CHESTER AND ISABELLE CORBRIDGE SESSIONS by Ada Sessions Eddins (Grand-daughter) My Grandfather, Chester was born on the 29th of May, 1859, in Bountiful, Utah. He was the first son and third child of Perrigrine and Emorette Loveland Sessions. He was raised in a family where polygamy was practiced; his father had eight wives and fifty-five children. He grew up in Bountiful going to church and what school was available. He worked with his father and brothers on their farm, orchards, molasses mill, and to get timber out for the sawmill. In those days there was never an end to work. He stood five-foot, eight-inches and weighted one hundred and seventy pounds. He had sandy hair, and as long as I can remember wore a heavy mustache. My grandmother, Isabelle Jane Corbridge was born on March 28th, 1862 in Bountiful. Her parents were Edward and Alice Parker Corbridge. She was raised in a family of nine children of which she was the youngest. Grandma was taught the art of cooking and home making at which she excelled. Her home was her castle, and she made every move count. She must have had very little schooling since I have documents that she signed with an "X". Chester and Isabelle were married the 2nd of October, 1879 in the Endowment House in Salt Lake City. She was seventeen, and he was twenty years old. They made their first home in Bountiful where he worked in his father's molasses mill. The first child Chester was born July 5th, Their second son, a curly haired boy, was born August 25th, He was my father. He was named Edward after his grandfather Corbridge. In 1884, when my father was two years old, Grandpa was called by the President of the Mormon Church to serve on a mission in St. Johns, Arizona. It was a long, hard trip and a lot of the way there were no roads and rugged mountains. The trip was made with horses and wagons. Grandpa was the youngest man in the group, but he was chosen as their captain. This was a great undertaking for a man twenty-five years old with a wife and two small children. The covered wagon bed was their home most of the time they were gone. Many bad places on the road had to be cleared or dug out, and then Grandma would have to drive the team while the men supported the wagons. The trip was slow and tedious. After they were on the way Grandma found she was going to have another baby.

At Lee's Ferry on the Colorado River, the water was high and they were forced to camp there for six weeks. It is hard to visualize this when you visit there now, because the water level is controlled by the Lake Powell Dam, but it is not hard to understand the desolate feeling they must have had. Grandma often talked about how her two little boys would cling to her apron and cry because they were hungry. All she had to give them to chew on were thin slices of salt pork. When they could finally cross on the ferry, she had to drive the wagon up the treacherous Lee's Backbone while the men supported the wagon with ropes and poles. She never forget that terrible climb up the steep, narrow dug-way as long as she lived. 2 In a shelter made with wagon covers wrapped around four posts, their daughter, Laura Bell was born on January 4th, They were among Indians, and Grandma was very frightened. The only assistance she had was by the women in the camp. Making little progress with the Indians their mission in Arizona lasted only a few months. They returned to Bountiful and moved into a home his father, Perrigrine, had built. After what she had been through the rock house was her pride and joy (There is a picture taken in June 1991 of the house in my book. The house is on the northeast corner of 200 North 200 East in Bountiful.) On August 13th, 1885, Laura Bell started with diarrhea and passed away at three o'clock the next morning. This was a terrible blow to them. They had suffered so much and had hardly got settled down again from the mission. Roy was born June 10th, 1886, Willie Ray on November 13th, 1888, and another girl, Alice May, arrived on May 6th, Despite the low wages, Grandpa went to work as a street car conductor in Salt Lake City. He moved his family there, and their son Russ Hinman was born February 15th, The cars were drawn by horses, and after the cars were converted to electricity there was little future for them in Salt Lake. Grandma's brothers, John and William Corbridge had settled in Star Valley, Wyoming. They were doing well and wanted them to move there. The boys needed a place to work, and so when the opportunity came in 1894 to sell their place, Grandpa loaded their belongings into two wagon and started for Star Valley; the older boys drove the livestock. Grandpa's sister, Lucina Waite's family lived in Woodruff, Utah, and they stopped there to rest. Grandpa purchased a hay ranch near Auburn from one of Grandma's brothers. Grandma often said the hardest part about leaving Utah was to leave their beautiful rock home. 2

The house they moved into was a two room log house which was much less than she had hoped for. Grandma said it looked more like a barn for horses, but they had eighty acres of good sub-irrigated wild hay land. They had to make do with what they had, and the first thing to do was to get grain and a garden planted. 3 The ranch was located near the west hills and Indians were frequent visitors. They were usually friendly but would stop and beg for food. Grandma was always frightened of them, and if she saw them coming, she would take her children and hide in the hay. Then the Indians would raid her garden. The snow would get so deep in winter it was hard to get through. Grandpa would drive a herd of horses on the road, and the boys would follow in the sleigh to get to school. As soon as they could they hauled logs from the canyon to get lumber to build a house in Auburn. It was two years before they moved into their new home. It was one of the few homes in the valley that had shingles on the roof. Grandma and Grandpa belonged to the Auburn Ward where William Corbridge was the Presiding Elder (He and his wife Olive gave my parents a glass cake stand for a wedding present in 19O4, and later my mother gave it to me). Delbert was born in Auburn on September 29th, Another son, Loal was born August 29th Loal suffered with a heart ailment and died on the 29th of July, Fanny Valora was born July 2nd, 1902, Hilda arrived on the 17th of January, 1905, and Ruby came on the 28th of September, 1907, making twelve children in all. While they were living in Auburn, they both held several Ward and Stake offices. Grandpa was a Counselor to Bishop Heman Hyde for four years; Grandma a Counselor to Amelia Hillyard in the Relief Society. When the Tabernacle was built in Afton Wm. Harrison was head mason, and Grandpa was supervisor of scaffold construction. Ten of their children were married in the Temples, and most of their weddings were planned for the fall, so they could bring home fruit for canning from Utah. Grandpa and Grandma sent three of their sons on missions: Chester to Texas, Edward to West Virginia, Willie Ray to the Dakotas. While Chester (Chet) was on his mission, his wife gave birth to their fifth child, Rinda. Chet's wife died on September 14th. She was wrapped and kept cold with fruit jars filled with cold water until Chet could get home from his mission. She was buried on the 30th of September, Chet's family moved in with Grandma and Grandpa. Grandma nursed the new born baby along with Ruby who was a year old. Fourteen people lived there until Chet married his sister- 3

in-law, Mame. 4 During the sheep problems over grazing rights in 1898, Grandpa was one of the men who helped stake off the range. The boundaries were carefully adhered to until the Forest Range Act was passed by Congress under President Theodore Roosevelt. This act regulated the grazing and timber lands of the United States. Grandpa bought more land in Auburn and Grover and stocked it with cattle and horses. About this time was my first recollections of them. We lived in Fairview which was about eight miles away, and it was always a big treat to go and visit them. I remember the spotless clean house with the twelve high back chairs around the table. At breakfast time, the chairs were turned away from the table and everyone kneeled down for family prayer (I was pleased when Ruby gave me one of these chairs). Grandma always prided herself that they never sat down to breakfast without hot bread or biscuits. Grandma's store room under the kitchen was white washed and spotless. She kept big pans of milk on the shelve; the pans were ricked with slats between them. After the milk set over night, she skimmed the cream off to make butter and then when the milk soured cottage cheese. Grandma used black handled silverware and insisted it was polished every morning. If she didn't have Bon Ami, she used ashes from the stove. Whenever I stayed there, it was mine and Ruby's job to polish the silverware. Grandpa let the girls have a playhouse in the top of the granary and that was super. Ruby, Hilda, and I with other friends spent many fun hours up there. We usually spent Christmas in Auburn, and I often wonder how Grandma managed. By this time, there were fivein-laws and ten or twelve grand children. Beds were made all over the place with kids tucked in at the foot of each bed. The big Christmas tree was in the parlor and no one went in there until Christmas day. About noon Grandpa would go in and make a fire in the big stove, and we knew it was getting time for Santa. Mother and Aunt May always dressed as Santa and passed out the presents. Of course there were only two or three presents, mostly homemade, for each one of us, just from our parents and Santa. No exchange of gifts like now. When dinner was served all the grown-ups sat at the table and every kid disappeared into the other room. When the adults finished each Mother looked out for her own family, and we had the big table to ourselves. Grandpa drove a good sorrel team of horses with a flax manes and tails and red tassels attached to the bridles. 4

They had a nice driving sleigh with fur-lap robes and foot warmers heated with bricks. The highlight of seeing Grandpa after a trip was the big horsehide overcoat he wore. He could always pull out a sack of peppermints for us. There is one thing about Grandma that I have to mention: until Grandma was a real old lady, no matter how many she had to a meal, she always washed the dishes. She claimed no one else could put their hands in the hot water she liked to use. 5 In August of 1919, Grandpa retired from his farm work and bought a home in Afton; their first running water and electric lights. They enjoyed this home very much, but Grandpa was not content to idle his life away, so he took a part time job at Henry Erickson's garage. He sold auto parts and gasoline. He enjoyed his leisure hours with the old cronies of the town sitting on a bench in front of Pat Yeaman's store. He would mosey home for dinner arriving promptly at 12 o'clock knowing there would always be a pie or a pudding ready for dinner. Grandpa served two years as a city councilman and then he was elected Mayor of Afton 7 July, 1924, a position he held at the time of his death. In September 1924, Grandpa and Grandma started for Utah with some of their relatives who had been visiting. By the time they reached Paris, Idaho, Grandpa was violently ill. They went back to Montpelier where he was operated on for prostate gland trouble. He died in the hospital on the 14th of September, By his request, he was taken to Bountiful, Utah to be buried. His death was a great blow to Grandma. Valora and Hilda had married that summer, and she and Ruby were left alone. The summer after Grandpa died, Grandma had a major operation. She developed milk leg (a blood clot) and was bedfast most of the summer. That winter her daughter Hilda developed pneumonia and died ten days after giving birth to a daughter on the 17th of December, Despite being sixty years old, Grandma raised the baby (Hilda Titensor). In the fall of 1928 her daughter May had a sinus operation. She developed an infection and died September 23rd leaving her husband and eleven children, ranging in age from two and one-half months to fourteen years. This was a very sad occasion, and Grandma had another family of small children to help care for. A few years later she developed cataracts on both her eyes. She was totally blind for nearly two years, before an operation restored the sight in one eye. Her health was starting to fail and she fell and broke her shoulder but she fully recovered from this. A short time later she broke some ribs and her pelvis bone. When she 5

could finally get around again, she fell and broke her wrist 6 Valora had lost her husband and lived with Grandma at this time but in September of 1950, Valora bought a home in Ogden. Grandma sold her home in Afton and planned to live with Valora. While she was getting moved, Grandma stayed with my parents in Ogden, and while there she become bedfast. She passed away on October 5th, 1950 at the age of eighty-eight. MAYOR OF AFTON, WYOMING BURIED AT BOUNTIFUL, UTAH Chester Sessions, Mayor of Afton, Wyoming, son of Perrigrine and Emorette Loveland Sessions, first settlers and founders of Bountiful was called by death at Montpelier, Idaho, early Sunday morning, following an operation on the Thursday previous. Mr Sessions, accompanied by his wife and her sister, Mrs. Alice Wood of Syracuse were on their way to Bountiful, when he was obliged to go to the hospital at Montpelier where the operation was necessarily immediately performed. The attending surgeons discovered that the nature of the ailment was very serious and announced no hope could be held for his recovery. The suffer fought against these overwhelming odds bravely until Sunday when relieved by death. He retained consciousness until the end and was able to converse with members of the family who continuously attended his bedside. He died with a smile. His brothers Orson and Wallace 0. and Orson's daughter, Ida, were notified of the seriousness of Mr. Sessions condition Sunday, and rushed to Montpelier; but arrived several hours after he had expired. The body was brought to Bountiful, in conformity with Mr. Sessions request that he be buried beside his parents in the Bountiful Cemetery. His wife and children arrived here Tuesday afternoon. The remains lay in state at the home of Wallace 0. Sessions until the hour of the funeral. Chester Sessions was born in Bountiful, and was sixty five years of age on the 28th of last May. He spent the early part of his life in Bountiful, and on October 2nd, 1876 was married to Isabelle Corbridge, in the Salt Lake Temple. Eight years after the marriage, they were called to St. John, Arizona, where they stayed two years, subsequently moving back to Bountiful which was home to these sturdy settlers until thirty years ago when the call of the frontier lured them to Star Valley, where they have since resided. Mr. Sessions was prominent and continually active in both religious and civic capacity at Afton, and held 6

several ward and stake offices, for four years being Bishop's counselor to Bishop Hyde in the Auburn Ward, and serving two years as city councilman in Afton, and being Mayor of that city at the present time. Mr. Sessions is the father of twelve children, nine of whom survive him. The surviving children are Edward and Ruby Sessions, Afton, Wyoming; Roy Sessions and Hilda Anderson, Tremonton, Utah; William Sessions, Mrs. May Roos and Delbert Sessions, all of Auburn, Russ Sessions, Bedford Wyoming, and Mrs. Valora Taggart, Salt Lake City. His oldest son Chester and two infants preceded him in death. Thirty eight brothers and sisters, thirty nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were held in the Bountiful Tabernacle this afternoon at 2 o'clock, under the direction of Counselor David R. Tolman of the Bountiful First Ward. The funeral was very largely attended and beautiful floral offerings were profuse. Remarkable, all of the children of the deceased and thirty-five of the thirty-six living brothers and sisters, even the oldest brother, Carlos 83 years of age were at the services. Opening prayer was offered by David 0. Willey, Bishop E.Burns, Counselor David R. Tolman, John R. Waite, Jed Stringham, Joseph T. Mabey, Amos Cook,, Harvey Sessions, and Thomas Waddoups paid tribute to the sterling qualities of the deceased and the Sessions family in brief remarks. Brother Tolman read the tribute of the Auburn Ward Bishop, Daniel T. Wood. A mixed quartet composed of Sisters Emma Garret and Rose Malcolm and Brothers Orville Thomas and John R. Call accompanied by Ida Thomas. Mrs. Emma Garret favored with a vocal solo, "Sometime, Somewhere," Brother and Sister Orval Thomas sang a duet "Beyond Today". Elder Henry W. Stahle closed the services with prayer. Interment took place in the Bountiful Cemetery, where the parents and little daughter of Mr. Sessions. 7 Obituary of Isabelle Jane Corbridge Sessions Early Pioneer passed away last Friday. A long and noble life, faithful to its close was terminated at 4:45, October 5th when Isabelle Corbridge Sessions answered the final summons to which we all must yield though few will have had the rich and varied experience this faithful woman has had. She was the wife of the late Chester Sessions, who preceded her in death in She was born March 28, 1862 in Bountiful, Utah and was the daughter of Edward and Alice Parker Corbridge. She was married in the Endowment House in Salt Lake City, Utah 7

in With her husband she endured the rigors of pioneer life, accepting a mission call to colonize in St. Johns, Arizona, among the Indians and Mexicans. The trip was made in wagons and vivid memories of the ordeal endured, remained with her throughout her life. A few years after their return from the mission they moved to Star Valley. They settled on the west side of the upper valley. They lived on their ranch a few years and then built a home at Auburn. Here they lived until 1920 when they moved to Afton which has since been her home. In addition to her own large family of 12, she helped rear several orphaned grandchildren and leaves a posterity of 193 persons including 7 children, 52 grandchildren, 109 great-grandchildren and 25 great-great grandchildren. All her life she served these with whom she came in contact in whatever capacity the emergencies of the moment called for, cheerfully sacrificing her own comfort so that those about her might be happy. She served as an executive for many years in the Auburn Ward Relief Society, blending beautifully the care of home with community. She died at Ogden, Utah where she and her daughter, Mrs Valora Taggart, who has cared for her mother during the declining years of her life, had moved just a week previous. The funeral was held at Bountiful Monday October, 9 at 1:30 p.m. with Patriarch James E. Burns, a life long friend of the family conducting. Invocation was offered by a nephew, Galvin Corbridge. Song "Face to Face" by a Granddaughter Mrs. Chester Sessions. Speaker, Heber D. Clark. Song, -"Goin' Home" by a grandson, LaDell Sessions. Speaker, Ona A. Harrison. Song- "That Wonderful Mother Of Mine", by a cousin, Joseph Wood. Speaker, Patriarch James E. Burns. Closing Prayer by Earl Sessions. The Grave was dedicated by a nephew, Alvin Wood. She was laid to rest beside her husband and two children in the Bountiful Cemetery. She leaves to mourn her loss the following children: Edward Sessions, Roy Sessions, Delbert Sessions and Valora Taggart all of Ogden, Russ Sessions, Salt Lake City, Will Sessions, Auburn and Ruby Kennington. 8 8
