3 The sixth (6 th ) Church of Revelations is the church of Philadelphia: Philadelphia housed temples of Artemis, Helios, Zeus, Dionysus and Aphrodite. A third-century inscription from the Jewish synagogue there has been recovered. The church in Philadelphia, like the church in Smyrna, had apparently been expelled from the Jewish community; the background resembles that for the Fourth Gospel (see introduction to John).

4 The sixth (6 th ) Church of Revelations is the church of Philadelphia: The city of Philadelphia is located about twenty-eight miles southeast of Sardis and sixty miles east of Smyrna at the foot of the Tmolus mountains (Pliny Hist. nat. 5.30). It was founded between 189 it was organized by trades rather than by tribes (A. H. M. Jones, Cities, 54, 70, 73, 83 84), though the guilds were actually called tribes (Greek City, 162).
