"Obvously I'm n total support of the Presdent's actons," Falwell sad. "Up untl yesterday (Jan. 16, the day of the attack), he (Bush) has been very restraned and has made sure that every passve form of negotatons had been exercsed. DEMPSEY Cty News Edtor The Vrgna Supreme Court announced Frday, Jan. 11, that Lberty Unversty's request for tax-free bonds was a volaton of thefrstamendment, and LU spokesman Mark DeMoss sad the unversty wll not appeal the decson to the U.S. Supreme Court. The decson, whch reverses a lower court rulng n favor of LU, means that Lberty wll have to seek taxable bonds. These bonds, however, have not yet been approved by thecompany whch s ssung them. DeMoss sad that he does not expect any problems wth the taxable bonds as a result of the Supreme Court's rulng, but he does not know when the taxable bonds wll be fnalzed. S. troops need support, prayers of all Amercans After several months of straned tensons, the fne wre has fnally broken and war has been hand-delvered to the Mddle East. Mllons support the war as a "just" cause. Daly thousands demonstrate aganst t as the outrageous attempt of a money-grubbng naton to sacrfce ts young men to guarantee an ample supply of cheap ol. And, unfortunately, as ncredulous as t may seem, there exsts a porton of the populaton whch opts to gnore the stuaton altogether. The next weeks wll see an onslaught of red-faced warmongers callng for more death and destructon and bleedng hearts weepng about deaths whch may never come or screamng about njustces whch don't even drectly affect them. Armchar warrors wll ease themselves out of ther squeaky La-Z-Boys n order to choose sdes. And amd all of ms turmol and the petty arguments concernng a stuaton over whch none of us has control, the men and women of our armed forces wll often become lost and forgotten. The true ssue at hand, then, should be channelng our energes nto demonstratng a concern and support for those men and women who are actually dong the kllng, the bleedng and the dyng rather than argung about the moralty of the war tself. After all, none of our servcemen or women asked to be shpped off to a desert on the backsde of nowhere. None of them asked to lve n the subhuman condtons they have endured durng the past fve months. They are performng the job whch they have been nstructed to perform. The most obvous symbol of troop support s the yellowrbbon whch seems to bepoppng up everywhere. Many local busnesses (.e. Leggett and Daybreak Restaurant) are dstrbutng yellow rbbons, free of charge, to any members of the publc who want them. Theserbbonscan be secured to front doors, placed n wndows, attached to car antennas or placed bascally anywhere where they wll serve as a beacon of the publc's support of the troops, even f not the war tself. Another easy way to demonstrate support for the U.S. troops n the Mddle East s for motorsts to drve wth ther headlghts on durng the day. A smple gesture? Perhaps. But even ths small acton can serve as a constant remnder of those who are servng and rskng ther lves n the Mddle East We don't need to agree wth what our troops are dong n order to support the fact that they are dong t. Dsplayng the Amercan flag s another way to show that we back the troops. Fnally, the Champon staff has desgned an emblem whch can be cut out and placed n a car or dorm wndow as a remnder that Lberty remembers the Amercans who are currently or may soon be servng n the Gulf (See the bottom of page 3). As all the exctement and hype des down and the Gulf War drags on nto monotonous drudgery, our troops wll have lttle to buld ther morale other than the knowledge and belef that there s, somewhere, a naton and homeland whch loves them and wll not blame them for the actons whch they must take and the deeds of war whch they must commt. Those of us who have been glued to our televson sets durng the past week may soontreof relgously followng every new development. How much sooner wll our troops tre of lvng close to death n the Saud Araban desert? We can smply change the channel or turn the set off, but they cannot just pack up and come home. Although some of us may beleve n the war and others thnk t s deplorable, let us celebrate our men and women and ther courage and assure them that ther naton s watng and prayng for them to come home. The locals call t a heart attack. Jennngs, however, s suspcous. When two more people de, ncludng the agng Metcalf, Jennngs decdes to exhume the bodes and examne them. He dscovers that all tfree have been btten by a spder, Jennngs calls n a natonally-known expert on spders and, along wth'the town extermnator Delbert McClontock (John Goodman), goes huntng for the spder. The par soon dscovers that the spder has multpled and ts offsprng are just as deadly and extremely aggressve. "Arachnophoba" may sound a bt corny on the surface. Kller spders nvade small-town Amerca. However, f you gve t a chance, you won't be dsapponted. The actng s unformly excellent, especally Goodman as the amusng extermnator. "Arachnophoba" s flled wth creepy, crawly spders that are bound to have you squrmng and jumpng at every turn. Marshall has nfused thsflmwth heart-stoppng suspense and plenty of thrlls. It may not be Academy Award materal, but "Arachnophoba" s an excellent move, guaranteed to send a chll up your spne and nject even the bravest of souls wth a strong fear of these ltde eght-legged beasts. the Champon Staff How do you feel the war n the Mddle East wll affect the Unted States? Hammer's song "Pray" as a headlne n the Lberty Champon), but the arguments are now between fellow students and the orgnal ssue s fast becomng secondary. One student n her letter made many strong ponts n her opposton to the headlne. True, ths nsttuton does not condone secular musc and ths makes t a double standard to use secular lyrcs. It s also a contradcton to have the headlne n queston on the same page as an artcle for Chrstan muscan, Km Hll. Furthermore, the rebuttals carred weght as well. I'll agree that the reference to the rock group Heart was totally unrelated to the argument whch the wrter was makng. Also, the letter could have been more dstnct n ts use of Scrptures, and fewer generalzatons about the newspaper staff members beng backsldden could have been used as well. I strongly agree that the wrter should not have judged the staff of the paper "lest she be judged." And, true, there are more pressng ssues n Chrstanty than the headlne of a college newspaper. However, as I read along patently, I repeatedly came across comments such as "get your facts suaght" and "use your bran" whch were ncluded n the letters whch defended the use of the headlne. Yet why, just after accusng someone else of not usng facts, were nether wrters able to present readers wth more facts than accusatons? The motve of the headlne seems to be what s under examnaton. Yet, no matter how sncere the motve, the use of lyrcs from a secular song M demeans the artcle's purpose whch was to remnd us of the mportance of prayer. Instead, the focus of prayer was shared wth M. C. Hammer. Was ths the purpose behnd the use of the headlne? Fnally, I ask you, the edtor, why nclude a headlne n the Champon that s gong to str up controversy the way ths one dd? We could accuse all those who have wrtten letters to the edtor, ncludng myself, for contnually beatng a dead horse, but the truth s, the use of a smple headlne about the necessty of prayer would have sparked vrtually no controversy and avoded all of ths to begn wth. My advce to you for the future s that when you can satsfy everyone, please do so, rather than succeedng n offendng some. Oh, by the way, "Close, but no cgar?" Gluttons for punshment, aren't you? 4 Tuesday, Jan. 22,1991 The Lberty Champon, Page 3 Invason spawns legtmacy debate After all of the watng, all of the speculatng and all of the talkng, the nevtable consequence of the U.S. presence n the Mddle East has been realzed. War has begun. Before t s all over, ths act of nterventonsm on the part of Amerca wll be pad for wth our dearest blood. Throughout the entre ordeal, however, one smple queston screams for an answer. Why? Why are we so eager for war? Why do we have hundreds of thousands of troops statoned n a desert on the other sde of the world? Is there any logc or reason to the madness that has grpped the nternatonal communty and, more drectly, Washngton, D.C.? The clche 1 answer to these questons s that we are fghtng to stop the mad ravagngs of a lunatc. We arefghtngto stop Saddam Hussen. But ths pat answer smply leads us to another queston: stop hm from what? Surely a man who fought eght years aganst a decmated Iran and only managed a draw cannot be consdered a serous threat to our own natonal securty. Even f he were to take Saud Araba (an event whch s hghly unlkely), t s mplausble to thnk that Hussen's mltary could stretch across the ocean to the Unted States. The crss n the gulf s a squabble wthn the Araban communty. At one tme the troublemaker was Iran, then Lbya, and now t s Iraq. But Araban dctators have a long track record of bg talk that lacks the mght to back up ther empty boasts of power. Hussen s no dfferent. Once we dspose of hm, someone else wll rse up and spew forth ant- Amercan/ant-freedom rhetorc. If we keep knockng off Araban dctators untl wefndone we lke, we wll be fghtng forever. Some have sad that Hussen s dangerously close to controllng a major share of the world'sol supply. That, they argue, could translate nto a hardshp for the Amercan consumer as gas prces would surely skyrocket. But even wth control over Saud Araba, Hussen would only control 46 percent of the world's ol. That may seem lke a lot, but t sn' t enough for hm to dctate the prce. Let's suppose Hussen decdes to rase the prce of ol. What happens? Smple. We buy more ol from other natons. Not even the mghty OPEC allance of the '70s could reach a consensus on the prce of ol. Don't be fooled by the apparent ease of the early stages of the war. Iraq wll strke back, and when t does, t wll ht hard. That sn't to say Iraq mght trumph. It won't. Hussen s facng the most powerful mltary allance ever assembled. But how many lves are we wllng to sacrfce for a vctory that wll reap so few benefts for us? What about democracy? Hasn't that always been an deal worth fghtng and dyng for? Yes. But Kuwat has never been a democratc naton. Essentally, we are denouncng one form of dctatorshp n defense of another. Kuwat s not an oass of democracy nor s t our frend. The Arabs, whether they be Iranans, Sauds, or Iraqs, hate the Unted States. They tolerate us only when we serve ther purposes. If we werefghtngfor somethng as glorfed as democracy, then why are we not standng up to Mkhal Gorbachev and hs Sovet war machne? 6 Tuesday, Jan. 22,1991 news Coyote caper not part of satanc rtual By BEN LaFROMBOIS Champon Reporter Twelve coyote carcasses left to decay on Lberty Mountan by the Lberty Unversty Bology Department were found Saturday, Jan. 11, causng Lynchburg cty offcals to speculate that they were the result of satanc cult actvty or the work of a deranged ndvdual. The carcasses were dscovered n a secluded area by someone who was four-wheelng. "We never expected anyone to come across them," Dr. Paul Sattler, charman of the bology department, sad. Much of the speculaton was due to the condton of the carcasses and ther supposed arrangement. The anmals had been sknned and ther heads removed for the skulls, Sattler explaned. "We also removed the stomachs for det analyss," he added. The Lynchburg News & Daly Advance reported that the hearts and paws had also been removed from the anmals. Sattler explaned that paws from three or four of the coyotes had been removed from the anmals before Lberty receved them n November from the Vrgna Department of Game and Inland Fsheres. "We ddn't take thcpawsoff.and the hearts were not removed," Sattler sad. The arrangement of the anmals caused nvestgators to thnk that the coyotes had been "hand-carred nto the woods wth some knd of unformty. There was some knd of patten, not n a rtualstc sense, (but) they all had a pattern n the way they were lad out," polce Cmdr. R. J. Morrson sad, accordng to the News & Daly Advance. "There was no pattern n the dstr- buton. They were spread out so natural decomposton would take place," Sattler sad. "We wanted the bones avalable f they were needed. DEMPSEY Campus News Edtor Even though the Vrgna Supreme Court's decson to deny Lberty taxfree bonds wll probably cost the school $2 mllon a year n nterest, no more budget cuts are planned, Mark DeMoss,spokesman for LU and the Rev. Jerry Falwell, sad n an ntervew Frday. "It s never safe to say there wll be no more cuts," DeMoss sad, "but we are pleased wth the progress over the last two years n cost reducton. So I can say there wll probably be no more cuts." DeMoss sad the unversty s now operatng "n the black." However, that does not mean there s any extra money to be spent. "We are operatng n the black from the standpont that revenue exceeds expendtures. But all excess revenue s gong to debt payments. So I don't want to gve anybody a false sense of securty." DeMoss also talked about the new cafetera, whch was supposed to be opened n tme for the sprng semester. The projected completon date s now August, DeMoss sad. "The cafetera wll be fnshed sooner than t can be occuped," DeMoss sad. Because so much of the equpment from the current cafetera wll be used n me new cafetera, the school must wat untl the summer to make de converson. Durng the Wednesday nght servce, 25 students wth mmedate famly members nvolved n Operaton Desert Storm came forward shortly after the announcement was made that the alled forces were at war. These students were ntroduced to one another n order to form a support group for each other. Many students have famly and frends nvolved n the war. Approxmately 70 percent of those n attendance at the Wednesday nght servce ndcated that they know someone overseas. DEMPSEY Campus News Edtor LU announced on Jan. 16 that Famly Net Inc., a satellte televson network owned by the Lberty Broadcastng Network and the "Old Tme Gospel Hour", has been sold to the Rado and Televson Commsson of the Southern Baptst Conventon (RTVC). The terms of the deal were not dsclosed, but Lberty spokesman Mark DeMoss sad the sale ncluded ar tme as well as cash. Thefnaldetals of the sale should be fnalzed wthn 30 days, DeMoss sad. Jack Johnson, presdent of the RVTC, sad the acquston of FamlyNet would allow hs network to reach an addtonal 700,000 homes and 70 televson statons. Some of FamlyNet's current programng, ncludng the "Old Tme Gospel Hour,", wll stll be carred on the network. The Rev. Jerry Falwell was pleased wth, thejransac- ton. "As a result of ths agreement, the outreach of the 'Old Tme Gospel Hour' wll be greatly enhanced, and the programmng on Famly Net wll be strengthened," Falwell sad. DeMoss sad the decson to sell Fam ly Net was the result of a lack of OTGH funds to expand the network. It's true. The Flames beat Eastern Mennonte Saturday nght n the Vnes Center, 70-63, to mprove ther record to On the same note, you've also probably heard certan pessmsts say that ths year's squad couldn't wn a pckup game aganst an ntramural team. But here's somethng that you probably have not heard: Ths year's team has more raw talent than any of the LU teams I've ever seen n myfveyears at Lberty. In a team domnated by underclassmen, Lberty could be a perennal power n year or two. Its true! Hear me out! If you've seen the Flames play ths year, you'd recognze that the players have shown a few flashes of brllance, but they have a lot of maturng to do. But the good news s that tme s somethng the Flames have on ther sde. There sn't even one senor on the team, and there's only one junor (Mke Coleman) who gets substantal playng tme. Of course you know about Coleman: the hardworkng 6-foot-7-nch center who s averagng 16 ponts per game (a 62 percent feld goal percentage) as well as 11 rebounds per game. Coleman's feld goal percentage and rebounds are good enough to rank hm second among all players on ndependent teams. But other than Coleman, who else do the Flames have that can shoot the lghts out? The obvous answer s Julus Nwosu, a 6-foot- 10-nch sophomore forward from Ngera. Nwosu s n hs nfancy'as far as learnng the game of basket ball. Already ths year, he has trpled the number of games that he has played not only durng hs career, but hs durng entre lfe. He has made great strdes ths year, and he's not afrad to dunk the ball n heavy traffc. Can any other past or present Flame boast ths? I'veeven heard one coach forecast hm as an NBA prospect f hs sklls contnue to develop. Nwosu, n less than a year of play, s averagng 11 ponts and sx rebounds a game. He's also quckly developng a turnaround jumper. Under the watchful eye of Coleman, Nwosu should develop the needed sklls to gve Lberty one of the most promsng tandems of bg men n all of Dvson 1-AA. So why aren't the Flames wnnng more games? The man reason s that they have a freshman-domnated backcourt. Matthew Hldebrand, Chrs Toomer, Jeff Bloom and Brett Anthony are the fearless freshman foursome. However, when compared to the average freshman player, all four have shown great ablty. Hldebrand s the man at the pont. He averages nearly eght ponts and sx asssts per game. He has decent ball-handlng sklls and can shoot the long jumper. Toomer s the shootng guard. Heonly averages sx ponts per game but makes up for t wth hs tenacous defense. He plays wth a lot of emoton and when he's on, he's hard to slop. Bloom s the one who s hard to descrbe. He doesn't excel n any partcular category, but he s sold n all facets of the game. He averages sx ponts, three rebounds and three asssts per game as well as a team-leadng 1.5 steals per game. Although he's lsted as a forward, he's not afrad to shoot the trey. Anthony s usually thefrstman off the bench. He too s not flashy, but nstead he's the most physcal of the freshman guards. The man problem for ths fearlessfreshmenfoursome s turnovers, whch s an aspect of the game that s conquered only by experence. Currently, the four contrbute to make up 48 percent of the team's turnovers. The Flames, 2-14, placed four men n doublefguresncludng freshman guards Matthew Hldebrand (19 ponts) and Chrs Toomer (12 ponts), sophomore forward J ul us Nwosu (11 ponts) and junor center Mke Coleman who had a sold 18-pont, 13- rebound performance. There was a new state-of-the-art, domed basketball arena. There was the ntroducton of a 6- foot-10-nch Ngeran center whom many had labeled the "franchse." There were eght new faces and a fresh "just-glad-to-be-here" atttude to accompany them. There were no unpleasant memores of the past two seasons. Sxteen games nto the season, however, t s evdent that one aspect of the programremansntact: losng. Saturday's narrow vctory over Dvson 3 Eastern Mennonte gave the Flames only ther second wn of the season wth both wns comng at home aganst Dvson 3 opponents. Tralng enterng the second half, George Mason wasted no tme n brdgng the sx-pont gap, as the Lady Patrots captalzed on four LU turnovers n the frst fve mnutes. Junor forward Theresa Bream (18 ponts, 12 rebounds) ht two free throws wth 15:45 remanng to pull LU to wthn Lberty connected on tsfrstfeld goal of the second half wth 13:48 left when freshman guard Sandy Schwasnck hta short jumper, cuttng the lead An assst from Schwasnck allowed Bream to score nsde, cuttng the lead to three at wth 12:41 left n the game. Out of the eght NCAA Dvson I teams that competed n last weekend's tournament, the Flamesfnshedsecond wd 70 cumulatve ponts, topped only by de host team of ODU wm 87. Fve of the Flames' wrestlers captured top postons wthn ther ndvdual weght classes, ncludng senor Crag Holday who swept hs 167-pound class by not allowng any ponts to be scored aganst hm durng de entre tournament. "We performed well as a team. Everyone wrestled up to hs seed or better" Holday sad. Rodney Fsher, a 158-pound senor, also captured afrst-placeposton by pnnng hs opponent n de last 53 seconds of de match. An outstandng performance was gven by freshman Aaron Bruce who placed second n the 177-pound class, losng only one match to an ODU wrestler by two ponts. Other top contenders for de Flames were as follows: sophomore Steve Dernlan who fnshed second n de 142-pound class, Derek Thoreson who fnshed thrd n the 118-pound class and Chrstan Holday who fnshed fourth n the 158-pound class. Mdway through the second half wth the Flames clngng to a narrow lead, referee Duke Edsall ejected Lberty's Danny Coupland from the arena floor. Who s Danny Coupland you mght ask? Coupland plays Lberty's obnoxous, fun-lovng eagle mascot durng all LU home games. The "Brd" as many people call Coupland, was ejected shortly after dsmemberng and body-slammng a stuffed fgure of a referee durng a pause n second-half acton. As soon as the mascot's ejecton was announced, the student secton heartly booed Edsall for several seconds whle passng the stuffed referee several rows up the student secton. Shortly after the ejecton, the Flames lost the lead and eventually the game leavng many to beleve that the "Brd's" ejecton sealed the fate odf Lberty. "I don't know why but for some reason, he (Edsall) got really offensve and took the whole thng personally," Coupland sad aftersaturday's Eastern Mennonte contest. "He's a good referee and well-respected everywhere, but he just lost t for a second." The young players are fnally startng to get comfortable wth the system, and they're beng able to read one another on the court," Coleman explaned. "We have a great bunch of guys wth a great atttude. The future looks really brght." In late December the team was dealt ts most crpplng loss off the court when sophomore startng guard BJ. Burton and senor reserve forward Zach Harrs were expelled from the team for volatng unversty polcy. The loss of Burton left Lberty wthout ts top offensve permeter player and best overall defensve player, but Meyer mantans that ncdent s not a reflecton on the team he has assembled. "It has always been our motvaton to develop the best possble basketball team on the court and to try and honor the Lord and represent Lberty n a postve manner," Meyer explaned. "It s my prmary responsblty to Lberty Unversty to work very hard at dscpleshp. Ths s not only a professon; t's also a mnstry. From day to day, we conduct devotons that wll hopefully teach the kds to make rght decsons n lfe. "The downsde of youth s that they tend to make bad decsons and poor judgment calls," Meyer sad. "The upsde of youth s that they are very reslent I'm proud of ths team n that none of them have hung ther heads. I hope as we mprove n the future that we wll not forget what t s lke to experence consecutve losses, and we learn to apprecate vctores." Whle most agree that there s nowhere to go but up for the LU basketball program, Meyer feels success wll come a lot sooner than many thnk. "I truly beleve that next season we wll not only be compettve, but we'll be a team that fnshes well over the.500 mark," Meyer predcted. "We ddn't have the productvty comng out of the locker room (after halftme)," Meyer sad. "If we had more experence, t could have been dfferent."
