Faramade Adeniyi Professor Mary Hays Rhet February 2017 Working Thesis: Religion play a vital role when it comes to abortion. Most religion prohibits the abortion leaving women with no choices. Most women value their religious beliefs and avoid engaging in practices that violate these beliefs and values. However, every woman should have the right to make any decision over her body no matter their religion. Abortion: Where Do Major Religious Groups Stand? An Annotated Bibliography "BBC - Religions - Islam: Abortion." BBC News. BBC, n.d. Web. 05 Mar This article explains how there isn t a public position on abortion. But according to the article, it states that most Muslims believes abortion to be wrong and haram which means forbidden. However, Islamic laws make allowance for abortion up to 16 weeks into the pregnancy and when the mother s life is at risk. The views of different schools of thoughts or Muslim law are different on when and why abortion is allowed. Some school allow abortion at any time before 120 days after conception while others only permit it in the first 7 weeks. Islam allows abortion to save the life of the mother because it is sees this as the lesser of two evils. While some scholars states that abortion where the mother is the victim of rape or incest is permissible in the first 120 days of pregnancy, others say

that abortion for such reason is never allowed. Also, Islam does not allow abortion in the case where an unwanted pregnancy is the result of unforced adultery. This article is a web source. This article was found on largely known website known as BBC. This source is not the most reliable because it was last updated in However, it provided a lot of information needed about Islam and abortion. This source is not scholarly nor current. It is a very detailed source. It is not a peer reviewed source. This article is will help me provide more information and educate my reader about how too many laws affect and prevent women from making their own decision. I will also use it make a point since it goes against my thesis on how this laws make it difficult to get an abortion because of some hidden exemptions in them. Condie, Kent C. "Premortal Spirits: Implications for Cloning, Abortion, Evolution, and Extinction." Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought, vol. 39, no. 1, Spring2006, pp This article discusses the significance of issues such as abortion, cloning, evolution and extinction in the Mormon church. It talks about how if a spirit were predestined for a given mortal body and that body is aborted before birth, the spirit would never be able to have a mortal existence. But abortion prior to the time the spirit enters the fetus simply means that the fetus would be assigned to another fetus. This article explains the Mormon Church stance on abortion is very strong; unless a woman is raped or if the baby is posing a risk to the mother s life, then abortion can be done. I found this source in the University of Illinois library database. It is a good article source to use for my paper because it is a from a publication by the LDS church. This

article is a credible source to us for my research paper. It is reliable source for my paper because it has been peer reviewed. It is also an academic journal. I will use this source in order to give the reader information about the stance of the LDS church on abortion. Florida, R.E. "Buddhist Approaches to Abortion." Asian Philosophy, vol. 1, no. 1, Mar. 1991, p. 39. This article explains how Buddhists believes that abortion is a middle way between prochoice and pro-life. The First Precept of Buddhism state states that I undertake to observe the rule to abstain from taking life. This indirectly means that abortion is an act that involves violence. The author also discusses how the moral consequences not only come into play but the physical and mental damage it does to the woman s health. This article gives example of where Buddhism is most practiced in the world. In Thailand, abortion is legal only when there is a serious threat to the health of the mother and in cases of rape. In Taiwan, abortion is illegal. In China, Buddhist objection to abortion are neither voiced nor would they be listened to in the People s Republic of China. This article was written by R. E. Florida who is a professor in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Swaziland. This article has undergone the peer review process and it is very reliable. This is an academic journal. This article is a very good source for my paper because it discusses different countries point of view. This source will strengthen my paper because it kind of support my working thesis. I will use this source for my paper because it brought up an interesting idea of some countries who aren t allowed to speak on issues such as abortion. I will use this as an argument in my paper.

Smith, Wesley. "Presbyterians OK with Killing Born Babies." National Right to Life News, July 2014, p. 31. This article reveals how the support of the Presbyterian Church USA for abortion in the United States caused a lot of negative reactions from the public. The article reveals that Presbyterians are ok with killing born babies. According to the Presbyterian Church, they voted no on protecting babies born alive after a failed abortion. The Presbyterian church believes that unwanted babies can be killed in the same manner as they can be aborted. This article has not been peer reviewed. It is not an academic journal. This is a news article so it can be credible to some certain extent. This article is a secondary source but it is still reliable. This article is detailed in every aspect, the title quickly gives a glimpse of what it is about. This source is very good for my paper because it brings a new idea to my research sources. Although, I don t agree with this Church s view, I will use it in my research paper to make it more interesting. Stallsworth, Paul T. "APPENDIX D: United Methodism on Abortion." Human Life Review, vol. 34, no. 3, Summer2008, pp This article discusses the stand of the Methodist church on the removal of abortion from the criminal code while been asked to be placed under the law of medical practice. After the Church issued a statement on abortion in 2004, it has undergone careful changes that is more pro-life. The use of late term abortion is opposed. Even though this article has not been peer reviewed, it is still a reliable source. This article gives a lot of detail about the Methodist church stand and how their perspective is changing. This source is not scholarly. It is a good source for my paper because it will help

strengthen my research paper more. I will use this source for my paper by using it against my thesis. Stephens, Moira, et al. "Religious Perspectives on Abortion and a Secular Response." Journal of Religion & Health, vol. 49, no. 4, Dec. 2010, pp This article discusses different religious perspectives on abortion but I will be only focusing on the Jewish perspective. The general approach to Judaism is that a fetus is a sacred form of developing human life whose termination should only be regrade if the pregnancy poses a significant threat to the mother. There is still controversy around this detail. But this agreement is based on Exodus which is a book in the Bible. So, the tendency in Judaism to recognize that abortion of a fetus while not taken lightly is not a form of murder. According to Jewish tradition, abortion must be seriously considered which means a woman must have a good reason to fear that bearing a child in their womb will lead to their own death or seriously threaten their health. Although there is no uniform position or stance when it comes to abortion in Judaism, abortion rights are supported with few or no limits. This article is reliable because it has been peer reviewed. It is an academic journal which make it credible. This source is very good for my paper because it explains the Judaism perspective on abortion. I will use this source in my paper to inform the reader about kind of where the Jewish religion stand on abortion. Teichman, Jenny. "Abortion and the Roman Catholic Church (Book)." Philosophical Quarterly, vol. 29, no. 117, Oct. 1979, pp

This article is based on a book review of the Abortion and the Roman Catholic Church by Susan Teft Nicholson. According to Teichman, the book focuses on how Dr. Nicholson argues that Catholic teaching on abortion is not coherent. In the book, she quotes a theologian saying, Better that a million women and fetuses die than that a physician stain his soul with murder. Teichman argues that this is certainly not true. The author of the book argues since Catholic teachings is confused and inconsistent, the Catholic Church has no special right or place to ask that legal restriction be placed on abortion. This article discusses Nicholson arguments and claims on the Catholic view on abortion. This source is an academic journal which has been peer reviewed. It is a book review which makes it a secondary source. This source is very opinionated and biased and doesn t agree with the author s views. It is a very detailed source. This source is reliable but I wouldn t use it for my research paper. I will not be using this source on my paper because it does not discuss the stance or position of the Catholic church on abortion.
