Green led the team wth 58 recevng yards and one TD catch. Johnson was 11 of 30 for 165 yards and one TD pass. He also threw three nterceptons as the Flames turned the ball over fve tmes. Donald Smth led the team wth 12 tackles whle Shelton and Lancet MacKenze each had ans; ntercepton. The new record s now 11,400; and would lke to thank all de fans for showng up to see a really good football game. So would coach Hout. "'m so proud of our students. X-C best frends compete for wns BY JM MCLAUGHLN Competton breeds excellence, but s not renowned for ts producton of frendshps. Yet, to every rule there seems to be an excepton. Trac Tdwell and Pam Fauber are the excepton. The two have alternated as the number one and two LU women's cross country runners for the frst part of ths season. Trac was the number one runner n the frst two meets, Wllam and Mary and the Tar Heel nvtatonal, whle Pam took LU's top spot n the last two meets, The Furman nvtatonal and the Vrgna ntercollegate. Despte the competton, Pam and Trac reman "best buddes." "Pam s a real source of encouragement to me," Trac says. Coach Ron Hopkns says that "they work well together; they push each other. They are better because they work together; there's no ego trp nvolved." Trac s a senor from Ttusvlle, Fla. where she ran for Ttusvlle Hgh School. Pam s from Lynchburg and dd her runnng at nearby Rustburg Hgh. Both were the top runners n ther schools. They explan that college competton s so much more ferce because "here everybody was number one at ther school." Last year Pam and Trac were the ffth and sxth runners on the number four team n the naton n Dvson 2. " really ddn't expect them to take charge, but they came n and dd t," Hopkns says.
