2 THE CONSECRATION OF AARON AND HIS SONS Text: Exodus 29:1-46, 1. Now this is what you are to do for them to consecrate them so that they may minister as my priests. Take a young bull and two rams without blemish; 2. and bread made without yeast, and perforated cakes without yeast mixed with oil, and wafers without yeast spread with oil you are to make them using fine wheat flour. 3. You are to put them in one basket and present them in the basket, along with the bull and the two rams. 4. You are to present Aaron and his sons at the entrance of the tent of meeting. You are to wash them with water 5. and take the garments and clothe Aaron with the tunic, the robe of the ephod, the ephod, and the breastpiece; you are to fasten the ephod on him by using the skillfully woven waistband. 6. You are to put the turban on his head and put the holy diadem on the turban. 7. You are to take the anointing oil and pour it on his head and anoint him. 8. You are to present his sons and clothe them with tunics 9. and wrap the sashes around Aaron and his sons and put headbands on them, and so the ministry of priesthood will belong to them by a perpetual ordinance. Thus you are to consecrate Aaron and his sons.

You are to present the bull at the front of the tent of meeting, and Aaron and his sons are to put their hands on the head of the bull. 11. You are to kill the bull before the Lord at the entrance to the tent of meeting 12. and take some of the blood of the bull and put it on the horns of the altar with your finger; all the rest of the blood you are to pour out at the base of the altar. 13. You are to take all the fat that covers the entrails, and the lobe that is above the liver, and the two kidneys and the fat that is on them, and burn them on the altar. 14. But the meat of the bull, its skin, and its dung you are to burn up outside the camp. It is the purification offering. 15. You are to take one ram, and Aaron and his sons are to lay their hands on the ram s head, 16. and you are to kill the ram and take its blood and splash it all around on the altar. 17. Then you are to cut the ram into pieces and wash the entrails and its legs and put them on its pieces and on its head 18. and burn the whole ram on the altar. It is a burnt offering to the Lord, a soothing aroma; it is an offering made by fire to the Lord. 19. You are to take the second ram, and Aaron and his sons are to lay their hands on the ram s head, 20. and you are to kill the ram and take some of its blood and put it on the tip of the right ear of Aaron, on the tip of the right ear of his sons, on the thumb of their right hand, and on the big toe of their right foot, and then splash the blood all around on the altar.

You are to take some of the blood that is on the altar and some of the anointing oil and sprinkle it on Aaron, on his garments, on his sons, and on his sons garments with him, so that he may be holy, he and his garments along with his sons and his sons garments. 22. You are to take from the ram the fat, the fat tail, the fat that covers the entrails, the lobe of the liver, the two kidneys and the fat that is on them, and the right thigh for it is the ram for consecration 23. and one round flat cake of bread, one perforated cake of oiled bread, and one wafer from the basket of bread made without yeast that is before the Lord. 24. You are to put all these in Aaron s hands and in his sons hands, and you are to wave them as a wave offering before the Lord. 25. Then you are to take them from their hands and burn them on the altar for a burnt offering, for a soothing aroma before the Lord. It is an offering made by fire to the Lord. 26. You are to take the breast of the ram of Aaron s consecration; you are to wave it as a wave offering before the Lord, and it is to be your share. 27. You are to sanctify the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the contribution, which were waved and lifted up as a contribution from the ram of consecration, from what belongs to Aaron and to his sons. 28. It is to belong to Aaron and to his sons from the Israelites, by a perpetual ordinance, for it is a contribution. It is to be a contribution from the Israelites from their peace offerings, their contribution to the Lord.

The holy garments that belong to Aaron are to belong to his sons after him, so that they may be anointed in them and consecrated in them. 30. The priest who succeeds him from his sons, when he first comes to the tent of meeting to minister in the Holy Place, is to wear them for seven days. 31. You are to take the ram of the consecration and cook its meat in a holy place. 32. Aaron and his sons are to eat the meat of the ram and the bread that was in the basket at the entrance of the tent of meeting. 33. They are to eat those things by which atonement was made to consecrate and to set them apart, but no one else may eat them, for they are holy. 34. If any of the meat from the consecration offerings or any of the bread is left over until morning, then you are to burn up what is left over. It must not be eaten, because it is holy. 35. Thus you are to do for Aaron and for his sons, according to all that I have commanded you; you are to consecrate them for seven days. 36. Every day you are to prepare a bull for a purification offering for atonement. You are to purge the altar by making atonement for it, and you are to anoint it to set it apart as holy. 37. For seven days you are to make atonement for the altar and set it apart as holy. Then the altar will be most holy. Anything that touches the altar will be holy. 38. Now this is what you are to prepare on the altar every day continually: two lambs a year old. 39. The first lamb you are to prepare in the morning, and the second lamb you are to prepare around sundown.

With the first lamb offer a tenth of an ephah of fine flour mixed with a fourth of a hin of oil from pressed olives, and a fourth of a hin of wine as a drink offering. 41. The second lamb you are to offer around sundown; you are to prepare for it the same meal offering as for the morning and the same drink offering, for a soothing aroma, an offering made by fire to the Lord. 42. This will be a regular burnt offering throughout your generations at the entrance of the tent of meeting before the Lord, where I will meet with you to speak to you there. 43. There I will meet with the Israelites, and it will be set apart as holy by my glory. 44. So I will set apart as holy the tent of meeting and the altar, and I will set apart as holy Aaron and his sons, that they may minister as priests to me. 45. I will reside among the Israelites, and I will be their God, 46. and they will know that I am the Lord their God, who brought them out from the land of Egypt, so that I may reside among them. I am the Lord their God. (NET) Introduction: I. The consecration of Aaron and his sons. A. The anointing. B. The sacrifices. II. Key quote:...

7 A. Exodus 29:46, and they will know that I am the Lord their God, who brought them out from the land of Egypt, so that I may reside among them. I am the Lord their God. (NET) Commentary: I. The anointing: vv. 1-9, Now this is what you are to do for them to consecrate them so that they may minister as my priests. Take a young bull and two rams without blemish; and bread made without yeast, and perforated cakes without yeast mixed with oil, and wafers without yeast spread with oil you are to make them using fine wheat flour. You are to put them in one basket and present them in the basket, along with the bull and the two rams. You are to present Aaron and his sons at the entrance of the tent of meeting. You are to wash them with water and take the garments and clothe Aaron with the tunic, the robe of the ephod, the ephod, and the breastpiece; you are to fasten the ephod on him by using the skillfully woven waistband. You are to put the turban on his head and put the holy diadem on the turban. You are to take the anointing oil and pour it on his head and anoint him. You are to present his sons and clothe them with tunics and wrap the sashes around Aaron and his sons and put headbands on them, and so the ministry of priesthood will belong to them by a perpetual ordinance. Thus you are to consecrate Aaron and his sons. (NET) A. The anointing was a process of rubbing, smearing or pouring oil on a person to mark them as being set apart. Olive oil was the most commonly used oil.

Leviticus 8:12, He then poured some of the anointing oil on the head of Aaron and anointed him to consecrate him. (NET) 2. Psalm 133:2, It is like fine oil poured on the head which flows down the beard Aaron s beard, and then flows down his garments. (NET) 3. Kings and priests were anointed as a public sign that they were chosen by God, and officially accepted into the position. a. To refer to a person as the Messiah or the Christ is to acknowledge that person as the anointed one chosen by God. 4. Holman Bible Dictionary, pg. 70, The Hebrew verb mashach (noun: Messiah) and the Greek verb chiro (noun: christos) are translated to anoint. 5. David refused to harm king Saul because he was the anointed one of God. a. 1 Samuel 24:6, He said to his men, May the Lord keep me far away from doing such a thing to my lord, who is the Lord s chosen one, by extending my hand against him. After all, he is the Lord s chosen one. (NET) B. The anointing of Aaron and his sons marked them as holy and set apart for the work of the Lord.

Isaiah 61:3, to strengthen those who mourn in Zion, by giving them a turban, instead of ashes, oil symbolizing joy, instead of mourning, a garment symbolizing praise, instead of discouragement. They will be called oaks of righteousness, trees planted by the Lord to reveal his splendor. (NET) 2. Leviticus 8:6-9, 12, So Moses brought Aaron and his sons forward and washed them with water. Then he put the tunic on Aaron, wrapped the sash around him, and clothed him with the robe. Next he put the ephod on him and placed on him the decorated band of the ephod, and fastened the ephod closely to him with the band. He then set the breastpiece on him and put the Urim and Thummim into the breastpiece. Finally, he set the turban on his head and attached the gold plate, the holy diadem, to the front of the turban just as the Lord had commanded Moses. He then poured some of the anointing oil on the head of Aaron and anointed him to consecrate him. (NET) C. Before Moses could anoint Aaron and his sons, God instructed him to wash them. 1. Considering the scarcity of water in the desert, this act of cleansing them prior to presenting them before God reinforces the fact that purity and cleanliness are essential to enter his holy presence.

10 D. By this act of anointing and consecrating Aaron and his sons, they became perpetual heirs of the priestly ministry. This was the genesis of the levitial priesthood. 1. Exodus 29:8-9, You are to present his sons and clothe them with tunics and wrap the sashes around Aaron and his sons and put headbands on them, and so the ministry of priesthood will belong to them by a perpetual ordinance. Thus you are to consecrate Aaron and his sons. (NET) 2. Numbers 8:19, 22, I have given the Levites as a gift to Aaron and his sons from among the Israelites, to do the work for the Israelites in the tent of meeting, and to make atonement for the Israelites, so there will be no plague among the Israelites when the Israelites come near the sanctuary. After this, the Levites went in to do their work in the tent of meeting before Aaron and before his sons. As the Lord had commanded Moses concerning the Levites, so they did. (NET) II. The sacrifices: v , You are to present the bull at the front of the tent of meeting, and Aaron and his sons are to put their hands on the head of the bull. You are to kill the bull before the Lord at the entrance to the tent of meeting and take some of the blood of the bull and put it on the horns of the altar with your finger; all the rest of the blood you are to pour out at the base of the altar. You are to take all the fat that covers the entrails, and the lobe that is above the liver, and the two kidneys and the

You are to take one ram, and Aaron and his sons are to lay their hands on the ram s head, and you are to kill the ram and take its blood and splash it all around on the altar. You are to take some of the blood that is on the altar and some of the anointing oil and sprinkle it on Aaron, on his garments, on his sons, and on his sons garments with him, so that he may be holy, he and his garments along with his sons and his sons garments. You are to take from the ram the fat, the fat tail, the fat that covers the entrails, the lobe of the liver, the two kidneys and the fat that is on them, and the right thigh for it is the ram for consecration and one round flat cake of bread, one perforated cake of oiled bread, and one wafer from the basket of bread made without yeast that is before the Lord. You are to put all these in Aaron s hands and in his sons hands, and you are to wave them as a wave offering before the Lord. Then you are to take them from their hands and burn them on the altar for a burnt offering, for a soothing aroma before

12 the Lord. It is an offering made by fire to the Lord. You are to take the breast of the ram of Aaron s consecration; you are to wave it as a wave offering before the Lord, and it is to be your share. You are to sanctify the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the contribution, which were waved and lifted up as a contribution from the ram of consecration, from what belongs to Aaron and to his sons. The priest who succeeds him from his sons, when he first comes to the tent of meeting to minister in the Holy Place, is to wear them for seven days. Every day you are to prepare a bull for a purification offering for atonement. You are to purge the altar by making atonement for it, and you are to anoint it to set it apart as holy. For seven days you are to make atonement

13 for the altar and set it apart as holy. Then the altar will be most holy. Anything that touches the altar will be holy. Now this is what you are to prepare on the altar every day continually: two lambs a year old. The first lamb you are to prepare in the morning, and the second lamb you are to prepare around sundown. I will reside among the Israelites, and I will be their God, and they will know that I am the Lord their God, who brought them out from the land of Egypt, so that I may reside among them. I am the Lord their God. (NET) A. One bull and two rams were the initial sacrifices required to consecrate Aaron and his sons. B. Aaron and his sons were instructed to lay their hands on the head of each animal before sacrificing it.

This may have been to identify the animal as their sacrifice. 2. By laying their hands on the head of the animal, they transferred their sins to the animal. 3. In Leviticus Aaron was instructed to put his hands on the head of the scapegoat to remove the sins of the Israelites. a. Leviticus 16:21, Aaron is to lay his two hands on the head of the live goat and confess over it all the iniquities of the Israelites and all their transgressions in regard to all their sins, and thus he is to put them on the head of the goat and send it away into the wilderness by the hand of a man standing ready. (NET) 4. Even those chosen by God must be cleansed of their sins. C. Blood of the sacrificed bull was placed on the horns of the altar; the remainder was poured out at the altar s base. D. The blood of the first ram was splashed around the altar. E. Blood of the second ram was put on the tip of the right ear, on the right thumb and on the big toe of the right foot of Aaron. This was also done to the sons.

The significance of this ritual was to signify complete service to God. a. The ear representing hearing the word of God, to know his will. b. The thumb and hand for accomplishing the will of God with all that you set your hand to. c. The toe representing walking in the way of God wherever his spiritual journey took him. F. Some of this blood was mixed with the anointing oil and sprinkled on the garments of Aaron and his sons. 1. Just as they were to be made holy, their garments were also anointed and made holy to approach the presence of the Lord. G. The wave offering. 1. The second ram was identified as Aaron s, the ram of consecration. It was sacrificed differently than the first, which was burned on the altar. 2. The breast of Aaron s ram was offered to the Lord in a wave offering. a. This was an acknowledgement that everything comes from God and what we receive is returned as a gift from God.

The breast and thigh were sanctified, then given to Aaron and his sons to be eaten. a. Leviticus 7:34-35, for the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the contribution offering I have taken from the Israelites out of their peace offering sacrifices and have given them to Aaron the priest and to his sons from the people of Israel as a perpetual allotted portion. This is the allotment of Aaron and the allotment of his sons from the Lord s gifts on the day Moses presented them to serve as priests to the Lord. (NET) H. The breast and thigh from the ram of consecration were to be cooked in a holy place. 1. Leviticus 8:31, Then Moses said to Aaron and his sons, Boil the meat at the entrance of the Meeting Tent, and there you are to eat it and the bread which is in the ordination offering basket, just as I have commanded, saying, Aaron and his sons are to eat it, (NET) 2. Leviticus 10:14, Also, the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the contribution offering you must eat in a ceremonially clean place, you and your sons and daughters with you, for they have been given as your allotted portion and the allotted portion of your sons

17 from the peace offering sacrifices of the Israelites. (NET) I. Only the priests or his family members were allowed to eat this consecrated food. No left overs were permitted. Anything not eaten was to be burned. This was the food of the priests. J. This ritual of consecration was to be performed every day for seven consecutive days. This repetition emphasized the fact that as fallen people we must constantly seek forgiveness for sins. K. A bull was sacrificed each day as atonement for the altar to insure its holiness. L. Each day two two year old lambs were sacrificed, one in the morning, the other at sundown. M. In the closing verses of this chapter, 42 through 46, God once again declares his reason for these requirements. This will be the place that is holy, set apart and sanctified. It is the place that is agreeable to God, where he will live among the Israelites. He will be their God and they will be his people, thus restating his original pledge to the Israelites. 1. Exodus 6:7, I will take you to myself for a people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from your enslavement to the Egyptians. (NET)

Exodus 19:5-6, And now, if you will diligently listen to me and keep my covenant, then you will be my special possession out of all the nations, for all the earth is mine, and you will be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. These are the words that you will speak to the Israelites. (NET) 3. Exodus 25:8, Let them make for me a sanctuary, so that I may live among them. (NET) 4. Exodus 29:45-56, I will reside among the Israelites, and I will be their God, and they will know that I am the Lord their God, who brought them out from the land of Egypt, so that I may reside among them. I am the Lord their God. (NET) 5. Leviticus records that the Israelites did witness God s living among them. a. Leviticus 9:22-23, Then Aaron lifted up his hands toward the people and blessed them and descended from making the sin offering, the burnt offering, and the peace offering. Moses and Aaron then entered into the Meeting Tent. When they came out, they blessed the people, and the glory of the Lord appeared to all the people. (NET)

19 Conclusion: I. To be acceptable to God the Israelites have to purify themselves through animal sacrifices that cleansed them of their sins. A. We no longer have the need to sacrifice animals because Jesus Christ has taken that burden upon himself. 1. His blood shed on the cross cleansed us far beyond the capability of any other sacrifice we could offer. 2. That was the fulfillment of his purpose on earth. B. Related references: Matthew 1:21, 22, She will give birth to a son and you will name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. This all happened so that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet would be fulfilled: (NET) 2. Matthew 20:17-19, As Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve aside privately and said to them on the way, Look, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the experts in the law. They will condemn him to death, and will turn him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged severely and crucified. Yet on the third day, he will be raised. (NET)

Luke 2:10-11, But the angel said to them, Do not be afraid! Listen carefully, for I proclaim to you good news that brings great joy to all the people: Today your Savior is born in the city of David. He is Christ the Lord. (NET) II. These rituals were the beginning of the temple worship that was to come later in the land promised by God. A. Animal sacrifices were not new or unusual. 1. Pagan worshipers had sacrifices for many, many years. B. What was new was admitting to God that we were by nature sinful and needed to pray to him for redemption, admitting that he is our creator and Lord. III. The Ten Commandments (the decalogue) codified the conduct that is acceptable to God. A. To break one of God s laws was and is a sin. B. Our very nature makes us susceptible to sin, so God gave us a method of reconciliation, to beg his forgiveness. 1. Animal sacrifices were not adequate to cleanse us of our sins. C. Only the blood of the lamb Jesus Christ was worthy of granting us God s grace.

John 1:29, On the next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, Look, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! (NET) 2. Romans 3:23-31, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. But they are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. God publicly displayed him at his death as the mercy seat accessible through faith. This was to demonstrate his righteousness, because God in his forbearance had passed over the sins previously committed. This was also to demonstrate his righteousness in the present time, so that he would be just and the justifier of the one who lives because of Jesus faithfulness. Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded! By what principle? Of works? No, but by the principle of faith! For we consider that a person is declared righteous by faith apart from the works of the law. Or is God the God of the Jews only? Is he not the God of the Gentiles too? Yes, of the Gentiles too! Since God is one, he will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith. Do we then nullify the law through faith? Absolutely not! Instead we uphold the law. (NET) IV. John records the words of Jesus that illustrate why he came to earth, the immortal God, born of mortal flesh to live among us, to teach us and ultimately die on the cross for our sins.

22 A. The purpose of his life was to save us from our transgressions so that we could have eternal life with him in heaven. B. This was not just for Israelites, but encompasses all who believe in him, confess their sins and are baptized in his name. This was for all, not just a chosen few or a particular nation, but for the entire world. 1. John 3:16-17, For this is the way God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world should be saved through him. (NET) V. The author of Hebrews adds further insite as to why Jesus came to us. A. Hebrews 10:5-7, 10, So when he came into the world, he said, Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me. Whole burnt offerings and sin-offerings you took no delight in. Then I said, Here I am: I have come it is written of me in the scroll of the book to do your will, O God. By his will we have been made holy through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. (NET) VI. It is no longer necessary to offer animal sacrifices which were not sufficient to reconcile us to God s grace.

23 A. The death, burial and resurrection of Christ is the only offering that is capable of making us acceptable to God. B. His atonement is good for all time, past, present and future, once for all. 1. Romans 5:8-9, But God demonstrates his own love for us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, because we have now been declared righteous by his blood, we will be saved through him from God s wrath. (NET) 2. 1 John 2:2, and he himself is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for our sins but also for the whole world. (NET) 3. Hebrews 7:27, He has no need to do every day what those priests do, to offer sacrifices first for their own sins and then for the sins of the people, since he did this in offering himself once for all. (NET)
