Currently ministering throughout Pennsylvania Helping at-risk youth, inmates, and returning citizens yoke themselves to Christ for salvation and changed lives. David Bowen, Executive Director YOKEFELLOWSHIP PRISON MINISTRY P O Box 413 Huntingdon PA
STATEMENT OF FAITH (added The New Covenant 4/29/17) We in Yokefellowship Prison Ministry believe: God - There is one eternal, almighty, and perfect God, in essence revealed in three persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. We are faithful to the biblical revelation that in one sense God is one and in a different sense He is three. Jesus Christ - Jesus Christ is true God and true Man, born of a virgin, died for our sins, rose from the dead, and will return in glory and power. The Holy Spirit - When a person becomes born again, by believing and receiving Jesus Christ, God resides in that person through the Holy Spirit. All the divine attributes ascribed to the Father and the Son are equally ascribed to the Holy Spirit. The Word The Bible is the inspired, infallible, and authoritative Word of God given through the Holy Spirit for the purpose of teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness. The Fall - God created mankind in His own image, but through the fall in the Garden of Eden man was removed from the Garden and separated from God. Thus, we are all sinners and cannot earn God s favor on our own. The Plan God s original plan to give mankind eternal life was rejected by Adam and Eve. In God s redemptive plan, man is rescued from death by the priceless shed blood of Jesus Christ. His atoning death on the cross ended the separation for all those who come to Him. The Call Everyone who is reconciled to God through Christ Jesus is called to be a minister of reconciliation an ambassador of Christ. As Yokefellows, we are called to provide a ministry of reconciliation to those who are or were incarcerated. The Body of Christ All believers are members of the body of Christ. With Christ as the head, every member is called to have a personal relationship with Him, to be His disciple, to love one another, and to use our gifts for the body. The New Covenant* Those who yoke themselves to Christ are no longer part of the Old Covenant. Though the OT law is good in that it showed us our need for Christ and how to please God, Christians live by and are under a new covenant of grace alone. Having been released from the law, we are to live by grace and our lives are to continually reflect the glory of God. The Reward - For taking the message of God s transforming love and forgiveness to captives and sharing the grace that has been given to us, great will be our reward in heaven. Adopted by unanimous consent at YPM State Board Meeting September 15, 2007, revised 4/29/17. 4 MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR WESLEY KING Dear YPM Faithful Supporters and Volunteers, When I was a small boy, I liked to wear my father's work shoes. They were way too big for me. I had to walk very slowly, and sometimes I stumbled as I tried to be like Daddy. Those shoes were well worn. They represented authority, hard work, experience, gentleness, and good leadership. They represented my security. I felt safe when my father wore his shoes. I could trust in his leadership and counsel. When I was 12 years old, my father was taken from my life by an accident on the farm. He was injured by a cow, and died one week later. I was devastated. The visible security that I had trusted in for so long, and often took for granted, was gone. The evening of my father's death, my mother gathered all eight of us siblings together. She informed us that God has promised to be a Father to the fatherless. And I can testify that God has been a faithful Father. I have come to trust Him to guide my steps. He is my security, my counsel, my life. After my father died, I remember seeing my father's shoes setting on the floor. They were no longer needed by my father. He was now walking on streets of gold. But who was going to fill those shoes? They were still too big for me. In my new role as Chair of the YPM Board, I feel I have been given shoes that are too big for me. David Manos has served faithfully, honorably, and humbly as YPM Board Chair for many years. His dedication to Jesus Christ and His Kingdom is evident in his life, and in the way he handles difficult issues and situations. Dave's dependence on prayer, his faith in God, and his love for people has blessed the ministry of YPM for more than a decade. The Board has come to trust his leadership, and sense security as he directed the ministry. He filled his shoes well. I say Thank you Jesus for the years of faithful leadership given by your servant David. Thank you David for filling your shoes well. Now as we step forward into the New Year, and new leadership at the Board level, we look to the One to whom the ministry of YPM belongs, our Almighty Father God. We need His anointing, direction, and blessing to move forward as we minister to men and women in prisons and jails, and returning citizens. The words to the song O God Our Help written by Isaac Watts come to mind. 1. O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Our shelter from the stormy blast, And our eternal home! 2. Beneath the shadow of thy throne, Still may we dwell secure; Sufficient is thine arm alone, And our defense is sure. 3. Before the hills in order stood, Or earth received her frame, From everlasting thou art God; To endless years the same. 4. A thousand ages in thy sight, Are like the evening gone; Short as the watch that ends the night, Before the rising sun. 5. O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come; Be thou our guide while life shall last, And our eternal home! A special thanks to all who support the ministry of YPM: volunteers who go into institutions; those who minister to returning citizens; those who serve on committees, boards, and in fundraising; and those who pray. Most of all, we give thanks to God for His abiding presence. In His service, Wesley King Chairperson, YPM State Board of Directors 2017 Yokefellowship Prison Ministry Annual Report - 1 -
ABOUT YPM YPM s mission is to help at-risk youth, inmates, and returning citizens yoke themselves to Christ for salvation and changed lives. YPM is a 501c3 umbrella organization with local Area Council affiliates. A governing board of directors, elected by representatives from areas served, provides direction and oversight to the growing ministry. In 2017 there were 15 Area Councils serving throughout PA. Each AC has its own governing body; recruits, trains, and assigns volunteers; has its own treasury and budget; and is asked to contribute 25% of its net income to the parent overarching ministry. Through these ACs, hundreds of volunteers are entering nearly half of the county, state, and federal adult correctional institutions in PA. YPM grew out of a fellowship movement started by Dr. Elton Trueblood ( ), a renowned author, speaker, and theologian, in Trueblood believed being a Christian was synonymous to being yoked with Christ (MATTHEW 11:28-30) and that we need to heed the call of PHILIPPIANS 4:3 to help others, Yes, I ask you loyal yokefellows.. Regarding incarceration, Trueblood stated, Separation from the world for a while is justified if new life emerges. Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. MATTHEW 11:28-30 YPM focuses on small group discussions for spiritual and personal growth through learning and practicing Biblebased disciplines. The result is the changed lives of those we serve as well as our own. The following selected attributes of discipleship are highly valued and taught as marks of a Yokefellow: Commitment - Hearing Christ s call Come to me a Yokefellow knows this answer gives a center of stability in life as he or she also joins Christ in lifting the burdens of others. Discipline - A Yokefellow voluntarily accepts: Discipline of Prayer - pray daily. Discipline of Scripture - read reverently and thoughtfully a portion of Scripture daily, following a definite plan. The Discipline of Worship - to share, at least weekly, in the public worship of God. Discipline of Money - give a definite portion of my income to the promotion of Christ s cause and as an act of worship. Discipline of Time - use my time as a sacred gift, not to be wasted, striving to make my daily work, whatever it may be, a Christian vocation. Discipline of Service - daily lift some human burden. Discipline of Study - develop mental powers by careful reading and study. Witness - A Yokefellow is one who knows that faith in Christ is not a private affair; to be kept it must be shared. Ministry - A Yokefellow is one who participates in the universal ministry. The New Testament is clear; all are called and all are recruits in Christ s cause (Ephesians 4:1). Fellowship - It is impossible to be a Christian in isolation. A Yokefellow finds or produces a redemptive Christian fellowship Yokefellowship Prison Ministry Annual Report - 2 -

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR S REPORT DAVID BOWEN REFLECTIONS This is my fifth and last report as Executive Director for Yokefellowship Prison Ministry. My time of service as executive director will end June 30, I am grateful for the privilege of serving since July 1, Many major changes were made in the structure of YPM s ministry back in The state board was reduced in size from thirty members to ten. A regional structure was developed with three regions and three regional directors. In April 2014 we restructured our regions to five regions: NW, NC, SE, SC, and SW with four regional directors. A Volunteer Management Manual was developed. And other changes were made before I became director. It became my responsibility to begin implementing those changes. I am very grateful for the team I have had the privilege of working with through these years. David Oldham was most helpful during the first four years as our Administrative Assistant. David Manos provided invaluable insight and experience from his many years of service as Chair of the YPM State Board. Sue Wiseman has been extraordinarily helpful because of her expertise in organizational management of nonprofits and her willingness to go far above and beyond the call of duty to get the job done. She currently serves both as Treasurer and Secretary for the State Board. I am grateful for our Regional Directors and their faithful service Danesta Whaley for our NE Region, Alma Maldonado Colon for our SE Region, Carl Geissinger for our SC Region, and Ron Calabro for our SW and NW Regions. I am grateful for the continued participation of John Rush and Larry Coleman in our shared ministry. They are my models for how to be a good Ex-Executive Director. Maybe I should say Returning Executive Director because they keep coming back and are a continuing blessing in our annual conferences and throughout the year. YPM ANNUAL CONFERENCE The theme of our 2017 Annual Conference was The Why and How of Prison Ministry. Our keynote speaker and main presenter was David Morton, the President of the Board for YPM of North Carolina. His many years of experience as a chaplain in the Federal Bureau of Prisons as well has his leadership in YPM in North Carolina were helpful and encouraging. Marsha Banks testimony as a returning citizen, Amiracle4sure, and her workshop on Working with Women in Prison and Aftercare were especially significant for our volunteers working with women. Three other workshops were also well received. The total attendance for the conference was 124. It was especially encouraging to see a growing number of returning citizens attending and participating in the conference. Five attended on scholarships paid for by YPM, Inc. Thank you to Mike Knott who did an excellent job as registrar for the conference. REMEMBERING WAYNE BENJAMIN On January 12th Reba and I attended the Celebration of Life for Wayne Benjamin, Executive Director of YPM The service was held in Wayne s home church, Bethany United Methodist Church in Allentown. It was a great service of worship. It was my privilege to represent YPM in expressing appreciation for Wayne s faithful and fruitful leadership in Yokefellowship. We will always remember Wayne s favorite exclamation: And we do it all because He lives! Wayne served as YPM Executive Director from 1994 through He initially became active in 1983 after meeting with Newman Gaugler, founder and onetime president of the Yokefellowship movement in Pennsylvania. In September of that year Wayne held the first meeting in the Lehigh Valley AC with 13 men in attendance Yokefellowship Prison Ministry Annual Report - 4 -
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR S REPORT DAVID BOWEN (CONTINUED) FAREWELL TO LARRY COLEMAN Larry Coleman served many years as a leader in our Harrisburg Area Council and on the State Board as well as Executive Director from 2011 to Larry was a presenter in several of our Annual Conferences including In 2017 he had serious health issues and decided to move back home to Nebraska where he grew up. He will be greatly missed in Yokefellowship. In his 2017 Christmas letter he wrote: I miss those I left behind in Pennsylvania. But, today we are all but a phone call away. Larry accepted the position of Executive Director in July 2011 to help YPM transition into our regional organizational structure. Larry s attention to detail and his many years of dedication to YPM s core disciplines and values assured the time-tested ministry approach would not be lost in transition. Larry served as ED from July 2011 through June LEADERSHIP CHANGES IN 2017 There were many changes in leadership in In March, Tonia Stanley resigned as Council Director for our Harrisburg Area AC and Virginia Smith became the new Council Director for that council. John Rauch, who served as Council Director for our Franklin County AC for many years, retired effective December 31, Eric Diamond is the new Council Director there. Rich Gallo, Council Director and Chair for our Indiana County AC resigned effective December 31, The new Council Director for Indiana County AC is Sean Atkinson. Rich also resigned as Vice Chair of the State Board effective June The Vice Chair position remained vacant until the annual membership meeting in October. In December Alma Maldonado Colon, Regional Director for our SE Region, a YPM Inc. staff position, announced her resignation effective April 1, She and her husband, Carlos, who has assisted her as a volunteer in YPM, will be developing a new ministry in Liberia, West Africa. In April 2017, I too announced my resignation as Executive Director of YPM Inc, effective June 30, Carl Geissinger, currently serving as the SC Regional Director, has been selected to be my replacement. See my Farewell below. We are deeply grateful for the faithful ministry and fellowship of these leaders who have served and for those who are now accepting new leadership roles among us. REVIEW OF FINANCIAL RECORDS Our QuickBooks and financial records were reviewed by Bucynski Tax Service of Huntingdon, PA. That review is available to all our Area Councils and other donors. The bottom line of the report is: Overall, the Yokefellowship Prison Ministry s financial records and accounting procedures are in very good shape. I am very grateful to Sue Wiseman for her faithful and efficient management of all the paperwork necessary to keep the ministry of YPM as a 501c3 non-profit organization running smoothly. FAREWELL AS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR In April of 2017, I announced to the Board of YPM, Inc. that I would resign as Executive Director effective July 1, I recommended to the Board the name of Carl Geissinger to serve as our new Executive Director. (Both John Rush and Larry Coleman had recommended him when they retired but he was not in a position to accept at those times.) After prayer and evaluation, the Board voted unanimously to elect Carl to be the new Executive Director. I have been and will be working with Carl in this transition. Carl served as the Council Director for our S.U.N. AC. He also served on the YPM, Inc. Board prior to reorganization in 2011, and has since then served well as the Regional Director of our SC Region. He brings to his new responsibility years of experience in effective service in YPM. I have worked closely with Carl and I thank the Lord for his vision for and commitment to this ministry. It is my pleasure and privilege to introduce him to you as your new Executive Director Yokefellowship Prison Ministry Annual Report - 5 -
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR S REPORT DAVID BOWEN (CONTINUED) I thank the Lord for the opportunity to work with so many dedicated servants of the Lord as Yokefellows in prison ministry. I am grateful to have a wife who is equally excited about and committed to this ministry. She has worked by my side every step of the way. We plan, Lord willing, to continue to serve as volunteers in Yokefellowship after I retire as Executive Director. It has been a privilege and blessing to represent the Lord Jesus Christ and the ministry of Yokefellowship in prisons and churches all across Pennsylvania. By His grace we intend to continue in fellowship and labor with you for Him to Whom belongs all the praise, honor, and glory. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen. MINISTRY STATISTICS The statistics for this year s report are included in attached pages. Our Area Councils have done much better this year in submitting Quarterly Reports in a timely manner. Elton Trueblood, founder YPM From his book The Yoke of Christ and other Sermons A number of prisoners have built up, since they started in 1955, a really remarkable fellowship of prayer, of study, and of Christian witness. Each alone, as he faces the ridicule of the other prisoners, has a hard time in trying to maintain his conscious Christian discipleship, but the members find that the backing of the other committed ones is of immense help. In a way which those in civil life find difficult to understand, the fellowship of the committed group within prison walls is truly redemptive. Consequently they have much to teach us who are outside. The men have a common predicament, a common penitence, and a common faith which, in their meeting, they share with one another. That their lives are radically changed, both within the prison and after they are paroled, is not surprising. The fact that so much power can emerge in such an unlikely place should stimulate our minds to think of other ways in which the principles of redemptive fellowship can be applied Yokefellowship Prison Ministry Annual Report
